Question

WM Recorder Stops and Starts over

Hi,

I am wondering why when I try to stream any video on this page:
Code:
http://video.google.com/videosearch?q=CHARLIE+ROSE&hl=en
The stream starts, I am recording in WM Recorder I get anywhere from 5 to 80 percent through the @ 80 Mb video. And the video (according to the Recording window) is "cancelled" (I see this for about one minute).

Then there is a countdown and the video is recorded from the beginning again.

It may do this 9 times, and I never do get the complete video.

My connection is @ 300 - 500 kbps.

If I do not use the recorder and try to watch the video it of course will pause while it buffers. But..... similar to what the WM Recorder sees if it is the only target for the stream, the video stops (freezes),
the pause button is still shown (I am still in the play mode).

It would stay frozen forever, but I have found that I can click and drag the seek slider a bit forward and then the play button shows again... If I click the play button the video starts again from that point.

Is Google streaming the video in some new way?
I never had this trouble before.

Why does WMRecorder "loose" the stream and have to start over?

This stream is a flash video stream.

Can someone help?

Thanks

Re: WM Recorder Stops and Starts over

I just recorded a 147 Mb .flv video from Google with WM Recorder 12.0 in the ADA mode. I had no any problem. I just did the following:
  1. Started WM Recorder. Switched to the ADA Auto recording mode .
  2. Opened my Firefox and navigated to the google video.
  3. Played the video in the embedded flash player.
  4. As soon as WM Recorder started recording the video, I stopped playing it in the embedded player.
What version of WM Recorder do you have?

Do you know that there are lots of other ways to record HTTP flash .FLV videos? One of them is by using freeware Miro.

Re: WM Recorder Stops and Starts over

Thank you for the response. I am using WM Recorder 11.2. I had the same problems with 12 (where I began to notice problems so I uninstalled and re-installed).

I am using Windows XP Media Center 2005 (virtually the same as XP). I am using the ADA mode and Auto recording. I use I.E. 7 (with up to date updates). All current service packs on XP, .net Frameworks all except 3.5 which seems to give me trouble.

My "broadband" connection is inconsistently fast. So on average the speed is insufficient for constant stream play (this is why I use the recorder). Of course I will start and stop play in the embedded player. I suspect higher speed broadband connections that experience no pause to buffer would not "see" my problem.

I do not know if WM Recorder is at fault. This is why. If I do not run WM Recorder, and simply play the video using the embedded player it will pause and buffer fine to random points in the video time line..... THEN the video will appear to pause as usual and it will never begin play again. [The funny thing here is I found that if I clicked and dragged the Seek slider a bit forward the play button would fome in focus and I could click it and the video would play from that point.]

Now if I were playing in the player and recording the stream at the same time (speed drops as is known so I don't do) this is where I would read "cancelled" and in the recording window see the countup to 100 then a Reconnect and the WMR recording from the url from the start with a filename indexed by 1.

My internet connection never fails, during any of this and the link to webpage is active (I am not "offline" according to IE7).

Thanks for any suggestions. Though I am afraid to re-create my situatiom, you would have to have a connection that paused the stream regularly.

I had this problem in a small way before where 1 out of 5 videos might have a restart or two before a complete file (indexed name) would be shown as complete.

Now though after 10 reconnects I am luck to get one complete file "trying" for five different videos! Something has changed.

Thanks in advance for your help and interest.

Re: WM Recorder Stops and Starts over

I've tried to record from google video and to use uTorrent with 5 downloads and I had no any problem with WM Recorder.

Then I tried to record 2 videos from google video, play one of them and use 5 downloads in uTorrent. Choky video in the embedded player stopped on a third minute, but WM Recorder downloaded 100% of both videos.

Do you download videos from vp.video.google.com or video.google.com ?

Re: WM Recorder Stops and Starts over

Well I am not sure, it is a video on this page:

Code:
http://video.google.com/videosearch?q=CHARLIE+ROSE&hl=en
Pick any video they do the same for me.

I suspect the site looses the "receiver" with a "slower than stream play" (by a certain amount).

Yesterday my wireless speed was good and better than 450 kbps on the average, WM Recorder got the 110 Mb video (the 56 min video on my page). I recorded it twice in a row and it got the video each time without starting over.

I know recently Adobe updated the flash player. Could there be a difference do to this?
I know I used to get video from this video area of Charlie Rose a month ago just fine on "bad speed" days of @ 200 kbps.

To me WM Recorder should be able to get the file at slower internet speeds (without the player receiving a stream at the same time).

I have written google to see if they are doing anything different. They have not written back.

Thanks, Ed

In my previous experiment I downloaded interviews of charlie rose from google video.

Click on the status button of WM Recorder to see what streams are recorded.

You can also grab the stream URLs from the text file urlswmr.txt which resides in the same folder as your WMR.

My connection is not very fast... Dunno whether I was recording slower than in real time or not.

Try the following:
  1. Click the "Settings" button
  2. Check "Reconnect forever"
  3. Click the "Apply" button, click the "OK" button.
It seems to me that this feature is meant to be used for different things, but I don't really understand what could possibly cause your problem.

I suggest you to try to download with a free download manager that has a log, for example "Free download manager". The only way to understand how to solve your problem is by analyzing logs. The stream URL can be found with WMR or any stream URL Finder.

Unlike Windows Media and Real streams, I don't really know how WMR records flash http streams in different modes and whether its recording ability depends on the flash player installed on your PC or not.

You can try a different version of adobe flash player. You can also try to record with WMR in the PRO and URL modes. Usually when one have problem with the ADA mode, the PRO one should be used, however it seems to be a rule of thumb for Windows Media and Real streams.
