I thought silverlight was just a new platform including plug-ins for Windows and Mac OS that used Windows Media streams.

Have you tried any Windows Media stream recorder on silverlight?

Sorry for not making it clear. I meant any streaming video recorder that supports Windows Media. WM Recorder is a nice choice for Windows Media streams.

Why on earth do you need to record something you have never seen?

p.s. M$ is a weird company. They use RTMP flash streams at MSN, while trying to advertise Silverlight.

Re: software to capture microsoft's new silverlight (?)

There are different kind of streams that Silverlight can use, so the methods of recording of Silverlight video streams are different:
  • Silverlight can use regular Windows Media streams, which can be recorded with many streaming audio/video recorders. One of the best Windows Media recorders is WM Recorder (WMR).
  • Silverlight can use DRM-protected Windows Media streams. Although they can be recorded with WMR, you may not be able to play the recordings due to the DRM protection. But you can use screen video capture software to record anything you can see on your screen including DRM-protected videos.
  • Silverlight can use Smooth Streaming
  • Silverlight can use encrypted streams. The only way to record them that I know is by using screen video capture software.

Re: How to save Silverlight (nbcolympics.com) video?

Have you tried Replay Media Catcher 4 (Jaksta)? It supports version 1 of Smooth Streaming Media which is what a lot of videos on nbcolympics.com are streaming. Some are version 2 which I am still working on. In any case RMC 4 (Jaksta) will tell you if its version 2 and not yet supported.

Please read the following about Smooth Streaming Media and how to handle the resulting fragmented MP4 file.

Quote:

What is Smooth Streaming Media?

Smooth Streaming Media is a new protocol for delivering HD audio and video from Microsoft.

Smooth Streaming provides a High Quality viewing experience as the quality of the video and audio served to the client adapts to the viewers connection speed.

RMC 4 (Jaksta) can detect and download Smooth Streaming MajorVersion 1. Jaksta will download the highest quality audio and video stream available in the streams manifest.

The resulting ISMV file is a fragemented MP4 file. The only player that can play these files is Microsofts Expression Encoder 3 (with Smooth Streaming). It also allows you to convert these files into other common formats. Microsofts Expression Encoder costs around 30 USD and is available from the Microsoft store.

for the first point this type of stream can be downloaded with no problem with RMC 4 (Jaksta)

for the third point this type of stream can de download from jaksta but only if it is made with version 1 of smooth streaming media(i don't understand why isn't still released a version of jaksta that support also the other version of silverlight)

for the fourth point is only a question of time (see for example the rtmp sniffer rtmpdump)

If you can help to mux smooth streaming v2 into MP4, please let us know.
