How to run Internet Explorer (I.E.) on Ubuntu 9.10

You will need Wine, cabextract and ies4linux.

How to run Internet Explorer (I.E.) in Ubuntu 9.10
  1. Install Wine and cabextract. In Terminal run:
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install wine cabextract
  2. Download and unpack ies4linux:
    Code:
    wget http://www.tatanka.com.br/ies4linux/downloads/ies4linux-latest.tar.gz
    tar zxvf ies4linux-latest.tar.gz
    cd ies4linux-*
  3. Run IE4Linux setup:
    Code:
    ./ies4linux
Why do you need Internet Explorer (I.E.) on Linux
  • To open web-pages that requires I.E.
  • To open web-pages with Flash 9
  • To test web-pages (for web-desidners)
Please note that ies4linux allows to install Internet Explorer 5 or 6. I.E. 7 support is only in beta stage.

I installed I.E. 6 in Ubuntu 9.10. To run it I just used the following command in the Terminal
Code:
ie6
Troubleshooting
If you have problems when running Internet Explorer, make sure you use the latest version (right now it is 2.99.0.1).

If you get a blank Windows when running Internet Explorer, you can use nogui option when installing:
Code:
./ies4linux –no-gui

Re: How to run Internet Explorer (I.E.) on Ubuntu 9.10

I.E. 6 is too old. It is possible to install I.E. 7 onto Linux with Wine, although it doesn't work perfectly.

I suggest you to install other browsers for Windows:
How to run Firefox for Windows on Linux with Wine
How to run Opera 10 for Windows on Linux (like Ubuntu 9.10) with Wine

Please note that you can use Firefox and Opera for Linux as well.
