ineptepub.pyw error: Problem decrypting session key

hello everyone,

I had no problems installing and then removing the DRM from epub and PDF files, however, sometimes this method does not work. I get an error message saying 'Error: problem decrypting session key'. Does anyone know how to get around this?

Many thanks in advance!

Re: ineptepub.pyw error: Problem decrypting session key

I am getting the same problem as the last post for the two books I have tried to remove DRM from:

Quote:

I also am trying this stuff. I have everything loaded and I created the adeptkey.der ok when I load this stuff into the ineptepub.pyw box it states at the top of the box:
Error: Problem decrypting session key
Am I missing something?
I have all of the files you discussed loaded
Thanks!
I followed all the procedures described originally and every thing works fine until after selecting the files in the dialog box for input and output and clicking decrypt I get the error:
Quote:

Error: Problem decrypting session key
Per an earlier post on the same issue I unzipped one of the EPUB files I was attempting to remove the DRM from and found this code as the first line of the rights.xml file:
HTML Code:

<?xml version="1.0"?><adept:rights xmlns:adept="http://ns.adobe.com/adept"><licenseToken xmlns="http://ns.adobe.com/adept">
I am now at a loss as to what to try.

If you try to remove DRM from B&N ebooks, see the following thread:
How to remove DRM protection from B&N (Barnes & Noble) EPUB ebooks

Another problem is that ADE 1.7.2 changed how the key information is stored. If you have adeptkey.der generated prior to ADE 1.7.2, you can use it to remove DRM protection from ebooks downloaded before updating ADE to version 1.7.2.

    _http://download.macromedia.com/pub/developer/digitalpublishing/digitaleditions1_7_setup.exe
  3. When I ran the old version for the first time, it carped about needing to update in 44 days, I assume that you'll just be able to reinstall later ?
  4. Hold down Shift-Ctrl-D to de-authorize your PC. Digital Editions should close, but if it doesn't then restart.
  5. Re-authorize your PC as per usual
  6. ..now try running the ineptkey and ineptepub scripts again - this worked for me !

Solution #2:
  1. Just uninstall the new version, delete the ADEPT folder in the Registry.
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER>Software>Adobe>ADEPT
  2. Delete the My Digital Editions folder in My Documents.
  3. Reboot computer.
  4. Re-install the old version provided in the link below.
    Code:

    http://drop.io/a1bdxlq
(check all downloads with VirusTotal or any good antivirus)
  5. Reactivate ADE.
  6. Run the Ineptkey again to obtain the Adeptkey.der.
  7. Then you should be good to go.

Note:
Digital Editions will not download any new eBooks while it knows there is a newer version of itself available.

It is probably possible to work around this by figuring out what the update server is and block it by updating the hosts file or using a firewall etc etc,

..so to cut a long story short, I updated Digital Edition back to 1.7.2 but kept a copy of the key I grabbed from the 1.7.1 version and it still allows decrypting.

You can also re-download EPUB ebooks that were downloaded when using ADE prior to 1.7.2, then generate new adeptkey.der with inteptkey v.4.3 or ineptkeymac v.1. After that you can remove DRM protection using one ineptepub or aineptepub.

It is recommended to use ADE 1.7.2 and re-download ebooks (instead of downgrading ADE to v.1.7.1.)

Re: ineptepub.pyw error: Problem decrypting session key

Yeah, I had already found that suggested fix from another source. Unfortunately I went through the suggested procedure of removing the latest version of Digital Editions, installing the older version, and registering that. I then generated the new key file, but still encountered the same error:
Code:

Problem decrypting session key
as before. It was not a Barnes and Noble EPUB book; it is one I just recently purchased from Sony. So unless there is something else I’m doing wrong I guess I am out of luck. Thanks for your attempt to help though.

Slight rant. I actually have no problem with DRM as a means to protect intellectual property rights to prevent others distributing free copies of copyright material. What I object to is that if I buy an ebook from Sony I can view that on a Sony ebook viewer, but not on any other device. So if I replace my Sony with, say a Kindle, I have to buy the same book again. If this keeps up with each ebook viewer manufacturer having a proprietary format for ebooks that can only be viewed on their device it will severely restrict the growth for all.

Re: ineptepub.pyw error: Problem decrypting session key

Please try to do the following again. I haven't seen any problems with the following solution yet:
  1. Uninstall the new version of ADE
  2. Delete the ADEPT folder in the Registry.
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER>Software>Adobe>ADEPT
  3. Delete the "My Digital Editions" folder in "My Documents".
  4. Reboot computer.
  5. Re-install the old version provided in the link below
    Code:

    http://drop.io/a1bdxlq
    (check for viruses)
  6. Reactivate ADE.
  7. Run the Ineptkey again to obtain the Adeptkey.der.
  8. Then you should be good to go.

Some users even tried the update again, and still were able to remove DRM.

Re: ineptepub.pyw error: Problem decrypting session key

In frustration I put this whole business aside for a few days. The break inspired me to fresh thinking about the problem. The epub books I was having a problem with I had downloaded some time ago onto my previous computer. When I bought my new computer I just copied the files over. So anyway I deleted these old files and then downloaded them once more from my Sony ebook store account. Problem solved. The procedure worked perfectly to strip the DRM. Thanks so much for your help. Now if I could just remove the DRM from a couple of books I have in PDF format. ;).

Re: ineptepub.pyw error: Problem decrypting session key

I used Solution #1 without success. However, when I went back and used Solution #2 (involving editing the registry), it worked like a charm. You can even upgrade back to 1.7.2 after retrieving your key in 1.7.1 so you can download new material. As long as you don't try and grab your key again, all is ducky. I made several copies of my key and scattered them around various machines and drives just so that I would always have available in case I did something stupid, like double-clicking the wrong file. :)

Re: ineptepub.pyw error: Problem decrypting session key

While this thread has been very helpful in some regards, I am still having one problem.

I am going for Solution 2 in this case.

When I run ineptepub.pyw or ineptpdf.pyw, the input section does not recognize any of my files which I need to break the DRM of!

Am I doing something wrong? Do the files I need 'decrypting' need to be in a specific folder?

Where did you buy your ebooks and in what format?

Sorry for the delay on this.

I bought these books from infibeam.com, these are Adobe Digital Editions and epubs.

Hope this is sufficient information.

Thanks, anyway!

Hi,

I've been over these forums again and again and keep getting "error decrypting session key" message.
I'm not 100% on the registry file ADEPT deletion bit as I can't seem to locate the file path you've indicated in fix #2. (running XP)
I'm not great with computers but have managed to run the ineptkeys and ineptpdf and reinstall ADE 1.7.1 etc...but i think the issue is with this registry part...

Any suggestions? I wish I didn't have to do this...should've have read more closely before paying to download from a Kindle unsupported website!

Thanks!

Registry editors have a search function, so you can search for
"ADEPT".

I thought I made it, but now I am getting a new error "error: error -3 while decompressing: invalid block type"

Any suggestions on how to handle this?

Thanks.

Try to read the following thread:

If you can't solve your problem with it, post versions of Windows, Python, Pycrypto and scripts you're using.

Re: ineptepub.pyw error: Problem decrypting session key

Just a very simple question from a first time poster.

Im trying to do this for the first time, however not for me, for a friend.

And for that reason, they have sent me "there" purchased DRM epub book to try and sort out for them.

Now having followed all instructions, many, many times over, I felt I now understood what was going on, even to the point of me getting a "error decrypting session key"message.

Now having followed all the instructions in this post regarding , back tracking ADE, and deleteing registry entry, Im still gettng problems, either still with "error decrypting session key", or another strange one, "xxxx is not a zip file"

anyway my conclusion, would I be right in saying this is not working for me, because the friend has sent me there DRM'd books to ME to try and unlock?, or should that not matter??

Or in fact do they need to do this on there own PC??

thanks for any answers.

The whole point of using DRM is to prevent users from using DRM protected content on other computers. So you need to remove DRM on a computer with which you downloaded your DRM protected content. Moreover, you need to use the same OS.

Re: ineptepub.pyw error: Problem decrypting session key

So I've read over the various posts regarding breaking the DRM for Sony epub books and have tried to do it myself, which has resulted in the 'Problem decrypting session key' error. I've tried a multitude of the suggested fixes, including downgrading to a previous Reader Edition version, using different versions of the ineptepub and ineptkey scripts, so on and so forth. I'm running all this on Windows XP (which is actually run via Parallels on my MacBook Pro) and using new copies of the epub files downloaded from Sony's Reader Library on the same Windows system. Does anyone have any suggestions? I have an iPad now and Sony's pissing me off with this 'you can't use books you have legally purchased on any system or reader other than our own' crap. Thank you for your help!

Re: ineptepub.pyw error: Problem decrypting session key

Hi,
Thanks for your reply

I checked my rights.xml file:
It contains the html code

<?xml version="1.0"?><adept:rights xmlns:adept="http://ns.adobe.com/adept"><licenseToken xmlns="http://ns.adobe.com/adept">

and also tried unistalling the ADE 1.7.2 and installing older version and then by generating the new key using ineptkey.pyw script. version 3 and ineptepub.pyw, version 2. Then also I got the Same error as

Error: Problem decrypting session key

And I tried and second solution

Solution #2:

1. Just uninstall the new version, delete the ADEPT folder in the Registry.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER>Software>Adobe>ADEPT
2. Delete the My Digital Editions folder in My Documents.
3. Reboot computer.
4. Re-install the old version provided in the link below.
Code:

http://drop.io/a1bdxlq

(check all downloads with VirusTotal or any good antivirus)
5. Reactivate ADE.
6. Run the Ineptkey again to obtain the Adeptkey.der.
7. Then you should be good to go.

But this too fails..

Plz let me know what I have to do to break the drm.

@gauthamb
As you can see above, several other users had a similar problem and tried to follow the above mentioned steps several times. It worked for them, so it should work for you as well.

Also try ineptkey.pyw version 4.3 and aineptepub.pyw as mentioned above.

I too am getting the "problem decrypting session key", and would like to roll back to 1.7.1 of ADE, but can't get the link: http://drop.io/a1bdxlq to work.

Is the installer for 1.7.1 still there?

Ok, please ignore this. I installed the 4.3 version of ineptkey and it's all good.

Thanks for all your work on this stuff, this is very useful and helpful for those of us with a big investment in Sony Reader Library purchases who now want to switch to the iPad.

Please remember that iPad screens are similar to computer screens, so Sony Reader, Amazon Kindle and other readers that use eInk technology are much better for your eyes.

Hi,

I have the exact same problem as many here: "error: problem decrypting session key". I downgraded to ADE 1.7.1 after deleting ADEPT and rebooting as suggested. I'm using ineptkey.pyw 4.3 and aineptepub.pyw 4.1 also as suggested. No dice. One issue: the epubs were originally downloaded from a different computer than this one, and if I try to add one to the ADE library it says "Document is licensed for a different user account". Is this an issue? The computer originally used to download the epubs is currently kaput. Am I out of luck? Or is there a solution?

Thanks in advance.

This file is generated by the ineptkey script, but I guess your were not using it on your old computer, so my advice was useless.

Have you tried to contact your ebook seller and explain that your computer has died?

I don't know. But try to use simple names and directories, for example:
Code:

c:\undrm\1.epub
