I reported this about 2 months ago, twice (politely) but had no response.

iViewRipper v2.31 (and v2.2 is the same) isn't getting much of the catalog - 496 shows (usually it is in the 2,000+ range - can't recall offhand).

So, the iView downloader is effectively broken. The latest version is very slow to load data (catalog) but is no more effective than the July version, v2.2

I haven't tried IDM or other downloaders - does anyone here have suggestions?

IDM works well in the ABC iview site just remember to place a program name in the idm program name other wise your get a generic name "never miss a program "it will of course be a flash file convert it to mp4 using the converter the I placed in the SBS iviewer some time ago

This discussion originally started on whirlpool, but the threads were terminated after the ABC enabled RTMPE encryption, and we changed to rtmpdump with decryption, since we were then bypassing protection rather than capturing the stream, they got the threads removed (parts 2+, part 1 (https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1212283) is still archived as we were using straight stream capturing at that time).

As we haven't managed to get pass sbs protection yet, and as such are only getting stuff they haven't bothered protecting, they haven't targeted the whirlpool threads. the instant we manage it, they'll be taken down as well.

Yes, it looks good.

But I've had the ffmpeg child processes stall a lot, and it's a several-step operation in Task Manager to kill 'Ripper and ffmpeg, and necessary to close down iViewRipper once that is done.
I have more than a dozen .TS files as remnants, some shows seem to have failed more than once.
Has anyone had this experience too?

I won't be a big help.
I mainly use iView as 'Catch Up' for something I missed; as intended.
SBS is slightly different.. I'm often too slow to realize what I'm missing.

Try the latest 32 bit build of ffmpeg.exe and see if that helps.

New on 'Ripper v2.4.1 is a button called [UPDATE] - which serves as some sort of messaging from M3M1E (author).

What's the purpose of the link to a 32-bit version of ffmpeg? Doesn't 'Ripper install the version it needs to use, in the Programs folder on your/my computer, for its own use?

On my computer, it is a file with date 31/12/2015 8:21PM, ffmpeg version N-77556-g4160900

My understanding is that iviewripper was packaged with the 64bit version only. The new 2.42 beta now has both.

It makes sense to me to also keep updating ffmpeg.

Yes, there are some really nice features that it's possible have gone un-noticed - I have attached an image of the pictures shown in iViewRipper v2.4.2 BETA - which have an active zone in each of the corners:
top L: download the image associated with this show
top R: activates your browser, and goes to the web page at iView for this show
bottom L: the S indicates that sub-titles (captions) are available, and can be downloaded
bottom R: the ? gives "metadata" about the show - size, duration, expiry date, etc

If you care to use the Save Database button, the .DB file can be loaded at some later time. This can be useful to see/save the Description, even after the show has expired. If the show has expired, a warning message pops up indicating that this video may not be available to download (sometimes, it is still about after the expiry date). Of course, the Description and the image are.

However, there are still some glitches (apart from occasional iView mis-naming of show titles, and image-video mis-matching); the awkward one is that ffmpeg stalls fairly often (and I have put recent versions in place). That's most likely out of the control of 'Ripper, though.

If I have time, I may put together a PDF file with images that shows some of these features. I've described just a couple here.

Not to say that I would like a few additional aids - which are fairly easy to code.

hey guys, things are good with iviewripper, only have the odd hiccup of it saying unable to download for some reason. But i just now got this error on a show i'd tried last week to download. Create Origami. I downloaded all but 2 episodes ok, Pigeon & Rabbit. They come up with this error when I click on them

(I think last week it just said unable to download?)
I click continue & can continue using iviewripper no problem.
Using version 2.41, not sure if this has been fixed in 2.42

v2.43 BETA has been available a while - since 3Oct2016. Also, may be worth installing a later .NET version? v4.5 ?

Actually, I have a lot of problems with faulty iView programs (not 'Ripper faults; and mainly News-type). And have found that when I get the type of .NET error you are seeing, I close 'Ripper, and load it again. Try that.
Also, ffmpeg doesn't like to resume (rtmpdump was very tolerant of internet flakiness).

The "Stopped working" error in my experience is reasonably common - I haven't tracked down a definitive cause.
Ignore the size of the file that you see when it is downloading (the pop-out thing with moving text, red Cancel button); it doesn't matter.
Downloading 2 at once isn't a problem (unless you have a slow internet connection*).
The process is that .TS files are downloaded, then converted to .MP4 - if there is a failure (ie, you CANCEL some download, or there is some other failure), it is best that you DELETE those remnant .TS files, if you see them.
Worse, if there is a successful download, with a .MP4 file formed, and you forget and download the same show again, at the REMUXING stage it will "hang" because doesn't know that it should delete the existing .MP4 file (or, just quit, and delete the .TS file). That is out of your control.
I haven't tested if I have any problems with the shows you mention. Some can be faulty, and you can test that by going to iView - the show's "image" in 'Ripper has a W in top RH corner, click it.
If you get a black "Ooops!" message, there is a problem at the iView site.

* have you tested your internet download speed? OzSpeedtest.com is a good place.

i've noticed it has prblems when downloading a show i'ev already downloaded

we got NBN a month or so ago, the speed is crazy fast O_O (like, 1gb movie downloads in 20-30min, instead of hours as before)
some of these small 5-10 min shows are downloaded in seconds

just a follow up to my last post...
I was trying to download Kevin Mcloud's Man Made Home Ep 1 & 2. Ep 1 worked fine, Ep 2 didnt, saying in the download box 404 not found error. I decided to check on iview, as if it was the reverse, i'd just assume ep 1 wasn't there anymore as it had expired, but it would be very unusual for ep 1 to be available after ep 2.
So i checked on iview - both Ep 1 & Ep 2 play fine.
So what could be causing Ep 2 to fail with 404 error?

iviewripper was working fine, (apart from previous problem) but after running a virus & malware scan it's saying
c:\program files etc\iviewripper.exe
A device attached to the system is not functioning.

How can i find out what's wrong? do i just reinstall iviewripper?

Because a malware program raises a flag it does not mean anything is wrong with the ripper. iviewripper.exe is NOT a device attached to to the system, it's a program.

I'd ignore the scan results. Or try another antivirus/malware program.
I consistently get false positives on the 'CDex.exe' and 'WinArchiver3.exe' installers, both of which I've used for years.

i reinstalled iviewripper & it still comes up with the same error. It seems a windows error & not an a/v program popping up. i'll have to check the log of what was changed or removed. I remember it flagging imgburn as dodgy & it isnt. so i must've missed the iview one

i initially scanned my computer as the USB was playing up (wouldn't recognise sticks or a portable drive)

now i decided to look up the error "a device attached to the system is not functioning"& found this

I used 3 programs, Windows Defender, Malwarebytes Antimalware & Combofix.
MBAM detected & removed a heap of files from AskPartnerNetwork toolbar & a couple of registry keys for 'Teoma' - nothing seeming to be related to iviewripper.

Windows Defender only detected 2 trojans on the external HDD & removed them

Combofix did a heap of stuff - combofix log doesn't show anything to do with iviewripper (at least nothing shows when searching iview.) what other programs or dlls are used by iviewripper?

@Palewing, where do you download shows to, from iView?

If it is the external USB-connected HDD then that will be a problem.

In any case, I would disconnected the external HDD and do a scan of your entire system, preferably a thorough rather than Quick, using Windows Defender. Make sure Defender has updated its data files first.

Windows Defender is my anti-malware software of choice for the last 3+ years (Windows 7, 8.1, 10). I long ago abandoned McAfee and Norton, and used AVG free for about 3 years before switching to Windows Defender.
Microsoft has been too nice to the anti-malware companies for about 10 years.

Once you have your main drives free of malware, it may be a good idea to do a system check using SFC. More about that later, if needed.

Hi folks,
I'm finding Iviewripper is becoming increasingly unhappy. It usually loads up ok & d/ls the index but only allows you to view the details of a few programs before crashing. It also crashes when you try to d/l a program, but after reloading one can download a program .. but crashes again if you tray a 2nd. A very painful & slow process. Someone noted this on the Sbsripper forum, but no details nor a fix. Anyone have an idea? I have 2.42, which is the latest version AFAIK, running on win7pro-64.

Just a followup ... I d/l the latest ffmpeg build (nightly, static, 27 Dec 2016), extracted out ffmpeg.exe, re-named it ffmpeg_64bit.exe & replaced the version in the iviewripper program folder & not only did that fix the stability problems but it also sped up the dls. Since iviewripper uses it's own specially named copy of ffmpeg in the iviewripper program folder, that's the one you need to update for iviewripper.

@Palewing, where do you download shows to, from iView?

just to the Downloads directory on the main drive. It's working fine now, other than the occasional problem 'unable to download for some reason'
yet sometimes, these shows show that error & 5 minutes later, they download fine? Sometimes it's when i'm downloading 5 or 6 shows already, which I took the error to mean that it's too many shows downloading at once. I love the schedule function, wish SBS ripper had it.

(only posted previous posts because iviewripper was the first time i saw the error - when i saw it happeneing to lots of others, i looked elsewhere for info. turns out turning the computer off & on again fixed it O_o)


Are there any plans to get the HD channels ABC is launching soon? (or maybe already launched)

Suddenly this month the Sony xml data feed has stopped working--attempts to view/download now return a 403 Forbidden error.

I've favoured this feed as it was complete and included plain-text mp4 urls. (I still prefer using command line/batch downloads as I have more control over where and when these download!)

Does anyone know how to get around this error? Do I need some sort of auth key or data now? Has there been a corresponding change to Sony tv apps to deal with this change?

Iviewripper's working for for me .. just tested it a few minutes ago. I've got the latest version, 2.51. On the other hand, the latest sbsriper is not working for me but is working for others .. go figure.

Here is a Beta release of an update of SBSripper that was under test just before M3M1E went off-line. I have waited a reasonable time to see if he came back on-line or responded to emails – no replies, so i'm putting this out there "as-is" with no implication that I'm providing any support to it. This is probably the last gasp for this package so we are fortunate that others in the Whirlpool community have picked up the baton, and I encourage Ripper users to make the transition to these new and exciting offerings which have the potential to serve us well for a good while into the future.

A pity about Whirlpool. I have been away several days, did see the link to iViewViewer (?) but on going one page forward all the ABC posts had been retrospectively deleted.

Whirlpool seems to have given users a 'christmas' present. The moderators clamped down and removed iview references & issued threats late christmas day or early boxing day. Several programmers there came up with fixes for the iview downloaders .. basically most of them are built around youtube-dl which is currently broken. An unofficial patch was created but after the moderator threats on whirlpool the author has withdrawn the patch and asked that those who have it not pass it around. :( Other programmers who came up with fixes will hopefully migrate elsewhere .. hopefully some will come here. In defense of whirlpool, they are based in Australia and so easily threatened, and they in turn have to pass on those threats to the users.
The latest official youtube-dl (23rd dec) is still broken for iview. Some of the iview fixes were posted externally from whirlpool, but all the iview posts have been removed from the whirlpool sbs forum. One of the SBS downloaders (SBS-YT) will also work, more or less, with iview urls, although there may be issues with the downloaded file names. I find it really strange the behaviour of some on WP in relation to the unfounded threats from the mods.

When I was doing iViewNapper, I never once received any threats from ABC, the only thing was Internode threatened to kick me off their personal web space and I created nappers.net in response to that.

So we have seen a lot of overreactions, but life goes on and if I could be bothered I'd just compile a version of dl-yt with the changes myself but just cannot be bothered.

Anyway, I grabbed a version of ryleys modified exe, so if I need to, I'll use that.

For Apple Mac users looking to download iView shows, I have written a basic AppleScript applet. As with other apps, it uses youtube-dl and FFmpeg and so works on any site youtube-dl handles. It's called MacYTDL.

To use, download the dmg file, open it, read the Help file and save the applet in a favourite place (eg. Applications). It will download and install youtube-dl, FFmpeg and FFprobe as needed. Those components can be updated from within the applet (except MacYTDL at present). It can uninstall itself. Works basically the same way as other apps => just paste a URL into the box and click on "Download".

Has options for downloading subtitles (always in SRT format at present - embedded if desired), file description, file format, download location, overwriting downloads and verbose feedback from youtube-dl.

The AppleScript code is not hidden. So, any keen scripters out there are welcome to improve, change and beautify MacYTDL. Just make sure to send me all the details.

MacYTDL is a youtube-dl GUI front end for Apple Macs running macOS 10.10 or later. Written in AppleScript the code is not protected and can be opened in Script Editor.

Hey all..

So, from what I can see ABC iView has finally dumped any and all requirement for flash, which is great, and are now using HTML5, they rolled out a new website and iOS apps, but the video is now encrypted!
I grabbed the latest build from ytdl and though I noticed a comment from @GBDesk about a recent commit done by one of the devs, has anyone been able to decrypt the video - I can use a couple of other downloading tools to grab the mp4 files, but if it's encrypted, its useless. Any suggestions please or are we in waiting mode for ytdl to release a new build? Thanks in advance.

That still leaves the workable url/program ID issue.

Version 2018.06.14 has been released. I've just DL'd last night's 4Corners with no problems. Ditto Episode 4 of City&TheCity.

The trick for getting URLs of individual videos is to click on the down arrow beside an episode then click on "Share". That will copy the link which can then be pasted into youtube-dl.

But, the new site makes a mess of apps which try to pull the URL from the page address. That no longer works as each page is just a holder for all the episodes.

Be kind to the YTDL people – they have responded very quickly and precisely to the iView change [maybe they saw how many Oz users love their ABC iView !].

That still leaves the workable url/program ID issue.

To programmatically get the URL might mean parsing the html for the links. With some work (or a lot) that would result in a list of episodes and URLs from each show page. For example, this web page: "https://iview.abc.net.au/show/city-and-the-city" has six "shareUrl" references: one for the page, one for latest episode and one for each of the four available episodes.

Yes, discovered this from playing around with the new page - but thanks for the heads up - if you are grabbing a weekly program, I grab the first url, and you'll notice that only two numbers of the url change to identify the episode number from week to week - I wont mention too much since big brother is watching, but anyone with 5 minutes and half a brain can grab a few links from the same show and they will quickly see what I'm talking about.

Of course, these guys are my heroes - since they have given me a way of grabbing iView stuff to keep - and even though 1024x576 is still not the best possible resolution, it's a lot better than what we had previously which was around 360p.

Using a rather long command string I found on another site, I am able to get the show's metadata, a thumbnail and the .vtt subtitles (which alas don't convert into proper .srt using the "--convert-subs srt" but its relatively easy to find a converter which will number each line to make it .srt compliant. I also convert the .mp4 into a .mkv for ease of use in the future. Though it definitely needs a remux to make into a proper .mkv because the source video is downloaded in individual chunks - but that's another issue entirely, one that I already understand, and not specifically relevant to this current discussion.

I get that driving ytdl from a command prompt might be a little complicated for some people, but until someone creates a Windows front end with the ability to turn on/off each option, enabling the various options on the command line is a reliable way to get consistent results week to week - of course, if you don't want subtitles, metadata, thumbnails and conversion to mkv, the command line gets much simplier ;-P

If the URL is correct, it works in MacYTDL (which uses fairly vanilla youtube-dl calls). The URLs look like this:

iview.abc.net.au/show/mystery-road/series/1/video/DR1631W001S00 (https://iview.abc.net.au/show/mystery-road/series/1/video/DR1631W001S00)

But, note that this formulation also works with youtube-dl: https://iview.abc.net.au/video/ZW1506A001S00 ... but, neither work in a web browser.

Perhaps there is an issue with URLDown Dropper – but, development has ceased. There are many alternative Windows apps which use youtube-dl. There are also some cross-platform efforts which are functional and free (eg. youtube-dl-gui (https://github.com/MrS0m30n3/youtube-dl-gui)).

I just tried the SBSDL -V4.2 updated to the latest utube-dl and I can download the ABC programs back-in-time-for-dinner copy and paste the link into getvideo in the program and it starts up ok DECRYPTED 650MB and the srt file present

I was thinking I might get a frame with the JW player showing that video but instead I get just the show's main page. Not a big issue. It does work with youtube-dl which, in part, reports:

Has anyone else noticed that iview has stopped working with yt-dl (and dependent applications) in the past few days? It was working Monday but not today. I tried several shows .. and they all give the same "is not a valid url" error.

Pcspeak's latest script to "get list" is only getting eps up until the end of last week. Nothing newer is showing, but they are up on the website. Url's for eps this week taken from the website give the not valid error. Have the latest version of yt-dl.

I notice there's a moderator-deleted post on the SBS forum on monday, which is probably someone asking the same thing there.

Using pcspeak's latest ABC script, selecting an old ep from a previous week and changing the episode number in the program ID works (making an educated guess as to what it is). Messy tho' and it does rename the file to the older episode (I didn't try changing that .. one variable at a time). No idea why this workaround works when yt-dl itself does not work, but then I know zilch of coding so no idea what the abc script is doing differently that allows it to work.

Update: I'm now having mixed success throwing guessed url's for this week at naked yt-dl. But it's very slow. School holidays?

Since this forum is back up again and seems fairly stable, I suppose it's time to post an update on how to use downloaders with iview.

First a legal disclaimer - using downloaders on streaming sites is a legal grey area, so this primer should not be taken as a licence. :) However in some jurisdictions it is deemed the equivalent of using a VCR/DVR, so not prosecuted. Also, some businesses have licences which legally allow employees to record or download broadcast media for, ahem, work or research purposes. Hence downloaders themselves are not illegal. End disclaimer.

Apart from some commercial downloaders, today pretty much all downloaders are based on youtube-dl. If you are happy using the command prompt, go to "https://youtube-dl.org/", d/l the version for your os and off you go.

For those who prefer a GUI, see the previous post for a GUI for apple computers. For windows there were several GUIs, but they have now been abandoned and for the most part removed from the web. A series of scripts is still available for SBS from mega.nz, here's a tiny url: "https://tinyurl.com/y8h582e2". The download script works for many streaming sites including iview. You will however need to update youtube-dl. Once you've uncompressed the zip file, go to the created folder and in the sub-folder "bin" run the script "youtube-dl_update" - the copy of youtube-dl packaged with the script is out of date. Whilst these scripts operate in a dos/command shell, you run them from the windows folder, so they are easier to use.

Whether you use native youtube-dl or a front end, you need one additional item and that's the url of the video itself (not the url of the iview webpage describing the show, the two are different). Go to the iview website, then to the page of the show you would like and click on the "share" button and then "copy link". Paste this in when prompted with the frontend or use it as the command line argument with youtube-dl, then sit back and wait. Downloaded files will need to be renamed since they will not include the name of the show, just the series & episode numbers.

The above means of getting a url will work for series, but does not work for one-off programs. There is a workaround, but it is a bit more complicated. Go to the iview web page for the show, right click on the screenshot and select "save image as" and you'll get something like "ZW1435A001S00_598aa96ecff76_1280.jpg" in the "save as" popup. The part before the "_" is the program id code. Paste this into: "<iview web page url>/series/0/video/<id code>". The "web page url" here is the url for the iview page describing the show (not the video link url). Use notepad to assemble the video link and copy & paste that into the frontend or youtube-dl, as above. You should get something like: "https://iview.abc.net.au/show/royal-edinburgh-military-tattoo-2017/series/0/video/ZW1435A001S00".

I use the SBS downloader V9 for all my ABC Iview downloads works well no problems I make a new folder copy the txt description for the programs and the downloaded files usually a video and srt to the folders to keep it all tidy

Just go to the page of the show you want, select the desired series and you will get a row of the available episodes with a screenshot and a brief description below. < & > just above the right-most episode on the screen navigates to other episodes.

Right click on the screenshot for the ep you want & copy the link. For Dr Who 5.1, that's:

Then toss that at pcspeak's downloader script, youtube-dl or whatever other method you prefer. I just tried the above url and it worked.

One-off specials & movies are more difficult. The instructions I gave in this forum back in December still mostly work apart from the first step in getting the program ID. Now you need to right click on the background and select "view page source", "view page info" (for firefox) or whatever options your browser gives. Hunt through the resulting tab and look for the url of the background image, snip out the ID which is part of the background image filename and follow the rest of the instructions I posted back in Dec last year a few posts above.

Not an iview question, but since this forum is not moderated & I have nowhere else to ask, here will have to do.

Has anyone else noticed that 10Play has broken youtube-dl again in the past week or so? Not just newly posted eps are failing but even older ones that previously worked are now failing to download. If you can get anything, it's a blank 3s video file. Videodownload helper also falls over.

I've tried with the latest yt-dl and on both win7 & win10 machines have the same result.
