"Memory corruption detected in low memory" error when installing/booting Ubuntu 9.10
I didn't have any problem installing Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) on my laptop, but for whatever reason I wasn't able to install it on my desktop.
I was either getting the "Memory corruption detected in low memory" error when try to several distros in several mode or it was freezing. I had more luck with an alternate CD (text mode installation), however the installation process was freezing when trying to format/or select a partition.
I've noticed that many people experience the "Memory corruption detected in low memory" problem when using multiple graphics card. I had my built-in video card and my external NVidia 7600GT video card. The Intel motherboard doesn't have BIOS settings I was expecting, it didn't allow disabling one of the video cards as well as tweaking many other options.
I tried to remove the NVidia video card and installed Ubuntu 9.10 without any problems. But then I installed the NVidia card back to the PCI-Express slot and Ubuntu 9.10 wasn't not able to load again.
Pressing E in the Grub and adding "acpi=off noapic nosmp" didn't help to boot. Safe mode wasn't able to go any further then regular booting.
Removed the "quiet" and "splash" options and got the same error when booting: "Memory corruption detected in low memory". Ubuntu was freezing and it was so disappointing.
The solution was so easy:
In BIOS go to Advanced -> Video Config -> Primary video adapter and change it to "Ext PCIE Graphics".
Ubuntu is not freezing anymore. I can boot without any problems.
I'm still testing Windows 7 x64, but spend most of the time in Ubuntu 9.10. I really love the way it works!
