How to open FLV files (FLV1 or VP6) with freeware editor VirtualDub

Free open-source FLV Input Plugin - is an input plugin for VirtualDub (1.8.0 or newer required) that allows to open FLV files with freeware video editor VirtualDub.

FLV Input Plugin only supports the following audio and video codecs:
video : H.263 and VP6
audio : MP3 and PCM

How to install FLV Input Plugin for VirtualDub
  1. Download the latest version of FLV Input Plugin from http://moitah.net/download/latest/FLV_Input_Driver.zip
  2. Extract the FLVInputDriver.vdplugin from FLV_Input_Driver.zip into your VirtualDub\plugins folder.
  3. Make sure ffdshow-tryouts is installed
  4. Open "VFW configuration" (not "Video decoder configuration" which is for DirectShow decoding) from its Start menu group, go to the Decoder tab, Codecs section, and make sure FLV1 and VP6F are set to libavcodec.
  5. To convert FLV to AVI without any editing or filtering, load an FLV in VirtualDub, make sure "Direct Stream Copy" is selected in both the Video and Audio menus, and choose "Save as AVI" from the File menu.

Please note that FLV Input Plugin for VirtualDub does NOT support h264 video codec.

You can use Direct Show Input Driver for opening h264 .FLV files.

You can also edit h.264 .FLV files with freeware AVIDemux.

And you can use Quicktime plugin for VirtualDub for opening h264 .MP4 files.

I like Cyberlink PowerDVD, so probably PowerDirector is also very good. Note that it is not free

Hello. I am new to this site and a noob in general when it comes to audio/video editing on a PC. I have used VirtualDub but it was years ago and I had someone helping me. Anyway, I came to this site because I want to edit .FLV files downloaded from YouTube without having to convert them to a format the Windows Movie Maker recognizes (I know WMM is probably lame to you guys, but as I said, I'm a noob). So I downloaded the FLV Input Plugin and extracted the files into the VDub plugins folder as outlined above. But that's as far as I get because I don't know how to "make sure ffdshow-tryouts is installed" because I don't know where to look for that. Nor do I know how to navigate the proceeding steps. Anyone care to help me out with this?

Thanks.

Re: How to open FLV files (FLV1 or VP6) with freeware editor VirtualDub

Well I did everything the post directed, but when I try to open an FLV file in VDub I get an Error message saying that the video does not have a video stream. Any suggestions?

What kind of video codec is used in your FLV video file? H.263 or VP6?
If it uses h.264, then you may extract audio and video tracks and mux them into an .MP4 file.
