How to kill wine application with kill command from command line

As a Windows user I expected to press CTRL+ALT+DEL and see the list of processes that could be easily killed with a GUI program. However CTRL+ALT+DEL didn't bring the list of processes or applications in Ubuntu 9.10. But it is very easy to kill the application from a command line:

Type the following in the Terminal:

ps axwww | grep KEYWORD

This will show a list of processes that have KEYWORD in them.

Example: Killing Replay Media Catcher from command line:

15864 ?        Sl     0:01 C:\Program Files\Replay Media Catcher\MediaCatcher.exe                                                                 
15903 pts/1    S+     0:00 grep --color=auto Replay

Look for the lowest number process id (the first column) that says something like "C:\Program Files\Replay Media Catcher\MediaCatcher.exe"

Then use this number to kill the process with (kill -9 PROCESS_NUMBER):

admin@admin-desktop:~$ ps axwww | grep Replay
15903 pts/1    S+     0:00 grep --color=auto Replay

You can also use the pidof to find the process id and then use this process id with the kill command. For example, if you want to kill the tvtime process:

If you don't like command line, you can kill an application with xkill. Press ALT+F2, type xkill and hit the Run button. The program will displays a special cursor (usually a crosshair or a skull and crossbones) and will display a message such as

Select the window whose client you wish to kill with button

If a non-root window is then selected, the server will close its connection to the client that created that window, and the window will be destroyed.

Please note that xkill is not intended to be used as a routine way to terminate X client programs, but only as a last resort to abort malfunctioning or malicious clients.

Unlike kill, xkill does not request that the client process, which may be running on a different machine, be terminated. In fact, the process can continue running without an X connection. Most clients, however, do abort when their X connections are unexpectedly closed.
