Second, I found the instructions a little bit hard to follow. So I wanna make it easier for the next person. It was also hard enough to find this method. I've been searching for hours and looking for a simple program to do this.

I will rewrite the steps and even include all the files I used. I'm on windows 7, 64 bit. However the file versions I used were 32 bit versions because I saw someone in this thread say to use those instead.
  1. All the files you need will be in the zip I'm about to link you to. Download this zip file:
    Code:
    http://rapidshare.com/files/434887428/for_stupid_digital_protection.zip
  2. Install python by running python 2.71.msi (originally found @ http://www.python.org/download/)
  3. Run 'pycrypto-2.1.0.win32-py2.7.exe' (I had problems running the regular python files, so i downloaded the windows binary file for python 2.7 @ http://www.voidspace.org.uk/python/m...shtml#pycrypto )
  4. Find where your digital files are stored, in my case it was a pdf and it was saved in "C:\Users\ *YOUR_USER_NAME* \Documents\My Digital Editions" where *YOUR_USER_NAME* is the name of the admin account of your computer.
  5. Extract 'ineptepub.pyw', 'ineptkey.pyw' and 'ineptpdf74.pyw' into the directory from step 4.
  6. Run 'ineptkey.pyw'. It will find the key and write it to hard disk as "ADEPTKEY.DER " in the same directory.
  7. Since my file was a pdf, I ran the file 'ineptpdf74.pyw'. A popup will come up, now for the 'input file' find the pdf file (should be in the step 4 directory).
  8. Output file give it a name + a pdf extension, for example file.pdf
  9. And wa-la that's it. Hope that made it easier for you.

Some questions,

#1 Should I make this into a youtube tutorial and will there be any problems with doing it?

#2 If I distribute the new pdf file, will there be anything that can be traced back to me?

Anyway I'm so glad I don't have to use adobe digital edition.

Hi everybody! My son has an Adobe Digital Editions text book that he wants to read on his Kindle, so I've followed the above instructions, and everything works as it should until I hit the Decrypt button at which point I get the error message "Error decrypting book session key." Any suggestions?

where am i stuck:
1: I have my adeptkey. but nothing happens when I run the 7.0 version of ineptpdf.pyw file.
2: I checked I have python 2.5 under library folder. I installed python 2.6 but then removed it based on the other blog (viva eblog)

Hopefully you're sorted by now, but if not, go to my blog and download DeDRM 1.8. This now includes ineptpdf, so you need to do nothing except drag & drop the PDF onto the script. It will find your Adobe Digital Editions key info autmatically and decrypt the PDF.

Re: Remove DRM from PDF ebooks (Adobe Digital Editions)

Can someone please help me? I am trying to remove the DRM from a PDF book so I can read it on my Kindle.

I have followed the directions in this thread, and have had no luck.

I'm using:
Python 26
Pycrypto 2.1
ineptkey.pyw to generate adeptkey.der
tried several versions of ineptpdf.pyw
Adobe Digital Editions
Windows Vista

Every time, I get the same error message -- Error: Dict Required: 2288

I've been completely successful following the directions for removing DRM from epub books, but am apparently doing something wrong with the pdf attempt.

Thank you.

Question

Re: Remove DRM from PDF ebooks (Adobe Digital Editions)

Hello, and thanks for everyone's hard work!

Here's my situation: I have a PDF file of a book or general text with a creation date of 2007. I don't recall purchasing it or even downloading it, but the title is interesting and I'd like to read it. This PDF file is located at: My Documents\My Digital Editions\restore\books

Just as background: I knowingly bought my first eBook from Kobobooks just today (13-Jan-11). It is in EPUB format and it was DRM-encoded. I wanted to cut and paste some text from this eBook and found it impossible because of the DRM, so I used Stream Recorder's excellent Python scripts (assuming that individual is the actual author), which worked splendidly.

When I tried to open the 2007 PDF file with Adobe Reader X, it opened a browser window to download Adobe Digital Edition 1.7.2. I cannot open the file with my alternate PDF readers (such as PDF-XChange, etc.) either. I installed and then launched Adobe Digital Editions 1.7.2 to read the PDF file from 2007, it gives the following error message:
Adobe DRM Error
System: 7
State: 4
Class: 15
Code: 31
Message: Error on response from server.
Scroll below or view error.log for more details.
Your Adobe software could not be activated.
HTTP error on Adobe DRM Activator request.
Adobe DRM Activator error.
Client Code: 31 - HTTP Code: 555
Fault location: 15
--- end ---

I've received this same error message about 30 times. Large numbers of unhappy Adobe Reader users get similar errors, and according to their posts, Adobe offers little or no solution or guidance on these problems unless you pay $39.99 for real support.

Then the next thing I tried was using A-PDF.com's "A-PDF Restrictions Remover", which removes read-only status and so forth, but it gave me an error message saying: "Unsupport[ed] encryption method"

So I figured I'd just cut through all the nonsense and use the Python scripts in this thread to remove the DRM and move on.

No such luck.

I'm running 32-bit XP Pro/SP3. I have 32-bit Python 2.7.1 with 32-bit PyCrypto installed. I used ineptkey_v5.0.py to successfully get adeptkey.der and I used ineptpdf8.4.50.pyw to try to unlock the file. The error I get is: "Error -5 while decompressing data: incomplete or truncated stream". For the record, the file is 1,333 KB in size.

Now, one thing I absolutely do NOT know is if I used this same computer to download the PDF file in 2007, but my best guess is that I did. But seeing as I've never authorized this computer with ADE till today, perhaps that's moot.

So, here are my questions:

(1): How can one tell whether any given PDF file is a "PDF eBook" or not?

(2): The error message from ADE above indicates a problem related to DRM. If this PDF file from 2007 is NOT a "PDF eBook", is there some other way to remove the DRM besides the Python scripts discussed in this thread?

(3): Can anyone offer any other suggestions?

Thanks!

How to remove DRM from sony ebooks (PDF)

ok i followed the steps,

i extracted the adeptkey file from adobe digital additions.

i ran the ineptpdf, since i am trying to convert pdfs, the dialog box appears, i select the input and create the output, the messages says file is decrypted. The script dialog box has a hard time closing.

When I open the converted pdf I get an error message "There was a error opening this document. There was a problem reading this document (14)."

I am using adobe reader 9.4 to read the converted file.

Any thoughts?

Re: How to remove DRM from sony ebooks (PDF)

If you have problem removing DRM from PDF files, download the latest version of DRM Tools Archive
Download DRM Tools Archive

Then try to use a Calibre plug-in first. If it doesn't work, try other solutions.

Read the readme files to set up everything properly (For example, use Python 2.6 32-bit and PyCrypto for Python 2.6).

Re: Remove DRM from PDF ebooks (Adobe Digital Editions)

hi, it's my first post, and i'm looking desperate to get some help, i hope you guys can help me... PDF Print Protection issue...
It's encrypted with "Fopen" third party encryptor...
opening the pdf in text editor i can see some clear rows:
223 0 obj<</Filter/FOPN_fLock/V 1>> (means version 1 of FOPN_fLock)

<</Size 302/Prev 659571/Root 224 0 R/Encrypt 223 0 R/Info 221 0 R/ID[<CE8CF98FBB6D4D4687582CB9142272F5><13E5010C8882954 6BFF7F1C7D36BBC4B>]>> (Proof of encryption)

here's the scenario:
i have 1 cd with pdf files, which can't be printed, but it can be viewed...
on the cd i have the follow folders:
Adobe (inside it's adobe reader 7.0 ready to run, no installation needed)
Docs (inside some folders containing pdf files with print protect)
FileOpen (inside 2 txt documents and update.exe)
Autorun.exe
Autorun.inf
Folaunch.exe
fOpen32.api

if you run the autorun.exe the pdf menu will appear and let you navigate to the specific pdf file, and view it, but no print permission.
if you try to go to folder "Docs" and run any pdf directly you will get the error " The FileOpen Manager service is not running" , then it opens internet explorer and open the following url " http://www.fileopen.com/getplugin.asp?type=Filter&name=FOPN_fLock" which is no longer available...

if you go to "Adobe" folder from CD, and run "AcroRd32.exe" it will open the Acrobat Reader software. By clicking on "File" then "open" and navigate to any of the folders containing the protected pdf's, you can open any pdf you want, but again you don't have the permission to print....

I have tried all pdf unlockers on google, but without any success...
then i came across the ineptpdf and ineptkey but first one asks for password or drm file, and second one says :"Error Adobe Digital Edition not activated". I have tried the ineptkey even with the pdf file opened in adobe reader.

I will post a few links to the files i have, maybe someone can figure it out...

Thanks guys!

here is the adobe folder from cd (the one which opens the files):
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=1LUN7KOW
It contains all the folders and plugins and everything

here is the rest of:
FileOpen Autorun.exe Autorun.inf Folaunch.exe fOpen32.api
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=UFZ6ACS1

and here is one pdf from "Docs" folder:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=JNV2BHIB

First time when you run the autorun.exe file from cd, it asks for " Authorization String"... I don't know if it's relevant.
If you need it, just pm me the Product ID and Input String and i'll send the Authorization ....

I don't know what to do more to print the files, i need them on paper support for a good friend of mine, which doesn't know anything about computers...

Re: Remove DRM from PDF ebooks (Adobe Digital Editions)

I have installed "Adobe Digital Editions" and used ineptkey.pyw to get the "adeptkey.der" and it worked to obtain the key.
Now when i open the "inept.pyw" it automatically select the "adeptkey.der" file, i specify the pdf input file and the pdf output file too and i get an error:

using ineptpdf7.4.pyw the error is :
"Error: Unknown filter: param={'Filter':/FOPN#5ffLock, 'V': 1}

using ineptpdf8.4.48 the error is:
"Error: FOPN_fLock not supported, yet ..."

any suggestions?

Re: Remove DRM from PDF ebooks (Adobe Digital Editions)

Hi everybody,

I purchased a pdf book yesterday. I did not know that I should get an ID for ADE. Then, I could open the file but I could not open the file on my other computer. Then, I got an ID. At the last stage, it warned me that all existing items would be non readable. But I ignore it and then I could not read my book even on my PC. I uninstalled the ADE and re-install but the problem did not solve. I could not download the PDF again.

Today, I saw this forum and I am using the following:
ADE 1.7.1
Python 2.6.4
Windows XP 32 bits
Ineptkey 5.0
Ineptpdf 7.4

but the error decrypting book session key appears.

What can I do?
Thank you for your help.
