Remove DRM from .divx to watch them on a standalone DVD player with DivX support

Hello to all of you.

I am Vlad and I have a question which I hope won't disobey any rules of this nice forum.

I have purchased a few days a go a video file from INA (Institut National des Archives) France.

The file that I was offered is a .divx file that will be played only by DivX player on my computer. I wanted to play this file on my standalone DVD player which until now has been able to read any kind of video file. Is there any chance I can do this?

I have read that the .divx files are protected by a system called DRM. Is there anyway I can get rid of it, because of course any conversion I have tried to the DVD video format was useless.

Many thanks,
Vlad

Haven't seen any DRM removal software for .divx files yet. It seems like screen video capture software is the only solution. Another solution - never buy DRM protected content!

p.s. There is no problem about asking to remove DRM protection from the purchased DRM files. But distribution of unDRMed files is illegal, they are for personal use only.

How to play DRM protected .divx files on a standalone DVD player with DivX support

Quote:
Once a consumer downloads a DivX video to a PC, that content can be viewed on any of the consumer's registered DivX Certified devices.
So you need a PC or a DivX Certified device + register your DivX Certified device.

Yes seems that is the only solution indeed.

However I have tried some softwares that you have recommended on your page, and the quality is 75% lost...Therefore I think I have just wasted a bit of my income on DRM protected software. Never would have imagined to be tricked after I paid for a file.
To be limited in such a nasty way.

Screen video capture software need some tricks:
  • You need a 2-pass encoding to get smaller files. But you can't capture from your screen using a 2-pass encoding!
  • For the best quality it is recommended to record using Huffyuv lossless codec first. It provides very good quality, but generates a data stream of 10-15 MB/sec.
If your hard drive is not fast enough then you may use a Motion JPEG codec: Morgan MJPEG, PICVideo MJPEG, MainConcept MJPEG. They generate data stream of 3-8 MB/sec while providing good quality.
  • After that you may compress your Huffyuv or Motion JPEG recordings into MPEG-4 (DivX) using a 2-pass encoding.
  • It is usually a good idea to convert DivX to DivX, Windows Media to Windows Media, Real Media to Real Media. But you can test other codecs as well like free MPEG-4 AVC codec x264 or free MPEG-4 ASP codec xvid. It doesn't mean that you have to use a .divx container with the DivX video codec 'coz you can use .avi, .mp4, .mkv or .ogm instead.

Hi people,

I'm in the same situation as Vlad; i have purchased drm protected divx files from INA and would like to burn them to DVD.

I would like to know if there's still no ways to remove the DRM, and if not, instead of using screen recording software, wouldn't it be better to use the TV OUT option of a video card and try to capture the data this way?

I've really seen some advices to use your TVout and a camcorder to record video. It is one of the options. Or you can use screen video capture software.

Thank you.
Could you point me to the first option ( TVout, camcorder ) ?

You just connect your TVOut and sound card ouput with a couple of cables to your digital camcorder and record with it to digital format. It really depends on your camera. It might be a MiniDV that will require you to convert your video to a format that is smaller.
