Remove DRM from audio&video by recording from Windows Media Player and iTunes

Tunebite Platinum is a shareware DRM removal software for Windows, that allows you to legally remove DRM protection from music, audio books and video clips by recording them while they are being played with Windows Media Player or Apple iTunes.

Tunebite supports the following audio/video files formats: .WMA, .M4P, .AAC, .M4B, .WMV, .M4V,...

Further I will relate to Automate unDRM as an alternative for Tunebite, although you may use drmdbg and drm2wmv without it. Or you may use DecryptIt instead. It won't matter for the purpose of this discussion.

Tunebite Platinum vs. Automate unDRM
  1. Both require valid licenses to remove DRM protection.
  2. Automate unDRM supports only .wma, .asf, .wmv files, while Tunebite supports much more formats that can be played with Windows Media Player and iTunes.
  3. Automate unDRM is free, while Tunebite is not.
  4. Tunebite is much slower. What takes minutes in Tunebite takes seconds with Automate unDRM.
  5. Tunebite uses lossy conversion, while Automate unDRM retains the exact same quality of the original wma/wmv/asf file. Automate unDRM just removes the DRM header of a Windows Media file.
When re-encoding media file you are likely to get artifacts. Usually it is not a big problem for audio files, but the quality of video files can deteriorate significantly (or you will get bigger files, still having lost some quality).
  6. Automate unDRM is not an easy to set-up software. It may require a fresh installation of Windows XP. Automate unDRM doesn't work after applying some Windows updates and Hotfixes. See the following thread for more Automate unDRM related problems
Remove DRM from WMV, ASF, WMA using Automate unDRM v2.0 (drmdbg, drm2wmv, DecryptIt)

Automate unDRM is no longer recommended. Please use FairUse4WM instead.

How to use TuneBite

Here is a guide to Tunebite:

1. Download Tunebite and install the software on your computer.

2. Sound card and recording settings: Launch the program, follow the configuration wizard to set the sound card (there will be some sounds which are necessary to detect your sound system). Click "Next" to config high-speed digital dubbing which can accelerate digital recording.

3. Set output audio formats from MP3, WMA, OGG: Click "Next", select the audio format you'd like to output from MP3, OGG or WMA. Let's take "MP3" for example.

Download MP3 encoder by clicking "Search for lame_enc.dll" or download it from here. Then click "Import lame_enc.dll", browse to the .dll file and load into.

4. Set output video formats from WMV, MP4: Click "Next". If you want to record and convert protected M4V or WMV files, please check "record video, when original music file contains video" and click "Next" to continue. Then select the output video format you like from "MPEG4" (Playable on iPod, PSP, MP4 players) or "WMV" (Most portable media players).

5. Start converting: Add media file(s) or complete folder(s) you want to record by clicking "add" button or by dragging and dropping them into the window. Click "GO" to start recording and converting. If you only want to recode audio, please check "audio only" box.

Wish to be helpful!

freeTunes for stripping copy-protection from Windows Media Player and iTunes

freeTunes is another DRM removal software for stripping copy-protection from from Windows Media Player (.WMA, .WMV) and iTunes (.M4P, .AAC, .MP4, .M4V files). Like SoundTaxi and TuneBite it converts protected audio/video files to unprtotected MP3, OGG, WMA by recording from Windows Media Player and iTunes. Like SoundTaxi and TuneBite it can preserve ID3 tags.
