Hi. This is a thread discussing the use/issues of the iView (ABC Australia) downloaders.
There is currently a Wiki that was put up by Yansky here:
http://iviewdownloaders.wikia.com/wiki/ABC_iView_Downloaders_Wiki
The various URL links to obtain the downloaders are on that Wiki. If any are pointing to dead links, please let us know here ;)
If there any issues with the downloaders, please let us know here as well... The maintainers of the downloaders will likely be monitoring this thread and will offer help where/when ever they can...

Replay Video Capture (http://applian.com/replay-video-capture/) will work great for this. ABC will probably continue to change protocols to foil the stream rippers, but since Replay Video Capture is a screen recorder it can't be blocked.

Anywho, I'm trying to add resume functionality to the firefox extension but I'm having some trouble. I decided to double-check with your batch script to just make sure that resuming is actually working cause your script has always worked for that, but it doesn't seem to be working atm.
Here's the output from the batch script:
http://pastebin.com/j8ZarR62
Downloading normally works fine though. It's just the resume that's borking for some reason.
Yeah, I've noticed that resume doesn't work anymore, well I haven't been able to get it to work for the last couple of releases.

Yeah. Sometimes it happens for no reason. I can't pin it down to what is causing it, but so far I think it borks if the server disconnects you - like it leaves corruption in the file. When you go to resume it, then RTMPdump chucks a wobbly because of the corruption (then you'll need to delete the file and start again  )
However, it seems that if you interrupt it (e.g: Ctrl-C) then RTMPdump exits cleanly and you can resume (I think that's how it went - um, er, last I remember).
Is that what you're getting? I've also tried this with RTMPdump 2.2c - same thing :(

I changed back to using:

Pity the war has resumed, anyway one change I've found is that ABC has changed the handshake url from
http://www2b.abc.net.au/iView/Services/iViewHandshaker.asmx/isp
to
http://www2b.abc.net.au/iViewHandshaker/services/iviewhandshaker.asmx/isp
also they seem to be transitioning to an api2

No problem Anywho, it's been quite a while since I could be of any use.
forgot to mention (we'll actually login timed out, lost unposted quick reply) but I have also edited the wiki to reflect that part 2 of the whirlpool forum thread had also been deleted (and I'm guessing part one is being reviewed, since it started with rtmpdump probably be deleted soon as well)
will wait with bated breath for a working downloader (tried doing it myself with the info, but either not enough or I buggered up some where)

Yep. Just saw that - thank you. I think Part-1 might be safe. I don't seem to recall needing to use RTMPdump (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/rtmpdump-freeware-console-RTMP-downloading-application.htm) before Part-2. I think it was just FLVstreamer at that time.

I only had to change the two references in the batch file to the new one and it worked for me.
Anyway, the link to the edited batch file is in the Wiki already. Should only need to D/L the minimum version if you have the binary bits.

Did it take a while to download?
Did you have something else using the 'net at the time?
The 10054 suggests that the server disconnected you.
Might have been ABC glitching again
Out of interest, does it, or can you, resume the download if you try again? If it doesn't, can you post the message RTMPdump gives? (I'm trying to figure out why some D/L's don't resume where others do.)

Well I was running two DL's simultanously, which i have in the past had up to 4 running together..I have a modified version of the bat script which worked fine prior to last week ...
I write the rtmpdump command to a NNN.bat file , sync then spawn a separate cmd window for each of the files ...
There seems to be a narrower time window now for the life of the token, if you delay the start then it seems token has expired, perhaps it has the same mechanism mid download to revalidate the token ...
Happened right at the end of DL at arround 98% to 99% , just gives an untidy end ...

However, iView has been flakey as of late - so keep that in mind when using multiple connections.
There seems to be a narrower time window now for the life of the token, if you delay the start then it seems token has expired, perhaps it has the same mechanism mid download to revalidate the token ...
The Windows batch file version always gets an updated token just before downloading. In fact, that is the delay you see between selecting Option#3 and before RTMPdump kicks in. And yes - you have about 10 minutes before the authentication token becomes invalid.
Happened right at the end of DL at around 98% to 99% , just gives an untidy end ...
See what happens if you use an earlier version of RTMPdump (2.2b or earlier).
-----
Please remember everyone, iView is so flakey at the moment (been like it for weeks actually) that I am more or less disregarding most issues.
I mean, I've had issues where the batch file hangs at trying to get the info for your server. I kill it, try again, and then it goes through - only to bork at getting the index. Or else the console dies because ABC spat back some garbage to the JSON parser.
The best bet is to wait (if possible) until they sort out their (stupidity) err, issues. Other than that, you'll have to suck it up for a while.

This afternoon, all seems to be well, with downloads starting immediately and unmetered via Hostworks.
Great work in restoring the thread and facility, fellas!

Is it pure coincidence that ABC experienced issues/changed things simultaneously with Whirlpool deleting the iview thread, or has something more sinister been happening behind the scenes?

Yes it is terrific to see a bunch of Aussies making something happen on the fringe ..freedom of speech ..freedom of access to educational materials & media ..the information revolution is just like the industrial revolution of a few hundred years ago
As for the arguement that it disadvantages creativity, which is what Whirlpool through up as an excuse for their decision, I would suggest that the freedom of access to media & materials stimulates creativity
Is it pure coincidence that ABC experienced issues/changed things simultaneously with Whirlpool deleting the iview thread, or has something more sinister been happening behind the scenes?
Sort of coincidence that might occur by virtue of induced delays caused by AFP rerouting IP traffic through a national filter perhaps ..After all ABC is effectively a federal government controlled entity
Yes it is terrific to see a bunch of Aussies making something happen on the fringe ..freedom of speech ..freedom of access to educational materials ..but I'm spooked easily because i live in the bit that has the 3rd largest police force in the world & they are always trying to justify their existence to their political masters ..
Its important that we at all times remain within the legal constraints of what is possible, Im sure non of us are or have any intention to violate any laws of copywrite etc ...(sorry for the rant)
..I would also like to bring to your attention to the opensource truecrypt product http://www.truecrypt.org/ just ensure that anything you DL is strictly for your personnel use & not for any other reason :-)
..as it is my opinion that what we do is in no way different to anyone who has a VCR or PVR other recording box

Back in the old whirlpool thread there was a message about trimming the file by cutting of 12K off the end or something. What program did people do this with?
I too am finding that rtmpdump version 2.2b can continue a download that it self aborted, but the newer versions stuff up the timecoding. But if I cancel it, it has a good chance of not continuing.

Sounds like there might be an issue that has crept in between rtmpdump2.2b(r426) and 2.2d(r474). I think that's when we changed from using OpenSSL to PolarSSL*

I would suggest adding the code from the Windows Batch File Downloader that gets the authentication token. echo this to your generated batch script at a point before rtmpdump gets called.
bin\wget %WGET_OPT% -O cache\auth.xml http://www2b.abc.net.au/iViewHandshaker/services/iviewhandshaker.asmx/isp
rem === reformatting auth.xml to remove namespace which hinders xml.exe to parse the elements we need
echo ^<iview^>>cache\auth_temp.xml
for /f "skip=2 tokens=*" %%a in ('type cache\auth.xml') do echo %%a>>cache\auth_temp.xml
move /y "cache\auth_temp.xml" "cache\auth.xml" >nul
rem === end reformat
if /i "%HOST%" == "Akamai" (
for /f "usebackq tokens=*" %%a in (`bin\xml sel -T -t -m "/iview" -v token "cache\auth.xml"`) do set TOKEN=%%a
) else (
for /f "usebackq" %%a in (`bin\xml sel -T -t -m "/iview" -v token "cache\auth.xml"`) do set TOKEN=%%a
)
del cache\auth.xml
This would then allow you to execute the batch file generated at a later time because then the authentication token is generated just before calling rtmpdump (just like in the Windows Batch-File Downloader) ;)
frhed (http://frhed.sourceforge.net/) (a hex-editor) is an easy program to use for binary file editing.

An excellent idea Anywho, i can save it in a seperate file then cat it instream. I will of course stick something in place to serialise or make unique the cache\auth.xml file so that it doesnt get confused. ;)
Hi everyone,
Great work on the batch file.

I have found that I need to delete the contents of the cache directory before starting the batch file. The old show lists don't seem to get cleaned up properly between batch file runs.
Does this fix the problem for you, too?
Hi,
Thanks for quick response.
Deleted the cache folder contents - no change. Only point is RTMP connect gets 10060 no socket errors a couple of times, path is still not found.
using: RTMPDump v2.2d (r474)
On my work PCs JSON parser keeps crashing too.
I have tried ivewnapper and iviewnapperlite - they trigger the RTMP download, then just exit with no progress.
I have come recently to iview - specifically for the recent Four Corners episodes - so i've never actually had any of these downloaders working.

Hi,
Thanks for quick response.
Deleted the cache folder contents - no change. Only point is RTMP connect gets 10060 no socket errors a couple of times, path is still not found.
Is port 1935 unblocked on your modem? Sometimes a slow or flakey connection will do this too.
using: RTMPDump v2.2d (r474)
On my work PCs JSON parser keeps crashing too.
I have tried ivewnapper and iviewnapperlite - they trigger the RTMP download, then just exit with no progress.
This usually happens at workplaces. Usually they block all ports except those for http or mail or else deny access to certain websites or secondary sites that those websites may use.
RTMPdump needs port 1935 to be accessible (unblocked) and needs access to Hostworks or Akamai servers as well (depends on your ISP).
If the JSON parser is dying, then it isn't getting fed anything usable... This smells like your workplace has blocked full access to the ABC iView site. This might also be a permissions problem with the executable files that the downloader(s) will need. Try it in an admin account and see if it works then.
I have come recently to iview - specifically for the recent Four Corners episodes - so i've never actually had any of these downloaders working.
Perhaps i've missed something really obvious? :o
Sounds like modem/firewall/access issues ;)
Also, one tiny point the description in the batch file still says 15.69 - in the file from http://www.4shared.com/file/750EOTqx/iView_Downloader_v1570.html
Oops :o Fixed now - thanks! ;)
Hi guys, appreciate all the fine work you do.
Just wanted to let you know the iViewFox plug-in seems to be a bit broken (still) on the Mac platform.
The terminal output looks like this:
/Users/ret/Library/Application\ Support/Firefox/Profiles/
iaqewbwz.default/extensions/iViewFox@forboden.com/rtmpdump
/b.command ; exit;
OK-Computer:~ ret$ /Users/ret/Library/Application\ Support/
Firefox/Profiles/iaqewbwz.default/extensions/iViewFox@
forboden.com/rtmpdump/b.command ; exit;
/Users/ret/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles
/iaqewbwz.default/extensions/iViewFox@forboden.com
/rtmpdump/b.command: line 2: -o: command not found
logout
[Process completed]
A quick look at the insides of b.command, and the problem seems to be quotation-itis, with the ampersand in the URL getting interpreted by the shell:
#!/bin/bash
"/Users/ret/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles
/iaqewbwz.default/extensions/iViewFox@forboden.com/rtmpdump
/rtmpdump-OSX-Intel" -e "-r"
rtmp://cp53909.edgefcs.net////flash/playback/_definst_/thewire_10_04_11_fix.mp4
"-a" ondemand?auth=daEa5dsdhdhaobydpdDajbqa2bYaKbhdlbU-bmrxcR-8-qnt_yHynJ&aifp=v001
"-o" /Users/ret/Downloads/thewire_10_04_11_fix.mp4 "-W"
http://www.abc.net.au/iview/images/iview.jpg
I suspect the "ondemand?auth..." argument should be in single quotes to avoid interpolation, but obviously monkey-patching that b.command file and executing it independently does not work.
Sorry if there's a more appropriate place I should be reporting this bug...
cheers

I posted this to the rtmp mailing list, but I thought I'd post it here too in case someone could help:
The ABC iView site ( http://www.abc.net.au/iview/ ) just added a 24 hour news streaming video. This is different to it's other videos on the site as it never stops streaming (obviously). I'm having some problems figuring out how to find the right perameters to download some of the stream. Here is a copy of the command line output:
http://pastebin.com/yXPG3fXt
I also tried to use rtmpsuck, but I'm not sure if I have it working properly. Here is the output from rtmpsuck:
http://pastebin.com/qg4KDbBR
I'm unsure how to proceed. Any ideas?
Cheers,
Yansky.

Can't help, but is the constant streaming actually in operation? I know it's not in "freezone" / unmetered yet.

I would have thought it was automatically in the freezone. Do you see it available in the top-left of the iview site?

Hi,
After finally discovering the rtmpdump syntax for ABC News 24 (http://lists.mplayerhq.hu/pipermail/rtmpdump/2010-July/001087.html) I went trying something not explict, like news24-lo.
To my surprise not only did it work, (replace news24-hi@28773 with news24-lo@28771), but the first three seconds showed a video frame from ABC3. Is this possibly a suggestion that there are other channels (like ABC3) already streaming on the akami service, or do you think that this was just a fluke and a left over frame from the last time the stream was watched (which would have been by some people testing it who may have simply just run the abc3 feed as news24 didn't exist yet)?
I really don't care much for this new news channel, but the idea of live streaming ABC1 2 and/or 3 is really interesting and I really hope that if it's not possible yet, they do so soon.

Hi guys.
So, the live stream doesn't require an authentication token, for those not aware. It detects your location, and so only Australians can view the stream.
Here are my figures:
High - 640x360 - 300-315MB / hour - news24-high@28773
Med - 512x288 - 200-210MB / hour - news24-med@28772
Low - 400x224 - 116-122MB / hour - news24-lo@28771

It looks like the Akamai server path has changed recently... at least, for Monday's Four Corners episode. Not certain it's changed for everything, but sharing what I've found anyway in case it helps.
Basically, I had to change the download command from:
rtmpdump -r rtmp://cp53909.edgefcs.net////flash/playback/_definst_/$SHOWPATH.mp4 -t rtmp://cp53909.edgefcs.net/ondemand?auth=$TOKEN -o $FILENAME $SWFPARAMS
To:
rtmpdump -r rtmp://cp53909.edgefcs.net/ondemand?auth=$TOKEN -y mp4:flash/playback/_definst_/$SHOWPATH -o $FILENAME $SWFPARAMS
(where $TOKEN is the auth token, $SHOWPATH is section/show, $FILENAME is the destination, and $SWFPARAMS is the SWF's length and hash (which hasn't changed))
Also, the auth token has to be downloaded from http://tviview.abc.net.au/iview/auth/?v2 instead of http://www2b.abc.net.au/iView/Services/iViewHandshaker.asmx/isp (which no longer exists)

That URL if ever "official" is no longer the right one, even though it still works.
http://tviview.abc.net.au/iview/auth/?v2 is the one the official iView .swf uses. It comes from http://www.abc.net.au/iview/xml/config.xml?v=370

Hmm.. Looks like my posts need to be approved by a moderator? Not used to that :)
Edit: That's weird. This post appears immediately without moderation. The one where I replied said to wait for moderation.
So, risking a double-post here, I said that if you look at http://www.abc.net.au/iview/xml/config.xml?v=370, you will see that the token comes from http://tviview.abc.net.au/iview/auth/?v2, and not any "handshaker" link anymore, even though that still works.
Edit2: There's also different links for getting the series index and show paths, but the old URLs still work. The latest Amiga version uses all the new links. The database format is also slightly different with the new URLs.

Yeah. The new "v2 api" stuff was mentioned by blood.eaglz back on page 2 (http://stream-recorder.com/forum/showpost.php?p=20196&postcount=12) of this thread ;)
I stayed with the "old" stuff because ABC seem to use it as a backup (perhaps) until ABC are confident of their "v2" bits and remain committed to "v2"
No biggie

Ahh, I transitioned to v2, because you never know when they're gonna disable the old mechanism. I guess they're always updating though, so..

From what I've gathered they are currently on one weird set up, they are using the new v2 url for getting the actual token, but as it lacks formatting they seem to be using the handshaker via another url http://www.abc.net.au/iView/Services/iViewHandshaker for display puposes (such as the bandwidth checker) rather than trying to parse the v2 string. I could be wrong but that's what I got from a url snoop :)

After doing some investigation, it appears the version of RTMPdump included with the iView downloader script is only 1.6 not 2.x (with the required verification features) so the downloading issues I am experiencing are caused by this version of RTMPdump after all. that means that the method described below will not work. :(
I can't seem to find any binaries of RTMPdump v2.x for OSX 10.5 and it looks like people are having trouble compiling it under 10.5 for various reasons, but due mostly to dependencies on other libraries/packages. It looks like it might not be possible under 10.5 without some serious tinkering...
--/edit--
Hey mycle, i have the same problem and found a little workaround (if you don't mind a little fiddling) to get iViewFox working on OSX 10.5
The ABC iView downloader script for OSX over at source forge has a version of RTMPdump that works with 10.5. If you do a quick google for "sourceforge ABC iView downloader OSX" you should find it.
Download and unpack it. Copy the rtmpdump_universal file in the package over to the iViewFox rtmpdump directory as described in the error message. In your case this appears to be:
/Users/mycle/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles/113g9ho0.default/extensions/iViewFox@forboden.com/rtmpdump/
For other people the directory will be slightly different, but you should be able to figure it out.
Then all you have to do is backup the old file by renaming rtmpdump-OSX-Intel to rtmpdump-OSX-Intel.old and replace it with the new one by by renaming rtmpdump_universal to rtmpdump-OSX-Intel
If you are running on a PPC (not intel) swap rtmpdump-OSX-Intel for rtmpdump-OSX-PPC in the above step.
Bingo bango.
This gets me past the immediate [process completed] window and starts the download. Hopefully it will also work for you.
At this point i am getting a few failed downloads where RMTPdump drops out before reaching the end of the download, but I suspect that this is due to some other network issues I'm having at the moment and not RMTPdump itself. This exact build of RMTPdump was working with the downloader script last week until the invalid token errors started. sigh...
Let me know what sort of mileage you get....

Hi guys,
Finally made an account. Just been lurking here since the WP thread was closed.
Anywho,
I made a json_parser that can be use to parse the series and episode JSON files and is not dependent with VS libraries.
It's output is the same but with the special characters cleaned already in order to minimize the cleaning in the batch file itself. Just execute the file to see the parameters needed.
Also, the output of the series has an extra field that denotes the available episodes for that series.
File can be downloaded here (http://www.box.net/shared/ie6grb1q7t).
Cheers,

maybe the changes at iView are good for something after all.
TBH, I haven't done a lot of d/ling and when I have there hasn't been a need to resume.
It would make sense if ABC fixed it on their end because I don't think the Adobe client would "recover" either if they don't feed the correct parameters back to it. I seem to remember them having issues with streaming just stopping and not continuing.
So maybe they've fixed it - dunno. Their streaming is so flakey that they should be paying the public to watch it!

Resume sucks for both iViewNapper_20100715 and iView_Downloader_v15.70 on Akmai. At home sitting on iPrimus get iView unmetered via Hostworks and have no problem with resume (or m.b. downloading simply wouldnot break), but at work having much faster speeds it is metered and Akmai only and download breaks and then resumes with filesize still growing but percentage starting from zero for new eventuating with
".... Stream does not start with requested frame, ignoring data ...." and ending with ".... Download may be incomplete (downloaded about 1.20%), try resuming Error in connection. Retrying... Press any key to continue . . . ...." and ".... Stream does not start with requested FLV frame, ignoring data... ....". using rtmpdump-win32-2.2d.
Hopefully makes sense and m.b. them fixing or you here contributing

Thank you, elfst0ne. Any chance of getting the source code? I feel uncomfortable not having the source code to modify - in case I/we "urgently" need to.
Yep! You can get it from here (http://www.box.net/shared/2v63tobcxc).
Please copy the license.txt if you're going to distribute the source codes as this is a requirement by the Boost library (uses 1.42) and JSON Spirit. I've added one for the parser as well for indemnification. Also, I used CMake and MinGW for building.

It does make sense to some degree. I wonder if the Hostworks/Akamai hosts might be using different Adobe FLV Stream Servers (or at least one is better up-to-date).
We need to do some more testing with "resume" to see what breaks on what, and under what conditions.
E.g: Hostworks, CTRL-C to stop a download almost always prevents me doing a resume and will end up with having to delete the file and starting again. Another would be if the Hostworks server stops - a resume gives me a weird number for a file position and it then says something about an invalid file position and cannot resume.
The above paragraph is not good enough... We will need to have the actual error messages in case hyc notices something that might need correcting in RTMPdump.
It is kind of weird though that "resume" is failing where it once worked infallibly before
If you've found a bug in rtmpdump (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/rtmpdump-freeware-console-RTMP-downloading-application.htm), posting it on the rtmpdump mailing list is the way to make sure it gets attention.
Fwiw, it looks to me like rtmpdump's resume is actually working fine, it's just printing the wrong percentage for its statistics.
E.g., let's say you got 80% of a file and then had to resume. It should say that it's resuming at 80% but it will say it's resuming at 0% instead. It will get to the end and report that only 20% was downloaded, because it's not taking the previous 80% into account in the stats. But actually the file is complete...

Here's the one I mentioned about stopping a download with "CTRL-C" and then resuming the file. What I did to get this result was to begin a download and stop it with "CTRL-C" at about 2%. Then I went back and tried to resume the same file download... What you see below is the result:

Resume sucks for both iViewNapper_20100715 and iView_Downloader_v15.70 on Akmai.
found a solution for my concern above:
rtmpdump-win32-2.2b instead of rtmpdump-win32-2.2d
makes resume continuing with the filesize and the percentage.
Actually I did notice this kind of hick-ups with resume after moving from iView_Downloader_v15.68 which was the last one using rtmpdump-win32-2.2b.
And even iViewNapper_20100715 resumes properly (filesize and percentage) when faking
rtmpdump-win32-2.2b as rtmpdump-win32-2.2d by simply renaming
b into d (the DOS window title says rtmpdump-win32-2.2d.exe whether the script itself indicates RTMPDump v2.2b (r426))

As the author of the Nappers, when I release a new version I do testing and the testing for the 2.2d version stopped resume from working, where as noted above the 2.2b version it just worked.
So do the rename above if it is better for you, but as for why resume in 2.2b worked and in 2.2d it doesn't, I don't know why.

 You're being obtuse, and/or you mis-understand what I mean by SAAS. Of course I appreciate the work done by this community and the individuals.
Of course iView isn't set up that way; it's meant to be interactive - which means that 'Napper' (or whatever) has little hope of working in anything other than a human-driven mode.
Even the batch file driven method can't cope with the changes to iView, or even the routine occasions when they add or change the controlling xml and json files.

Yes, ABC iView is Region Blocked (aren't they all ). Currently, the only way downloading can be achieved outside of Australia (that we know of) is with an Australian proxy server or VPN that is based in Australia. :(

Hmmm, interesting. Nice find!
It might work with your iView FF addon, but I'm not too sure about batch or 'napper...
Batch uses 'wget' - I don't think we can get fine enough control on the header.
'Napper uses its own method - I'm not sure how fine you can get the control on the header for that either... mce would have to let us know I guess. :D
I'm pretty sure the only reliable way is to call your own authentication link and parse the data from that.
That is, to call on a server based in AUS that then fetches the auth XML and passes it directly back to the OS client.
I believe that once a valid token is obtained, then it is useful after that and no further checking is done. (Don't know for sure as I have never tested it)

I couldn't get the "Lifehacker" method to work for Hulu. Still sees me as outside USA.
Thinking about it some more, how could it work? Comms between my ISP and the Hulu server would still show the originating source IP address (me in Aus.). How else would I be able to communicate with Hulu anyway?
Doing a check with this webpage (http://djce.org.uk/dumprequest) confirms it. Note that the source IP is still your current IP address even if you spoof the "X-Forward-For" address. So all a streaming server has to do is look at the source IP and make the decision - I'm pretty sure this is how ABC does it (and how it calculates the authentication token).

Yep. Looks like they rotate quickly with the ABC National News...
As an example, I just went to the iView website and tried to view the ABC National News for Saturday. It was 8pm here and the Program Info showed that it was uploaded 21 hours ago and only had an hour left before it expired. I went to watch it and I got the "Program is unavailable" message. My observation is that it's an undiscplined, hit-and-miss operation. I'm sure they have plenty of resources for storage, etc - but the code maintenance is shoddy.
The illegal character for "The Link" is a question mark in the file name.
Honestly, who puts question marks in file names... ABC have no idea.

You're confusing two separate things:
1. The Flash-based player does a geocheck before it starts playback (using http://www.abc.net.au/tv/geo/iview/geotest.xml)
2. The Flash Media Server does a completely separate geocheck when the RTMP connection is being established. If it fails then the stream is terminated with an error (code = NetConnection.Connect.Rejected, description = AccessManager.Reject: Access denied!)
The X-Forward-For header appears to be honoured by www.abc.net.au (running AkamaiGHost) but not cp53909.edgefcs.net (running Flash Media Server). So when you did the "Lifehacker method", the geocheck failed at step 1 and you saw the "overseas copyright" error. If you had somehow managed to continue past then point then you still would have been able to establish the RTMP connection because the geocheck would have succeeded at step 2.
The downloader programs skip step 1 completely and only do step 2 (after doing a separate HTTP request to retrieve the token). There is no geocheck on the token request nor is there a check that the token request and RTMP request originate from the same IP. This did not used to be the case - originally the geocheck was done during the token request and there was no check done by the Flash Media Server so therefore it was possible to use the X-Forward-For approach.
Therefore, as you said above, the only way to access iView programs from overseas is to use an Australian proxy or VPN. As far as I am concerned, their explanation of "copyright reasons" is absolute bollocks for the shows that the ABC actually creates themselves (I understand that there are special problems created by things such as news programs, where they are reproducing footage supplied to them by other agencies, but how can this apply to the 7:30 Report, Lateline, Australian Story, etc?).

Now it makes sense. Cheers mate! :)

I'm a relative newbie. Apologies if there's a better place for this to be posted.
I'm having trouble lately with iviewnapper and iviewfox maxing out my bandwidth to the point where my home network hangs and almost everything (except the rtmpdump request) times out. Is it possible to put a speed limiter into the GUIs? As far as I understand it, rtmpdump has it as an option.
I am intending to research how to use rtmpdump from the command line myself (haven't taken the time yet), but it would be a great addition for the future.
(Also, any tips on why it is maxing out my bandwidth so badly?)
By the way, thank you so much for the work you guys do.
Hi tabaxter,
You can experiment with adding your own command line options for the inbuilt bandwidth monitoring in RTMPDUMP by using and editing iViewNapperLite.
If you have troubles or you succeed, post back here with what you did and we'll see what we can do.

Off-topic, but an interesting report on ABC's video storage requirements:
http://www.computerworld.com.au/article/print/358775/abc_video_demands_causing_storage_havoc/
ABC's video demands causing storage havoc
National broadcaster goes from 3TB in 2003 to 1600TB in 2010
3Tb - right now, that is not much storage at all, from my perspective.

Is it legal to record video streams? Can it be considered as a piracy?

The terms of service for iView are different for the rest of the site though. Specifically: http://www.abc.net.au/tv/iview/faq.htm
ABC pays the owners of our content extra licensing fees to allow for it to be shown for at least 14 days online via iView. Streaming rights with the ABC are limited by a number of legal or business agreements that differ from program to program. A program must expire for many reasons, including music rights management, impending DVD sales and syndication deals. ABC is keen to support those content makers and therefore does not license content to be downloaded onto individual devices. Use of third party applications that allow downloadable versions of ABC iView programs is therefore unauthorised and not supported in any way.
Although you/I/we are not doing anything illegal, we are breaking the terms of service of the abc iview site.

No. Sharing or re-distribution is a definite no-no and we won't talk about that here in this thread.

I guess the equivalent would be breaking 4C. of YouTube's TOS (http://www.youtube.com/t/terms) - and we know how many YouTube downloaders there are out there that YouTube don't "authorise".

It does not seem to appear in the index list with iviewnapper or iviewcmd.
However if you use iviewcmd to create a download entry for 08/09/10 and then manually edit the download_list.xml file to point to 09/09/10 instead of 08/09/10, then it will download.
I guess it is on the server, but not listed properly in the index (or else it has spurious characters that are confusing the index parser).

No, "7.30 Report 08-09-10.mp4" has always been there. They wanted "7.30 Report 09-09-10.mp4". Unless you mean 08-09-10 is the same program as 09-09-10? It's not listed on the iView site and nobody has complained on their forum either (not very popular, eh?).

Looks like they haven't listed it. I used the batch file downloader to select the 23/09/2010 show and changed the filename in cache\download_list.xml.

I did much the same - iViewNapper has a Debug switch, that writes a batch file; so in that .bat file I changed the episode info in a similar way to you and 'nothing happened'. Is there a switch in rtmpdump (http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/rtmpdump-freeware-console-RTMP-downloading-application.htm) that shows a 'file not found' message? What's the URL for the cache\download_list.xml file?
Actually, I recall now that (a few weeks ago) when using the commandline batch downloader that you jointly authored, I edited that xml file while the batch operation was active, then re-ran the download request.

Don't know why it didn't work for 'Napper, but I used iView_Downloader_v15.70.bat. Then I selected the 23/09/2010 show and went back to the main menu. After that, I edited the "download_list.xml" file (there should be a "cache" directory in the directory that iView_Downloader_v15.70.bat is in) so that the file name had the date changed from 23 to 22.

Was working fine previously, so I just wanted an example command line parameter (one that is known to work) so I can test that here.

What is the exact command line delivered to rtmpdump as specified by your program? Maybe it is something to do with unrecognised characters making their way into the incantation instead - rather than an actual verification fault.

I typed it in manually on the command line. The exact same line you pasted, for Hostworks. but with a different token. It used to work. Next i'm going to try calculating the hash manually again and see what happens.
Edit: I think I know what's happening. I forgot to link it with a library that gives the program unix-path compatibility, so it tries to save ./.swfinfo but can't (./ is not a valid Amiga-style directory path) . .swfinfo I believe is still read, even if it has just downloaded and calculated the hash itself when .swfinfo doesn't exist. I.E It makes .swfinfo, then immediately reads it. .. or so i'm guessing, because i've tried my iView script on OS3 (68k machine) and it works like clockwork. The only difference is the unix style path compatibility layer which i'm guessing is making it work.

I have yet another problem - files not found. I just don't understand how I can play them on the ABC iView player, yet (both) iViewNapper and the iView batch downloader can't locate the 2 files.
These ones are for kids - a series called Jinx. Episodes 1-9 are mounted on iView. I can DL 5,6,8 - but not 7 and 9.
But they do play OK at the iView site - all of them.
Apart from getting one or other episode, I want to understand why the downloaders fail.
Examining the download_list.xml file, it shows this:
[Jinx Series 1 Episode 1][kids/jinx_10_01_01.mp4]
[Jinx Series 1 Episode 2][kids/jinx_10_01_02.mp4]
[Jinx Series 1 Episode 3][kids/jinx_10_01_03.mp4]
[Jinx Series 1 Episode 4][kids/jinx_10_01_04.mp4]
[Jinx Series 1 Episode 5][kids/jinx_10_01_05.mp4]
[Jinx Series 1 Episode 6][kids/jinx_10_01_06.mp4]
[Jinx Series 1 Episode 7][kids/jinx_10_01_07.mp4]
[Jinx Series 1 Episode 8][kids/jinx_10_01_08.mp4]
[Jinx Series 1 Episode 9][kids/jinx_10_01_09.mp4]
(opened with TextPad 5, copied and pasted to here).
No odd characters, all lines look the same - but 7 and 9 fail to download.
Both downloaders initially show Connected... in rtmpdump, then 20+ seconds later there's failure.
I'll try again in a few hours or days, but it's understanding that I would appreciate (I don't care much about these episodes, really).
[Edit]
A couple of hours elapsed, and I can download these. Strange...

2 days on, and they must be doing something drastic since batch DL and iVN both crash on startup (can't get the catalog).
Or, is this 'normal behaviour' when the catalog file is being updated or has been deleted from its usual location?

I think SBS are also mucking about as neither batch or SBSnapper will obtain the catalogue. Perhaps they are working together to thwart the downloaders.
I will have a look at the Nappers over the next few days.
The mongrels have timed it well, I just started annual leave for 2 weeks, so looks like fixing these will be one or two projects in that time.

From what I've gathered ABC has completed the switch over to the new api2, and changed the formatting of the json etc
the auth url is now
http://tviview.abc.net.au/iview/auth/?v2
with handshaker now defunct with the action of the url changed to redirect to iview itself
and the new series index and series urls are
http://tviview.abc.net.au/iview/api2/?seriesIndex
http://tviview.abc.net.au/iview/api2/?series=!insert series number here!
it appears that a new formatting method is now used here meaning it cannot be fixed by a simple url switch (I know I tried :) )
this is rather annoying, especially as iviewNapper still worked for me at 1:30 this morning...
oh by the way mce, since you have to fix them anyway, can you remove the focus lock on iviewNapper and SBSnapper, it is rather annoying that you cant minimise them other than using show desktop...(forgot about it since I last asked in April :) )
I'm afraid that's about all the help I'll be, anything beyond this is out of my knowledge range.

then I just followed what the links and subsequent xml files gave me, with a little of trial and error along the way.

had to google it, but in principle it seems similar, would have to compare to see if same results.
EDIT: gave it a crack and yes you'd be able to use fiddler, though unlike urlsnooper it doesn't capture rtmp addresses, which isn't really important for this, but does come in handy at times to debug the downloaders.
also I don't really like the interface, but that's probably due to me being used to urlsnoooper.

I had the same reaction with URL Snooper (had to look it up) - watched the video, and copied it out of my cache, but I'll have to convert swf to flv or something else. Seems easy to use, with the filters, so it will be useful.

SBS
The batch and GUI downloaders can't handle one show "Can GM Food Save The World? Full Ep". It plays OK on the SBSPlayer.
Maybe it's the ?
The shows.xml first line, for Channel 94, is:
[1][24832][Can GM Food Save The World? Full Ep][DOC_FE_Can_GM_Food_Save_The_57_324832]
Otherwise, both SBS downloaders are working OK.

No, SBS is OK - bar the usual typos, repeats, delayed mounts, etc.
I'm amazed that some episodes are completely mis-named as another in the series.
It would be nice if ABC and SBS cooperated with the more systematic approach of iView - though they (ABC) are not immune to the occasional typo or stuff-up.

same here, pity this looks interesting...
hey mce prior to the latest shake up I was using iViewNapper_20100715 simply cause a) it worked and b) it had subtitles off by default, and I was wondering if it would be too difficult/painful for iViewNapper to parse its own exe file name similar to how Batch picture-resize (http://www.rw-designer.com/picture-resize) does so that if exe name is iViewNapper_20101014 then subtitles off by default or if iViewNapper_20101014s then subtitles on by default? then a simple name change keeps you preference.

Hi mce,
A possible global bug in iVN Lite.
Running latest iViewNapperLite.hta (directory number is 20100816) in XP Home SP3
IE error message thrown at beginning, letting nothing run after the iVN Lite window opens.
Internet Explorer Script Error
Line: 28
Char: 3
Error: Invalid procedure call or argument: 'left'
Code: 0
URL: file:///C:/Program%20Files/iViewNapperLite_20100816/ivnlite.vbs
We've been running iVN Lite smoothly for many months now.
Yesterday we applied KB983583 - "Security Update for .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 and 3.5 SP1 on Windows SErver 2003 and Windows XP x86" and the updater reported successful installation.
The bug began after that update - for what it's worth.
The big Napper (your latest version 20101014) runs fine.
thanks for all your support for your apps!

The JSON data has missing fields and these must be dealt differently than before.
"ABC iView Downloader (batch version) v15.70" started failing on wed 13/10/2010. Is this likely the same problem mentioned by "mce" above?
I noticed that v15.7 uses "http://173.230.146.115/iview/api/?seriesIndex" which is empty now but "http://173.230.146.115/iview/api2/?seriesIndex" seems to have JSON type data.
I am not a napper user, but was just wondering does napper shares the same backend json_parser.exe and json_parser_ser.exe binaries? Is possible to use the napper JSON parser as quick workaround till next version comes out.

For the record iVN uses .Net framework 3.5 inbuilt deserialize class for JSON.
iVNlite uses a Javascript class.
BTW: There is no update to iVNlite yet, hopefullt it will be today but may be a bit longer.

Thanks Anywho for the prompt update to the batch file downloader.
A general question for everyone out there...
I generally try and download in my off peak time 2am-8am.
I usually am up late and select the programs I want with the batch file, and then kick off the download before I go to bed, which means I am using peak time before the 2am crossover to off peak.
Does anyone else have a good method to schedule a download of a batch of programs?
I was thinking of modifying the existing batch file to be able to select the programs and then allow me to save the download.xml file it creates. Then schedule a different batch file which would load up the xml file and connect, etc, and then proceed to download the files at the scheduled time without any user interaction.
Not sure of the complications, or if this is feasible, but any suggestions would be appreciated...
Thanks.

I have created a modified version of the iView_Downloader batch file for you to experiment with. You can get it from here (http://www.4shared.com/file/ScxsAfIq/iView_Later_v10.html).
You must get the download_list.xml file from the cache directory and put it in the same directory as the batch files. You must do this before you close iView_Downloader_v15.80 because iView_Downloader_v15.80 clears the cache directory before it starts and ends!

You did overwrite the files in the your old "bin" directory with the new ones in the zip archive, didn't you?
I could make a batch file version for you so that I can see exactly where the message is coming up. I'd just alter the "Invalid selection" messages so that each one is unique and then you could just tell me which message you are getting. Do you want to try that?

Ah! Yes there is a bug... It's OK for Hostworks, but Akamai will get the issue...
On Akamai servers, the first file will be dropped because the batch file will try to use the Hostworks server info first. Then once it skips the first file it actually get the correct server (Akamai) info assigned to you. Notice in my log file that the first file has no server name? No server name defaults to Hostworks which is right for me, but not someone on Akamai.
Thank you for your log file. That has helped find the solution to your problem :) I'll fix it in a minute, and upload it to the same URL as before. :o

Again, nothing was touched in the logfile stuff in the transition to v15.80 (no need to). You should only get a "download.log" file when more than one file is in your download list.

I've updated the iView Downloader batch file version. You can grab it from here (http://www.4shared.com/file/750EOTqx/iView_Downloader_v1580.html).
There is no "minimal" download because the JSON parsers have been changed and "xml.exe" has been removed (no longer needed).
Thank you very much :D

I've been a bit busy lately but I'm working on it now so hopefully I can get it working again soon.
EDIT:
Finished! New scripts are on the wiki now. I've tried to write the script so that the same script works on both Linux and OSX, so the only thing that is different is the rtmpdump binary. I've also uploaded an OSX version which is untested but will hopefully work.
I've tested the Linux script and it works for me on Hostworks however Akamai and OSX haven't been tested since I don't have a Mac.
vipher,
Thank you. The script is working ok for me now.

Yeah, ABC "updated" iView again last week... Most of the downloaders have been updated. See the iView Downloaders Wiki (http://iviewdownloaders.wikia.com/wiki/ABC_iView_Downloaders_Wiki) for links. Also, vipher has done an update - check the post here (http://stream-recorder.com/forum/showpost.php?p=22284&postcount=238).

I must add my appreciation to mce x 2 and to Anywho x 2.
On another matter: the ABC iView Messageboard makes good reading - and a warning (see later).
Occasionally a program is not at all what it seems!
Ashes to Ashes Se 2 Ep 3 is actually Ep 2 (http://www2b.abc.net.au/tmb/Client/Message.aspx?b=98&m=9799&ps=50&dm=2)
La Stupenda is not Joan Sutherland (http://www2b.abc.net.au/tmb/Client/Message.aspx?b=98&m=9812&ps=50&dm=2)
Gimme Gimme Gimme - Episode 7 (http://www2b.abc.net.au/tmb/Client/Message.aspx?b=98&m=9814&ps=50&dm=2)
Each of these is something different than its episode title (or even the show). I must admit I'm not a great fan of any of these, though.
Also, saw that early October, ABC Evening News was the same day's news, for about 4 days in a row, even though the date changed each day!
This post is not intended as a criticism of iView staff (I've done enough of that, and they get heaps I think judging by the Messageboard), but if people are going to schedule a lot of downloads it's a warning that they may not be what you think!
In the past, I've had technical glitches within an episode (and there are occasional reports on iView Messageboard about bad synch between audio and video - not to mention CC that are very badly out). When these are mentioned on the Messageboard, and the Moderator reads them, then a few days later there may be a fixed version mounted (with an absence for a day or three).

I'm having a problem with iView Downloader v15.80. Many of the files are coming up as "invalid selection"
)
Its working great today :) don't know what happened there but yay its working. I actually think there was nothing wrong and it was the flu I had that confused me, now where's the embarrassed icon :D
Oh yes, found it :o

Thanks Vipher for the new script!
Unfortunately, on my Mac OSX 10.6.4, when I run the file : runme_first, I get the following messages in terminal:
chmod: rtmpdump_universal: No such file or directory
chmod: flvstreamer_universal: No such file or directory
chmod: ffmpeg: No such file or directory
chmod: iView_Downloader_OSX_6.8.command: No such file or directory
logout
[Process completed]
and the iView_Downloader_OSX_6.8.command shell has the message of insufficient access priviledges.
Did I implement the scripts correctly?
Thanks again

So you've extracted the zip file to a folder and run the runme_first and this is the output?
If that's what you did then I have no idea why it's not working... I'll see if I can find a Mac I can test this on tomorrow.
Is it possible to change the permissions manually?

Hi Vipher. Thanks again for your update.
Yes - after extracting from the zip file, the iView_Downloader folder with individual files were all there (incl the Iview Downloader Unix Shell Script, read me.txt, runme_first etc).
This was the output from the runme_first file when I tried to execute it. I tried to manually change permissions for all of the individual files within the folder, but with no joy.
Thanks again for working on this.
Aeolus
