I've just downloaded iView_Downloader_OSX_v7.0 and there are problems when trying to download after performing a search.

1. Retrieve latest program list from iview
2. Add items to list and select current list
3. Perform a search via 's' option
4. fireman as search term returns 8 episodes of Fireman Sam
5. 'a' to select all
6. Option 4 to download the list results in errors on every file

The list actually contains the following files
kids/firemansam_07_01.mp4
kids/firemansam_07_02.mp4
kids/firemansam_07_03.mp4
kids/firemansam_07_04.mp4
kids/firemansam_07_05.mp4
kids/firemansam_07_06.mp4
kids/firemansam_07_07.mp4
kids/firemansam_07_08.mp4

Clearing the list and adding one at a time from the main program list gives a list that looks like the following.

Fireman Sam Series 7 Episode 1 Blow Me Down kids/firemansam_07_01.mp4

Fireman Sam Series 7 Episode 2 Pontypandy Extreme kids/firemansam_07_02.mp4

Manually adding each program results in a list that can be downloaded successfully.

I am having trouble with the iview(ABC) downloader 1.3.6 running on Firefox 8.0.1 and Mac OSX 10.5.8. The Dialog Box doesn't allow me to enter file type (it's empty) and rather than a download, it just creates a text file. Also the add-on icon doesn't appear in the bottom right hand of the status bar. Any suggestions?

Like coolforcats, I am having the same problems and results.

I have had some problems trying to download from iView yesterday/today (4/5 Jan). The process starts, but nothing happens.

I am using FF 9.0.1 and have tried on both Mac (OS X Lion) and Win XP, but get the same problem/result. Any suggestions/help would be greatly appreciated.

I have updated the addon and fixed a few things: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/iviewfox/versions/

One thing to note though, the iview site uses javascript that checks what version of flash you have installed; and even though I have included a version of rtmpdump that is compiled to run on PowerPC's the iview site still requires a pretty recent version of flash to work properly, and the most recent versions of flash don't support PowerPC processors. :(

Also, if you get one of the security warning messages on OSX about "b.command has been downloaded from the internet, are you sure you want to open it?" - just select open.

Nice work gents (and ladies, if there are any!)

I'm on an Intel MacBook Pro, running iViewFox (lovely, btw) and I've been trawling this and other threads to discover a specific bit of info about the iView codes that are used to identify each individual download.

Is there a way to get a listing of all the expired iView "a" numbers, or an archive of old ?seriesindex files because ABC have a habit of leaving their streaming media on the servers, and I'm wondering if they also do that for 'expired' iView episodes?

I've missed a few Doctor Who S4 episodes I'd like see if I can get to download.

Also, the flv stripper works a treat, but I'm wanting to play the mp4s directly in iTunes, and it doesn't seem to have a way to force 16:9 anamorphic proportions on the 640x480 file. Any thoughts?

Cheers.

The "iView batch downloader" (maintained by Anywho) is a convenient tool for doing this.
If the Series is still current (eg, Dr Who Series 4 - it does have episodes listed as of today), then it is possible to select a current show, then edit the 'control file' that the batch downloader creates.
The edit must use the pattern that iView has decided on for that particular Series (it is otherwise not easily predictable).
Once the modified control file is saved, the BDL can try to get it. If the file is on the server, success.
Since the parameters for rtmpdump will be the same for MacOS as for Windows (batch or GUI), the same method should work.

I will leave it up to others to comment on whether something could be worked out so you could do the same. It might be a bit 'manual'.

However, if you post which of the Dr Who shows you want, it would be simple to construct the download_list.xml file needed, so that if you used Parallels and installed the BDL you could easily get them, if available. So: List them here or send me a PM, I will check if they're still there, you can take it from that point.

.. to get a listing of all the expired iView "a" numbers, or an archive of old ?seriesindex files

I don't think so.
However, if the main index JSON files have been saved for a few months, it is possible to extract all the Episode IDs - which point to a location on the server - and together with the Series IDs (which remain constant, and from which you can construct a URL in in a similar way), an ad hoc or even a systematic trawling of the server could be done for anything ever mounted on iView.
(This is a bit hypothetical; I wouldn't want to attempt this)

[Edit]
See next post: Dr Who Series 4 Eps 1,2,3 are not available now.

Dr Who Series 4

Currently, all Episodes from 4 onwards are available.
Checking, using the method outlined above, none of the earlier shows (#1, #2, #3) is on the server.

The BDL's download_list.xml looks like this for Episode 4

[Doctor Who Series 4 - Episode 4 The Sontaran Stratagem][doctorwho_04_04.mp4]

If this is edited, then saved in the \cache\ folder, it needs to be -

[Doctor Who Series 4 - Episode 3][doctorwho_04_03.mp4]
[Doctor Who Series 4 - Episode 2][doctorwho_04_02.mp4]
[Doctor Who Series 4 - Episode 1][doctorwho_04_01.mp4]

If I had access to a Windows OS that I could muck about with, I'd be all too happy to use BDL. I may save that for next week.

Since I'm using iViewFox, which is also a beautifully easy addon to Mac Firefox, I've had a look at the iv.jsm file, and notice that it calls the series list using:

req.open("GET", 'http://tviview.abc.net.au/iview/api2/?series='+seriesNum, true);

So, using the series number for Dr Who from the current ?seriesindex file, I called up the currently listed files, and notice that this listing includes the naming file format listed there that appears in the BDL cache (i.e. the "n" value "doctorwho_04_04.mp4", "doctorwho_04_03.mp4", etc)

Do you reckon there's a way to simply construct a url that can be entered in a browser that will point to that specific ("n" value) filename - and therefore also be able to be pointed to the logical (but unlisted) filenames - without having to use BDL?

I mean, the mpg4 file has to be physically stored somewhere doesn't it?

blaircam

It notes here:
http://iviewdownloaders.wikia.com/wiki/ABC_iView_Downloaders_Wiki#Series_JSON_format

that the url associated with the file can/should be listed in the json under "l", but I can't see an "l" value in any of the lists I've been able to access so far.

No. The URLs are not "rtmp" but "http". I'm not aware of any browser that can read an rtmp URL and go to it. "rtmp" URLs are, of course, handled by Adobe's Flash or "equivalent" in a browser.

They sure are or sure aren't. Don't you think it would be easy to flip a file-access permission switch or even alias/link to a useless dummy file/link on the server making it appear to be gone? Once they've done that then you've got 2 chances of getting to the file - Buckley's and F.A. :(

:D I figured I'd either have asked an easy question, or I'd end up needing to go and brush up on rtmp protocol. No worries.

Okay, but if they are still accessible, although not publicised, it would be a matter of making logical alterations to the rmtp file path of 'current' episodes in order to guess and download the expired files (?)

Yep. They do change the format of the names sometimes (but not enough to get hung up on it).

You'd need something flexible (something like the Windows batch script) so that you can easily mess around with likely filenames and paths.

that the url associated with the file can/should be listed in the json under "l", but I can't see an "l" value in any of the lists I've been able to access so far.

This relates to a program website and not to the path of the video files, eg http://abc.com.au/catalyst/ this tag is used to provide the "go to website" link in the episode description, where appropriate.

I mean, the mpg4 file has to be physically stored somewhere doesn't it?

this can be further complicated by the fact there are 3 companies involved (ABC, Hostworks and Akamai) and as shown by the f and g tags in the json file a fair bit of automation in the access management, which may also extend to storage management.

For Example We don't know how much storage capacity ABC is renting(though if someone could be bothered adding up the size of all files on the server including unlisted we'd get a ball park idea...maybe), so files that appear to be "gone" may still exist on the akamai and/or hostworks servers and just be restricted (or simply have the extension renamed/deleted), or it may have actually been removed to make way for a new file.

They would certainly be stored somewhere in ABC at least for as long as their licencing allows, but as that is off the grid doesn't do us any good.

Hence, my earlier short reply recommending the procedure for using the (Windows) batch downloader - which Anywho taught me how to manipulate.
For the Dr Who series (S4), the earlier episodes 1,2,3 had been removed/renamed/made invisible to our downloaders.

Hi has anyone tested the SBS napper 20120328 recently as it no longer appears to work.

Hadn't used it in a long time, but it SBS OnDemand is (finally) having a rework, hopefully toward that true iView competitor they talked about ages ago.

There's big problems at the moment as SBS has changed the content delivery method, rendering current downloaders useless.

It will take some time to understand the new system and if possible provide something useful.

If you want to follow progress on the situation go to The whirlpool SBS downloader forum thread (http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1342590&p=-1#bottom)

Something that I should have indicated a few weeks ago - simultaneous downloads (ie, downloading one show, then another - before the first has finished its download) has a problem.

It just bit me when using the latest SBSNapper - it is the same with the iViewNapper.

Problem: the SAME show can be downloaded twice (or more), if you're a heavy clicker (or forget).

It seems that the client downloader process (curl.exe, or rtmpdump.exe) is invoked and runs, but at the file system level there is only a single FLV / MP4 file created.

I don't know how Windows and those executables managae that, but it happens.

The only problem that I can see is that you will use up your Quota from your ISP. The final video works OK.

I think this is the same with p7Napper, too.

(something for mce to do in his spare time :p )

gxdata

I've noticed that the srt files are no longer being downloaded
A couple of shows have defective caption content (eg, the very long caption file for Q&A S5 E15), which may even cause downloaders to fail.

These erors occur from time to time, and the downloaders (like iViewNapper) are continually adjusted to cope with them.

Which SRT / sub-title / captions are you missing? Can you see them working OK in the iView player interface?

I've just migrated to Win7 32bit from XP SP2.

Iviewnapper 20120206 was working fine under XP, but under Win7 it (and the newer 20120514) is giving an unhandled exception error "data invalid at root level line 1 pos 1".

Anyone know what might be the problem?

Interestingly both SBSnapper and the CH7 equivalent are both working fine under Win7.

It may be a malformed file at the iView end (it seems like an XML error - maybe the captions file). Which show is involved?

You can 'turn on' debugging in iViewNapper, in order to save those files, and then it is possible to give a more definite explanation.

Those actions should not affect, nor are they necessary, to the downloader or the things it uses and does.

But it is important that you have 'Napper.exe and rtmpdump.exe (the appropriate one for you version of the 'Napper), in a folder that is NOT under c:\program files\ or c:\program files (x86)\

Napper and support files are not on the system drive at all, so should not be a problem there.

Only iviewnapper is giving this problem (SBSnapper is fine) and only under Win7-32: it doesn't even provide a list of programs, just says "initialising" for a long time then spits an unhandled exception.

Win7-32 came with .net4: would this cause an issue since iviewnapper uses .net3.5 I believe?

I understood that Windows 7 came with .NET Framework v3.5, pre-installed. But you can check in the Control Panel applet Programs and Features, or I can point you to a small application that will tell you all of the .NET Framework versions installed on your system.

I'm not sure that could be a problem, anyway. I'm not sure I can easily test if it would be, though.

SBSnapper is fine
[edit]
Something else is causing your problem (ie, not the .NET Framework version) as SBSNapper is based on .NET v3.5 too, if I'm not mistaken.

.. just says "initialising" for a long time then spits an unhandled exception.[edit2]
Aha - what you need to do is to look at the details, right-click and select all, copy, and paste that into an empty page in Notepad; then click Continue.

The selection just above the ********* down to the second lot of ****** is meaningful (the rest is not useful to mce or me, to understand what the problem is).

[edit3]
This link is to a very useful small utility, free, for showing each installed version of .NET on your system - both 32-bit and 64-bit (if you have Windows 64-bit operating system). http://www.asoft.be/prod_netver.html (It now supports up to .NET v4.5)

You can easily copy the info to a text file.

Hi darian,

The Nappers all require .NET 3.5 or better to work and because both sbsNapper and p7Napper work, then I see no reason iVN shouldn't work.

As far as I know the user base is using Windows versions from XP 32 bit to W7 64 bit (If anyone uses Windows 8 let me know please) with the key being the .NET version.

Please do the check that gxdata suggests but I suspect that ABC were having one of their bad server moments they have time to time in busy periods.

I just tried here now and both iVN and sbsN worked OK.

3. Are you using a proxy server? (Uni, Work etc..)

No

4. Have you disabled all Anti-Virus Suites or similar during testing?

No.

Do you mean anti-virus or firewall?

I'm trying to become familiar with Win7 Firewall Control, but nothing pops up for IVN when started, so I thought it wasn't even getting to the XML lookup stage.

5. With a web browser can you download the following URLs?
http://www.abc.net.au/iview/xml/config.xml
http://tviview.abc.net.au/iview/api2/?seriesIndex

Yes.

Okay, I disabled the firewall temporarily and suddenly IVN started working.

I re-enabled Win7 Firewall Control and it opened a dialogue to add IVN.

It seems Win7 FC uses a single reference name of WindowsApplication1 for these type of programs and since there was already a rule for WindowsApplication1 for SBSN, I guess it just ignored it.

I'm coming from a very easy to use Kerio Personal Firewall 2.1.5 with XP and finding nothing equivalent for Win7. The closest recommended freeware was Win7 FC, but that is proving to be a pain. Anyone have better suggestions?

Yes, I used AVG for several years and for th last 18+ months have had peace and quiet with Security Essentials. I thought AVG was a vast improvement over Norton, McAfee, etc but MSE is what all the others had the chance to be - and failed.

It would probably be a good idea for the 'Nappers (and any other downloader) to become a little more unique, in terms of the project naming etc etc. I think that could allow firewalls to discriminate better (and troubleshooting might be easier).

I was going to ask what the show was that caused the unhandled exception in .NET - for the XML file - thinking it was malformed XML file from iView's server. That may still be so? Was there a show that you got to try to download - or did you just get as far as the main index?
But the firewall seems to have been the major impediment.

The firewall was the major impediment as it didn't allow downloading the first XML list.

I'm using Windows Firewall and Microsoft Security Essentials, but it's a different learning curve. The firewall seems to be quite slow in displaying a dialogue to permit/deny access.

Whilst on the subject of firewalls, should one EnableAll or just EnableOutgoing for most programs?

No. It's a GeoIP block. You can only download/view through an Australian proxy server (or similar).

Thanks for the heads-up! Unfortunately it won't fix itself up... I (or someone else) will have to do something about it. This was accounted for in the original instance of when it was "Q & A" (note the spaces), but it appears to be another attempt to thwart the D/l'ers - although it should be OK on mce's IViewNapper or Yansky's iViewFox (yes/no?).

I'm a little scant on time for this stuff ATM, but I might have it fixed in the next day or two (hopefully) ;)

My firefox extension got reject because of some false-positives with antivirus software, so looks like I'll have to just host it on dropbox.

Here's the email I received:

I'm getting three different virus positives for your add-on:

They do seem to be false positives, but it's a lot of noise that we unfortunately can't accept.

So which version of RTMPdump is the "virus-total scan" against? I've run the one mce & I use (the one I compiled) and that one doesn't come up with any issues.

Result:

If it's the Mac one, then I don't understand what the issue is  How on earth can you run a Mac executable from within a Windows OS? And the test was using a Windows virus checker

I'm a bit concerned that your rtmpdump.exe is showing at least 4 hits on the virus-total scan. It shows 2 when packed, and 4 when unpacked! Mind you, neither of these trip my VS (MSE).

Maybe you have/had a rogue in your dev-environment?

That fix above was because in VB.NET one should use & to concatenate strings, but sometimes the old habit of using + creeps in and can cause errors.

The actual fix was probably one where "Fix incorrect characters in filename" as spaces and & (and more) can cause problems. I convert '&' to 'and' in output filenames and wrap it in quotes.

Sometime yesterday someone caught up with the backlog; now I see 241 Series so back to 'normal'. Perhaps they can also re-train or discipline the ppl who do the uploads - judging by 5 weeks of duplicated listings in the RSS feeds, and quite a few stuff-ups and double uploads of shows at iView, the volume of work is getting on top of someone.

I have two users that are having similar problems. RTMPDump seems to connect ok for them, but then they get an Access Denied error. The weird thing is it happens after the authentication handshake succeeds. I thought at first perhaps the authentication token might have become invalid or something, but the error seems to occur almost straight away.

Here's pastebins of the two users debug output:

Can you guys see anything in there that might point to the problem?

Why might the download come unstuck? I get a success rate of well under 50% when trying to collect ABC programmes.

Using the iView_Downloader (Windows batch version), the command line should actually be something like:
rtmpdump.exe --resume -r rtmp://203.18.195.10/ -a ondemand?auth=F9F6DFA62C4
364AED3ED -y mp4:doctorwho_03_08 -o "Doctor Who Series 3 - Doctor Who Series 3 E
pisode 8 Human Nature.mp4" -W http://www.abc.net.au/iview/images/iview.jpg

There seems to be extra data that probably shouldn't be there (the "&mp4:doctorwho_03_08") in the "auth=" parameter. The iView server would likely see that as an invalid authentication and disconnect you after a while (90 to 180 secs.).

You'll have to wait until mce investigates some more I guess

Thanks Anywho. I'm sure mce will look at what I've sent in and come up with some ideas.

What intrigues me is that some people consider it perfectly legal to record programmes when they are broadcast (using their DVD recorders, or VCRs for those with old technology), and those who subscribe to FetchTV get equipment which allows them to record programmes received via that internet TV service, yet it's supposedly not legal to record off the stations' web sites. The Copyright Act, with all its amendments, allows recording of TV programmes for personal use, and doesn't specify a means of getting them.

Would someone like to offer some explanation?

I am using iViewNapper (not the new trial one - the one before that I think) and I will get 99.99% success - not even timeouts or resumes, most of the time, when I use my old Belkin modem (bought years ago from iiNet, my ISP).

When I use my BoB2 modem with VOIP, the timeouts are excessive (they default to 30 seconds, if no parameter is passed to rtmpdump), and can make the download time 5 to 20 tiimes as long, when all the manual intervention is taken into account.

This can be tested with the 2 different modems within minutes, any time of day, with nobody using the VOIP phone service.

Indeed, I can set the ADSL Optimiser setting (at iiNet Toolbox) to anything from 'Thrillseeker' down to the slowest, with no change in the timeouts and resumes.

I have put up with this for 3-4 months, would you believe?

Amazingly, whichever downloader I use with SBS, the BoB2 modem is fast and error-free. And, using mce's p7Napper at Plus!7, it is also fast and free of timeouts.

Explain that !

... yet it's supposedly not legal to record off the stations' web sites. The Copyright Act, with all its amendments, allows recording of TV programmes for personal use, and doesn't specify a means of getting them.

Would someone like to offer some explanation?

The restriction has always, since the beginning of streaming radio way back in the old RealPlayer days, been that online broadcasting is presented 'as if' it's the same as terrestrial broadcasting i.e no access for the audience to the whole original source, be it film, tape, disc or magnetic wire.
But access to original source is always possible with digital media. One way or another.
The management of streaming online has always been to invoke DRM (research all that yourself, it takes up quite a bit of the web to go into the explanations and arguments for what is essentially a failed paradigm). Which DRM is effected in a whole lot of silly ways, one of which is easily defeated by open source use of the rtmp protocol - as in rtmpdump which is getting used here. rtmpdump in effect gets the file **streamed**, but nice and fast, and it also copies it **dumps** it too. Nothing illegal but inconvenient for drm patsies.
The legality of **copying** a show for personal use, however you do it, isn't the question; you could run one of quite a few capture applications right now to record anything that plays on your home computer. I'm guesssing you're here because you would also like to get it **fast** copied.
But the owners of stuff that gets broadcast, often attach restrictions to it that the broadcaster has to abide by in return for broadcasting rights... one of which is to **not** allow rapid file getting, even if it's a legal method which rtmpdump is.
So illegal really isn't the problem for viewers, it's a problem for the broadcaster. And they really do know that it's impossible to manage with any drm kind of stuff, so all they can really do is look away from this kind of self-help and try not to let the word get around too quickly.
Very sad because the people who could really do with the help that rtmpdump gives are those with not enough dosh to get good gear and nice fast dsl connections, so their streaming doesn't work well.

Nothing illegal going on here, just self-help against a heap of silly roadblocks.

I'm still having trouble with 'napper even with the newer version. what I see is the menu coming up slower, then it will close or bring up that dialogue box giving me the option to close or continue, sometimes it just closes instead of giving the programme list or closes when I select the episode or just closes the dos box when I hit run.

What is consistent is that I get the most trouble when iview is the busiest. If I try after 11pm or 6am it tends to work. Even the weekends are better.

We are in the demographic that 'napper et al is designed for, fast broadband will never be an option, heck, the local telephone exchange isn't even adsl equipped (too few people in working distance). The only way to be able to watch ABC or SBS is via the internet. Don't even ask about NBN if you don't want a firey rant.

I could try it when it fails next week but someone will need to give me step by step instructions to enable error logging.

Edit: Just tried to download a programme and get 'index out of bounds of the array' then it freezes until I click quit.

BoB2 modem - all my iView download problems have been fixed by a firmware upgrade from 2581 to 2600.

So far, 45 minutes without a timeout and only one automatic resume, without having to start the rtmpdump process over again.

Since I have had the BoB2, it has been almost unusable, such that I would unplug it and use a 5 year old Belkin modem instead when wanting to download from iView.

Can you do a speedtest with www.ozspeedtest.com and report the download speed in KB/s, here? That will give us an idea of how slow / fast your ADSL service is.

Have you tried any of the other downloaders? Perhaps the latest batch downloader would be an easy install, but see http://iviewdownloaders.wikia.com/wiki/ABC_iView_Downloaders_Wiki for all of them. The BDL v15.85 is at http://www.mediafire.com/?6nbta279wgd8c7n and was updated 2-3 weeks ago.

Hi, Since that spate of trouble I've had none since, even using the 20120514 version. Mind you the weather has been good since then! When the weather is fine my download speed is 622B/s. Only because the 3G modem is built into and optimised for the laptop (panasonic CF-19). I just tried the 3G gateway on the main computer and it is running 314KB/s, when it rains heavily it struggles to even maintain a connection!

So it's fine at the moment and I'll repost live figures when the speed crashes again. What it does seem to me though, is that unless the ABC broke something that they have subsequently fixed, my problems will be just related to poor internet rather than the 'napper.

rtmpdump is not downloading for me (Windows, batch / Napper / Helper) since ~ 10am WST today, just displaying INFO: Connected then closing.

iView Player seems OK for all the News category I have tried, and a few Arts and Kids (which FAIL with the downloaders).

I'm on iiNet but this is baffling to me. Has anyone else had this experience today?

Do you mean you can't get a complete download? Or do the downloaded videos fail to play properly?
If the former, what ISP and modem are you using?

My solution - amazing how you can forget to check the simplest things - was to turn off my (BoB2) modem for a couple of minutes, then wait until it powered up properly, and try the download again.

If that had not fixed the problem - ABC TV News from last night just completed - I would have tried my very old Belkin modem.

I discovered this thread after having problems with iViewFox today.

I've followed all the instructions with iViewNapper and am getting the same problem I did with iViewFox - any program over an hour or so stops at around the 70% mark. This is something that has happened off and on for ages now - it sometimes works and sometimes doesn't.

I just reset the modem and tried again with the same result.

PS Anyone know what's happened with iViewFox? It's no longer available and all links lead to an awful music video on YouTube. ;)

I have no knowledge of iViewFox (have not downloaded it).

But always helpful: exactly when you had the problem (iView servers are sometimes down / slow / erratic), who is your ISP, and what speed to you get (eg, using OzSpeedtest.com).

And, what's your current experience using the player at ABC iView (state what shows you tried).

After using iViewNapper for the first time, iViewFox seems to be very similar.

Today's download problem was between 0700&1030 AEST. I have found downloading any program longer than 1 hour has always been a hit & miss thing with RTMPDUMP.

I ended up watching the program (Wire in the Blood - 90mins) directly through iView with no hiccups.

"Your line speed is 7.96 Mbps (7964 kbps)"

ISP is Internode.

I've very rarely experienced any problem with iView. Only apparent ones indicated iView was down.

Your download rate is a little slow, but I don't think that is the problem.

Yes, it is frustrating to track down just where problems can be. My recent problem was with iiNet's BoB2 modem which handled rtmpdump downloads from elsewhere*, but gave incredibly poor experience when downloading from iView (though the ABC player seemed quite OK). I could change to another modem, and get 100% smooth and quick downloading with (say) iViewNapper.

Updating the firmware on the BoB2 modem completely fixed the problem.

Hey guys,

In case anyone is interested. I have written an ABC iView app which is implemented as a FUSE driver. This means that if you are running Linux you can 'mount' iview so that it appears on your computer as just another drive/folder. You can browse for shows using your file browser and then click on a show to watch it through your favourite media player. You can also download a show if you want just by dragging and dropping the show you want into another folder. As far as your computer knows, iView is like a USB flash drive. :)

The program is here:

http://github.com/garfunkel/auntie

The program has very few dependencies. Just three, and if you running most modern desktop distributions they will be in your repositories. The dependenies are FUSE, jannson (json library) and libxml2 (xml library).

Note: To program this I mainly used LLVM Clang, but many of you are using GCC. The program compiles perfectly under GCC. You can do this by changing 'clang' to 'gcc' in the makefile. If you still have issues compiling the code it could be because you have an older version of your build utils than mine. That's OK too, just change the -std=c11 to -std=c99.

The program is implemented in C and uses librtmp and doesn't call rtmpdump so this should help to avoid several issues people have been having with these types of apps.

Have fun!

Hi, and welcome! Nice to see a new face on the horizon. :)

Bizarre, but interesting idea you have there. Wow, way to think outside of the box!

WP scrapped your thread in the Linux forum - probably because of the so-called "ABC doesn't authorize or support downloading iView programs in any way" sentence in ABC's FAQ pages. Pretty sure YouTube has a similar clause, but I never see those threads canned there

Anyway, nice to see you here. Hope your stay is enjoyable :D

Unless we here from Yansky we can't be sure, but there is the possibility that he's been hit the same legal firewall that got Python-iview killed (insofar as you can kill anything released on the web). As to getting a copy you can use FEBE (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/febe/) to repackage iviewfox on your old pc into an installable xpi file you can copy to your new pc, open the xpi file with Firefox and viola.

My Guess is they are starting to mesh the ABC player with iview. Rather than have the same content in 2 places they just get iview to call on the ABC players copy, may be the first step into a fully integrated iview.

This is based on a quick look at the ep while trying to get some meaningful urls from urlsnooper, video appears to be a step down in quality (ABC player goes up to 400kbps bitrate while iview is 600kbps)

Urgently need some help / advice - I've run out of ideas
I can't get a download of "Artscape Episode 9 Bryan Ferry In Conversation With Virginia Trioli" - http://www.abc.net.au/iview/#/view/27115
(due to expire in 3 days)
I have tried HiDownloader - each time, only 17m of the 27.5m; and Firefox with latest FlashGot has greyed-out FlashGot Media.

Another Artscape problem - OK on iView Player, can download once it's going using Stream Transport - but the downloaders can't find the Series.
Superficially at least, the URL seems to be OK in the downloaders vs what shows when using the iView Player.

Has anyone noticed other shows/series @ iView that won't download with iViewNapper, etc?

What I do is to allow user to double-click a textbox that has the full name (Series + Episode), and edit it however needed.
That requires a new textbox, and a bit of coding, however (since I save a description file, and the image - which are also renamed).

I have been saving Play School for kids, and the last week iView has omitted the day (- Monday) that is usually tagged on. Otherwise, all eps have the same name for a week. So the renaming is useful for that.

I have iViewDownloader v7.0 for OSX and having a few issues lately.

I know that it's been pulled due to the legal action, but it still works - kind of.

I can updated the program list, but it now only contains kids shows (and many full series strangely).

The series.txt file contains the actual latest list of all iview shows but the possibleshows.txt is just a cut down list.

Any idea how to get the full list into possibleshows.txt so I can download some adult stuff?

Just a quick update; after the ABC asked me to remove iviewfox I had a bit of a think about an alternative and I stumbled upon xVideoServiceThief (http://xviservicethief.sourceforge.net/). It supports rtmpe and works on windows, OSX and linux.

Unfortuanately at the moment it doesn't support passing extra rtmp parameters. I have posted (https://sourceforge.net/p/xviservicethief/discussion/733046/thread/f275a6fe/) in the xVST forums and have received a response from the developer that this feature will be available in the next release.

It should also be possible to create a plugin for plus7 I think.

I've just been having a look at the contents of series.txt and it appears there is a new format.

Many of the files now have a 5 digit ID, where previously they were 6 for a show and 7 digits for a series ID.

Anybody skilled at SED to modify the file parsing?

I've had a play but it's beyond my primitive skills.

Seems it has not been accessible since about 4:00PM on 26/12/2014 - they probably haven't cleaned up the catalog entries.
There are a few others that behave that way - eg, allthe Tropfest episodes, currently.

Hi,

As most know, iviewnapperlite worked well with IE8 but had incompatibilities with IE9.

The problem in IE9 was an incompatibility between objects created in VBScript and Javascript.

In the past one could pass these objects between these two languages without problem but since IE9, no.

All one needs to do is to rewrite the VBScript code in Javascript and hey presto, it should work.

Off-topic, possibly a FFMPeg question?

I have an already-downloaded show that came in 2 parts, as two FLV files the first of which ends at exactly where the second starts. Each is about 1 hour play time (and they play well with VLC).

It was a stupid action of mine to think this was going to work, but ..

I did a copy /binary which creates a video file but VLC Media Player says the result is only 1 hour (ie, it is reading header info from the first part).

Ideas?

There is also a GUI fromtend further down the page.

In my experience with Andy's FLV joiner has problems with FLV's that are not VP6 to the point I stopped using it, probably due to the fact that H264 has come leaps and bounds over the last couple of years, but Andy's FLV Joiner hasn't been updated. With VP6 it works perfectly.

I use AviDemux (http://avidemux.sourceforge.net) to join videos (and to edit some) and despite its name its pretty much universal

I'm having problems (AVIMuxer, 2.6.1, 64-bit). I've never used this before.

The 2 files have identical format, VP6-E (On2), audio is MPEG-1 Audio layer 3. The bitrates are slightly different (892kbps and 1146kbps) and the WxH and aspect ratio are the same.
I can load file1, choose append and load file2, but I'm at sea with the settings I need (everything I tried fails - often with a suggestion the bitrate is too low).
Is there a help tutorial somewhere?

[edit]
I successfully joined the FLV files to another FLV file which seems fine, use Andy's FLV Joiner.
But I would like to convert to MP4 possibly H264 suitable for iPad. Is AVIDemuxer suitable, or should I use ffmpeg? I do have the right params lying around somwhere - previous help from blood.eaglz I think.

Incidentally, a few days ago I used ffmpeg to convert each part to mp4, then used copy /b to join - but I was disturbed by many tens of error messages from ffmpeg (something about 'droping', in yellow text). Maybe Andy's flv joiner just ignores any problems? (I am guessing).

if by params your talking about my flv to mp4 bat file for ffmpeg, I'm afraid it only works for a h264 flv. As you've stated that the files are VP6 that wont work.

AviDemux should work fine. Personally I use XviD4PSP 5 series (6 series played up for me and lacks some features last time I used it) (http://code.google.com/p/xvid4psp/downloads/list)

I think this has a problem at the server site - ie, it needs fixing at their end. Wait for a few hours or a day, and it will be fixed.

Originally, this was a part of "Sunday Best" series - some searching finds it under "The Best of Sunday Best", here (http://www.abc.net.au/tv/programs/sundaybest.htm).
The link at that pahe takes you back to the iView Player, here (http://www.abc.net.au/iview/?series=3328908#/series/3328908) - which is the same NULL result as iViewNapper is presented with.

So - wait, or send a message to ABC via the page at The Best of Sunday Best ?

I've just tried again and still no go. Previously when it has been a file
issue at the server you can't play the file 'live' either but in this case it

iViewNapper still won't download the show.

This may not help you much, but I would recommend playing the episode at iView Player, and capture with Stream Transport. It works for me.

At the iView Player, use the A to Z programs search, choose K, and click Kumare. It plays OK for me, and I can capture the video to disk.

The links shown in a browser along the way, if copied and then used at a later time are not useful, though.

Link 2 (http://www.abc.net.au/iview/#/view/24076).

Just why this happens for some shows/series (not only with Kumare), I don't know.

This is not appropriate here, but some of you guys will point me in the right direction, I'm sure.

Is there a forum here (or elsewhere) that might help me do a conversion of an.MP4 download/capture (used Stream Transport) from an ABC website?
I need to convert to the Sony/Panasonic MPEG format described here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AVCHD) ?

That is AVCHD

As a service to some friends, I would like to get a couple of shows onto an SD card and readable by their 2006/7 vintage TV (Panasonic TX-32LXD600A, commonly sold in Australia around that time).

Maybe I need to buy a WD media Player - I have seen chatter that recommends that as the only solution for the near-useless SD slot in those older Panasonic LCD TVs.

You can also consider a dick smith set top box, the media play back on them is surprisingly solid, I have a GH5930 which I use as a media player ($39.98 according to site) and it plays back pretty much anything I throw at it (avi,mp4,mkv,mpg haven't tried vob or dat/vcd) though it doesn't like vorbis (ogg audio), but few things do.

They're friggin' nifty little things, aren't they?!? Great value for their price. Does timer recording too. Had mine for about 6 months now. Hasn't missed a beat.

True, haven't used the pvr function too much though its nice to have standard mpeg-ts rather than some proprietary format or partition, its a pity that this functionality never seems to make it into their tvs though, the inbuilt pvr is a POS in them (including time-shift) and playback limited to Xvid/DivX. The funny thing is the box does roughly the same job as the big media players for a 1/3 the price, but doesn't really mention it in the manual so surprised the heck out of me when an mp4 played let alone an mkv :)

Seems good. I was considering one of the WD devices because of the WiFi and DLNA, but it would just be nice to put a few videos / pics onto a USB stick or drive and be able to play them on many of the older TVs.

If you're going to use "old" equipment, then these are great value for the price. They've got Composite, Component, and HDMI outputs so you're well covered there. I use the HDMI on a Samsung S27B350H LED monitor, but have fed it into Composite and Component TV's with great results.

I haven't tried Text Captions on stuff recorded via the PVR function (posts on WP say it's broken), but if you're interested I'll record something and see what the ins and outs are if you like (PM me) ;)

The last week or so I've been seeing:

------- YOUR CONNECTION INFORMATION -------
Internet Service Provider - Internode
ABC iView Server - Hostworks
Download Type - *** METERED ***

It always came up as UNMETERED before. The IP address content is coming from is: 203.18.195.10 - which is on the Node unmetered list: 203.18.195.0/24

So what is happening with the script? Running: iView_Downloader_v15.85.bat

Thanks!

Hi servalan.

Looks like they've changed the config file a bit and the parser in the batch file is getting confused. It still is "free"... You can check for yourself by going to:

hxxp://tviview.abc.net.au/iview/auth/?v2

You can view the source code for that page in your browser, or just look at the end of the line in your browser when you use the above link... It should say "]]> yes" meaning "unmetered".

Thank you for the bug report... I haven't downloaded from iView in a while now. I'll do a fix sometime on the weekend (hopefully).

Just an update to the above post...

If you want to fix it yourself, just open the iView_Downloader_v15.85.bat file in a plain text editor such as Notepad (NOT Word or WordPad!) and change line 55 from:

if "!AUTHLN!" == "9"
to:
if "!AUTHLN!" == "10"

and save the newly modified file as iView_Downloader_v15.86.bat and use that.

edit: New links to fixed files are in the Wikia (see first post on the first page of this thread for links to Wikia)

Hi folks,

I was looking at adding a plugin for playing these streams on an enigma2 receiver and I was using the XBMC add-on as a base.

The stream does not play however so I'm wondering if the rtmp stream format has changed since the development of the XBMC add-on.

This is a generated rtmp url that is currently produced but not playing:

rtmp://cp44823.edgefcs.net/ondemand?auth=daEbdcwcEbAdCcvcfbrczdoa9b8aVa4a3bf-brsJd8-8-mmn_rFxqN&aifp=v001 playpath=mp4:flash/playback/_definst_/fatherted_03_06 swfurl=http://www.abc.net.au/iview/images/iview.jpg swfvfy=true:Father Ted Series 3 Episode 6 Kicking Bishop Brennan Up The Arse

Anyone know if this is a valid url?

This downloads fine for Hostworks. I don't know about Akamai (I'm not on an Akamai served ISP).

PS: Don't try the above command lines now as the "auth" token will have expired by the time you read this;)

Make sure you delete the empty (0 byte) files before trying again, otherwise RTMPdump will keep doing it.

Federal Budget:

Government funds iview live streaming pilot
- $30 million in funding for ABC online services
TechWorld staff (Techworld Australia) - 15 May, 2013
(read online (http://www.computerworld.com.au/article/print/461867/government_funds_iview_live_streaming_pilot/))

The federal government's 2013-14 budget includes $30 million for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's online services, including its popular iview streaming platform.

The funding is intended to help maintain and expand the ABC's online content services, including a pilot for live streaming of ABC TV and radio.

"The funding will better equip the ABC to provide the mobile and online content that audiences are demanding in ever-increasing numbers," ABC’s managing director Mark Scott said.

The ABC's iview streaming service launched in 2008. The broadcaster launched an app for Apple's iPad in 2010 and for the iPhone in 2012. The ABC said an Android iview app in development [1] in October last year. The iview app is one of the 10 most popular iOS apps in Australia.

'Napper won't download live streams, as you know. But experience shows that some News 24 stuff appears on ABC websites, as videos that can be downloaded. Occasionally, they are also put onto iView.

Is this a known problem, or something on my end?

Not sure if you still have the problem, but your RTMP host/server is wrong, it should be cp53909.edgefcs.net.

I've never gotten the fallback server (which is cp44823.edgefcs.net) to work for me.

The rest of the arguments look correct, and I'm assuming that the part after the colon isn't part of the url but something the enigma2 uses to work out the title.

The Business 7 August stops at ~3Mb (3%) - seems OK on iView Player (I viewed the first couple of minutes, then skipped ahead a few times).
I really want to see this one - has anyone managed to download all of it?

Examining it with FireFox and FlashGot, it has a manifest f4m file and a series of segments.

Strange that the next day's The Business (8 August) is still amenable with rtmpdump.

gxdata

This is possibly/probably irrelevant to downloaders using rtmpdump.exe - unless some parameters need tweaking. I haven't explored that.

There have been some changes to iView servers that send the video stream down to us - particularly for those with unmetered ISPs - see iView Message Board, here (http://www2b.abc.net.au/tmb/Client/Message.aspx?b=98&m=27818&ps=50&dm=2)

According to that message, this will also affect devices and operating systems where the version of Adobe Flash Player (eg, installed into browser) is older.

For example, using PS3 devices to view iView shows through the Player website seems to cause the usually unmetered server to switch to a metered one.

I have discovered that for Windows, the latest Flash Player version is 11.8.800.94 (Internet Explorer, Opera, Firefox).
See here (https://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/) for the latest version for Chrome and Linux (etc).

Yes, every show has this behaviour - only since today. I believe that one of the URL links has changed. The config.xml has some changes, but so far I haven't found them helpful. Obviously we need to look deeper.
I have sent a PM to mce - he may be quicker at finding the problem.

From time to time the ABC makes updates to iview's video streaming platform to take advantage of new technology and standards. Most recently, changes were undertaken to make iview's streaming platform compatible with HDS, Adobe's new standard for video streaming.

It doesn't augur well, friends.

I'm getting an error message that is new, to me at least.

System.Collections.Generic.KeyNotFoundException: The given key was not present in the dictionary.

It brings up the index but if I go to a programme lower down the list than the 3rd the image sticks on ABC 24 and I get the above error message.

Any ideas?

Thanks

I'm currently checking out why ABC News 24 Live Stream JSON is being appended to nearly every series JSON data.

If you look at the two following examples, you will see what I mean.

http://tviview.abc.net.au/iview/api2/?series=1514053
http://tviview.abc.net.au/iview/api2/?series=81041448

Hope to have a fix soon.

Hi b-d-m- . . .
I was getting the same problem over the last couple of days, but I have just successfully downloaded a program (last night's edition of "By Any Means") so it appears to have fixed itself. :)
maybe it was a glitch at the ABC's end?
Cheers . . .

Welcome any thoughts.

The 32-bit version or the 64-bit version? While the 32-bit version should work OK on a 64-bit system, the opposite (ie. 64-bit version on a 32-bit system) is unlikely to be true. Just a thought.

No,
I'm now getting the Unhandled exception error continually.

I am not suggesting you are not getting that outcome. But I have just this minute successfuly downloaded tonight's episode of Australian Story, so I am suggesting the difficulty may be originating at your end.

Perhaps try deleting your present copies of the Napper and rtmpdump and re-downloading the latest version of the Napper (20140119) and rtmpdump (win32-2.3r557), just in case your copies have somehow been corrupted. I am assuming, of course, you are not trying to run the 64-bit version of the latter on a 32-bit system.

And, for both this and the previous reply, I am further assuming the use of the explicit "...-win32-..." in the recommended download implies there is also a "...-win64-..." version - if not, then I will pull in my head and bury it deep in sand!

God's richest blessings to all! :)

Using version 20140222 of iViewNapper and 2.3r557 of rtmpdump to download Rake ~280Mb file and rtmpdump crashes approximately every 20%. Unfortunately cannot provide errors as the window rtmpdump runs in closes immediately. Log file does not show any errors either.

Not too much of an issue just means I have to start the fetch 5 times to get the episode.:)

Thanks for your work.

On an older PVR, the downloaded file wouldn't play. Examining it with ffprobe showed an flv container format, despite the .mp4 file name extension. Changing the extension to .flv, then:
"[path to]\ffmpeg" -i %1 -vcodec copy -acodec copy "%~n1.mp4"
fixed it.

...ffprobe showed an flv container format, despite the .mp4 file name extension. Changing the extension to .flv, then: "[path to]\ffmpeg" -i %1 -vcodec copy -acodec copy "%~n1.mp4" fixed it.

Yep, iView uses the F4V file container with a mp4 extension (for god knows what reason), so a lot of older hardware chokes on it without remuxing it first, though you do not need to change the extension first.

Since its been a while, and all previous downloads links are dead, here is my way of dealing with remuxing files.[download from google drive]
Basically its 2 bat files, a Zeranoe FFmpeg build (http://ffmpeg.zeranoe.com/builds/) and a dos app called recycle.exe from MaDdoG software CmdUtils v1.5 (http://www.maddogsw.com/cmdutils/).

The bat files and FFmpeg are in the same folder as the files we want to remux, while recycle.exe is put in the windows => system32 directory.

To do a single file drag and drop it onto remux.bat, and it will do its thing, the bat file has some redundancies built in (which is why recycle.exe is used rather than windows inbuilt delete.exe) as in the past some iView files have had garbage data at the beginning that resulted in unplayable remuxes, so if the original file was gone you had to start from scratch, then fix the original file with a hex editor, then remux it, luckily this is extremely rare now.

remux.bat copies the streams to a new file [original filename]_PROCESSING.mp4, in case the process f's up during the remux so you know it wasn't successful, and can just delete the processing file and start again. If successful it then renames it to [original filename]_ReMux.mp4, so you can tell at a glance if the file has already been remuxed, then sends the original to the recycle bin so its retrievable if need be.
ffmpeg -i %1 -vcodec copy -acodec copy "%~n1_PROCESSING.mp4"
ren "%~n1_PROCESSING.mp4" "%~n1_ReMux.mp4"
recycle -f %1

feeder.bat is simply a for loop that sends all *.mp4 files through remux.bat, even previously remuxed ones.

Ah crap,

From what I can tell (with the help of Urlsnooper2 and wireshark), it appears the json is now being hosted at http://project.abc.net.au (on loading a gzip file identified as containing json is transferred from there) I got a 403 error trying to follow the url.

However the site itself seems to contain a lot of the directory within the source code of the channel, categories and programs A-Z pages, allowing you to branch off to each episode. Whether that would be usable for our purposes I'll leave to the coders to determine.

Hope this helps in some way.

That seems to just be the watchlists for individual users.

In the worst case, it looks like it is possible to scrape the details from the HTML, but that's WAY more of a hassle to parse (and problematic in terms of it breaking) than getting the JSON.

Probably the best thing would be to put wireshark into promiscuous mode and capture traffic from non-browser app, like a TV or Xbox.

blood.eaglz

I hope not, as that is the only JSON file I got during the entire trace, along with a bunch of javascript files from the same http://project.abc.net.au

/assets/js/iview-watchlist.js
/assets/js/iview-filter.js
/assets/js/webtrends.load.iview.js
/assets/js/iview-main.js
and a couple of javascript gzips
potentially missed some

Also tried promiscuous mode while using the android app, either I don't have wireshark setup properly or there is no json sent to the android app (possibly just uses the html).

Unfortunately this is not going to be as easy as when the v2 api came out, I only needed URLsnooper2 for that :)

Right, but I think that's all it is. The program list is contained within the HTML. That makes some sense, since they're no longer using flash for the rendering.

Also tried promiscuous mode while using the android app, either I don't have wireshark setup properly or there is no json sent to the android app (possibly just uses the html).

I'd imagine the JSON data is still available somehow for apps that don't spin up a whole browser. Whether Android is an example, I couldn't say.

Hi guys.

I'm in the same boat as you guys.

Been looking at wireshark captures and .js files and I cannot see any type of index like before.

The config.xml has changes with two new lines but nothing else there.

I haven't been over the iview site thoroughly but before they had a big window of shows, where now I don't think they do.

They maybe using this api: http://developer.tmsapi.com/docs/data_v1/ but customised.

Anything of use in the feeds (http://www.abc.net.au/tv/iview/feeds.htm)? They were full of broken links a couple of days ago. Now some are populated & others completely empty.

Been using FF webconsole...

I've been able to save a manifest & also download using AdobeHDS (via HDS Link Detector). Not sure if config.xml is being used. Seems like you need html+auth+manifest to get to the nitty gritty. Still experimenting. Haven't tried hdsdump yet tho'

Also not seeing expiry dates & times. Webpage is vague about this (which is annoying many users on the messageboard, who are also missing the Last Chance category!).

but is back up again (22/3/14).

Hi ^_^
I've just tried to get Louis Theroux Swingers episode & the black nationalism one, but both quit before downloading. the subtitle track downloads ok.
Episode 1 downloaded ok last week, and other shows are downloading ok now.
What could be wrong?

not sure if my edit worked...
but this was what i added
I have the latest version (22-02-2014) and it still does the same thing (rtmp window quits after a few seconds with nothing downloaded but the subtitles, even that only downloaded the 2nd time i tried it)
It actually downloaded the mp4 file of the black nationalism episode, but it's 0kb. The swingers one won't even download that.
(I was downloading 3 other shows, but I've never had this problem when downloading multiple shows before)
Hope you can help.

Oh, also, I tried it on the iview website & it seems to play ok, so for some reason the napper isn't napping)

hmm, it seems to have worked now O_O

I'm not sure what happened. Usually when I nap a program, it shows up right away in my iview folder, and i can refresh to see the file size gradually increasing. Seems like this time the file didn't show up? but it was still there downloading, so rtmp closed.
Is there any way to set rtmp to not close? would help in cases where it shows an error but it disappears too fast to read.

Las night I was having problems trying to download Four corners. Would crash & not download anything. I only noticed as I'd left iviewnapper on overnight to download the Four Corners ep & iviewnapper had closed (it stays open normally) (though today I noticed it had downloaded a 0kb .mp4 file before it crashed last night I guess)

Just tried latest one iviewnapper today & it crashed when loading with a null error. I tried the previous version & it has loaded ok.
It is downloading Four Corners as normal right now.

This might be related to my previous problem with Weird Weekends?

Something's changed that makes the latest iviewnapper not work like it did?

Ok, so it's not quite working as normal...it's on 39% & has had 3 ERROR: RTMP_ReadPAcket, failed to read RTMP packet header
then it tries to resume & does

Not ever seen that message before

Just for the non-Windows people out there, iViewNapper and SBSNapper do work on OS X (and I believe on Linux too) using WINE.

On OS X, it's easiest to use a WINE wrapper tool. One is Wineskin but, most recently, I have successfully used WineBottler. To run one of the Nappers, create a new wrapper; install .NET 3.5 (using WineTricks or the wrapper tool); then install the Napper software. The downloaded videos are saved into the same folder as the Napper executable (i.e. inside the wrapper). Both Nappers work well in that environment. The wrapper ends up around 800Mb in size but is complete with all the Windows support files and WINE bundle etc.

Cheers

It’s failing for me on newly added programs, i.e. tonight’s Media Watch but not last week’s.

Hi
Looks like ABC Iview has just changed to Streaming and Fragments.
I downloaded so many fragments and renamed to MP4 on the first frag and nothing.

Anyone else notice how Iview has changed?

Looks as though a either a newtwork problem or they were testing, in either case I can use IVIew Napper

I have a couple of off-topic matters that someone might help me with (please)..

#1: The captions for latest Lateline are a bit off. Is there a tool that allows some sort of interactive tweaking of a download in the 'Napper format?
#2: I want to snip out just a portion of that show (10m35s to 34m50s), and my attempt with VLC Media Player was pretty poor (start time can be set, couldn't see how to set an end time; and the sound and video streams were out of sync and seemed to have a speed problem). So, a more capable - and free - tool is what I would like.

Suggestions?

[edit] #2 - Well, AVIDemux v2.6.8.9026 was successful in Copy mode for both audio and video, just setting start and end. If there was any option to edit caption files, I just ignored that.

Try HandBrake at handbrake.fr
It allows start and end times for desired clip.

I've noticed that 'Bowling for Columbine' is not fetched by napper. Is it because iView is running it as a different filetype or streaming mode?

All ok! iView has now uploaded it. :)
