WM Splitter cannot render audio stream (AC3)

I'm using XP ServicePack 3 . When I try loading a large *.avi file into WM Splitter , the picture looks and plays fine . But there is no audio . A message pops up " Cannot render Audio (AC3) " .... now what ?

Aha ! .... downloaded a bunch of *.avi codecs , and that solved it .
