My choices for video/audio conversion!

I use Windows Media Encoder 9 for converting into .wmv files although it doesn't always accept all types of video files. Use a different encoder first and try to use Windows Media Encoder 9 to convert into .wmv if that is what you want to do. I use Windows Movie Maker (latest) for encoding into .wmv as well (can't change size heightxwidth though) doesn't always accept all types of video files as well. I also use it to convert to .wma. I use All to AVi for encoding into .avi. It won't accept all types of video files but try it. AVIMuxGui works for some files as well.

I use Belight 0.21 for encoding audio (various types check it out) as well, I like it because you can adjust the bitrate super low. Good for cell phones.

I now use mediacoder for video and some audio conversion.

These are all free!
