Can't play legal DRM-protected WMA files on Microsoft Zune? Remove copy-protection!

Figured I should post this, just in case it helps someone... Anyone...

There's a file in the folder referenced below named "v3ks.bla". I copied that to the expected file named "drmv2.lic". Then I re-ran the freeme2 command line. It prompted me for the SID for that file. I wasn't sure if that's expected or not, but I entered the SID in the drm2.key file that drmdbg created. Freeme2 then started doing its thing - 98617 packets of length 16000. Didn't take long. At the end it gave an error - "Unknown packet id...", so I thought it failed and quit thinking about it for a while.

But when I brought up my Zune software, it found the created "Freed-..." file and was able to play it. It ignored the original file altogether, and if I manually tried to play it, it said it didn't support the file (or some such). I'm sync'ing to the Zune now - looks like it might be converting the format, as it's going pretty slow; but I'm pretty excited to see if this works.

I picked that v3ks.bla file by using Process Monitor (www.sysinternals.com) to see what files were accessed when I loaded and started the movie in WMP. When I saw it hit that file, I opened it. It was in an xml format, which is what it seemed like freeme2 was expecting based on the source code. Maybe I was just lucky, but so far so good...

In case anyone cares, the file is a .wmv of the Live Free or Die Hard movie. It comes on a second dvd in the special edition version, and it's already on that dvd (from "Fox Digital Media"). There's a ####-####-####-#### serial number in the packaging, and when you load that dvd, it starts some software that lets you copy the file off the dvd. It's targeted at plays4sure, but I wanted to see it on my new zune 80gb.

Cool stuff!

Donnie

The issue mentioned here where there is no "drmv2.lic" file in the registry-specified location ("C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\DRM" on Vista) is, I believe, causing the issue mentioned over on doom9, "Couldn't allocate space for license file!".

Because the file doesn't exist, the fseek / ftell calls that figure out how much space to allocate are probably returning -1, which when viewed as an unsigned int is 2^32 (4GB). That memory allocation will obviously fail. Should probably check if the file exists before opening and seeking.

What I don't know nearly enough to answer is why an expected "drmv2.lic" file isn't in that directory. There *is* a drmv1.lic file. Don't know what that means. [EDIT] There is a "drmv1.key" file in that folder. There are *no* .lic files in there at all.

FWIW...

M$'s own player Zune should support play4sure... so there is no much sense to remove DRM protection from Windows Media files just to play them on M$ Zune player.

It should, but it doesn't. That's been one of the big controversies, or at least issues, with the release of the Zune - that the latest MS media software doesn't support their own DRM scheme.

I'm running Vista Ultimate with the very latest WMP as well as the Zune software, both on the same PC. After I use the serial # to copy the playsforsure-protected .wmv off the DVD, I play it in WMP no problem. However, the Zune software doesn't auto-recognize it. So I manually try to play the video using the Zune software, but it specifically says it doesn't support the "online store" from which the video was obtained.

If it had supported it, I wouldn't have spent 5-6 hours figuring out how to strip the DRM from it.

That's really weird... but I can expect such kind of things from M$.

Zune 2.5 .. anyone have DRM removal working?

I'm pretty sure all/most of the recent reports of mirakagi failing are due to updates released in Zune 2.5. Does anyone have DRM removal working (in a VM or otherwise) AFTER installing Zune 2.5? If so, how and which DRM removal tools are you using?

This is typically the error you'd get if you install Zune 2.5 ....

Mirakagi starts, code version 0.9
Found 0 keys in keyring.

It is finished.

Re: Zune 2.5 .. anyone have DRM removal working?

i have tried using Virtual Pc with a clean xp sp2 using wmp10, i applied windows installer 3.1 upgrade (necessary to setup zune 2.5 and with windows update disabled) and used the zune 2.5 setup from the net. then i disconnected the internet and tried to install zune 2.5 and a message appeared saying "an internet connection is required to complete setup"... then i connected to the internet and the setup program downloaded some updates from the net and installed, then checked and got a non-working mirakagi...

it seems M$ is winning

Re: Zune 2.5 .. anyone have DRM removal working?

I previously had the FairUse4WM fix-2 working on my desktop computer. But after doing a Windows XP Professional reinstall and a downloaded install of the Zune software, the same program that I once used no longer works for me.

I do have another desktop computer that has had an update from the original Zune software to the newest version which continues to work.

I have not tried it yet but can you install the original Zune software either off of the original disc or though an outdated download and still have the FairUse4WM work? Then potentially any updates after will still allow for the FairUse4WM to continue to work.

Any thoughts?

i'll check that out using virtual pc, and i'll let you know.

i installed and downloaded the zune 2.5 from the net to install in an outdated install of XP, and it updated everything automatically., and fairuse didn't work.

gab0, I went through the exact same process as you and had the exact same results. I've been asking around in some other threads if there is any other way to acquire the licenses besides installing zune and playing the file in zune. No responses yet. I hope someone cracks this soon.

i think it would be better to wait until the zune 3.0 is released (next week) to see what happens with the new software...
