Keep this site running well - html codingI'm hoping this public post will be well received.
I've been online where my browser slows and gets sluggish at some sites. I began to check into why and find that they don't conform to W3C http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/W3c specifications for html pages. Yep. there are specifications for html. And when they're followed your browser, any browser, should work well. I remember, years ago, when trying to find the photos of a friend's website I could see them using IE but not with another browser. That's when I began to understand the importance of doing things so they would work no matter who watched them. This site is good compared to others. You can verify any page using W3C's validator. http://validator.w3.org/ If you use Opera it's as simple as typing W3 in front of any URL to test it. (1) I encourage you to test pages that don't work well, for you, and write to the site's managers. They in turn will, hopefully, fix and improve the performance. A web site doesn't have to be ugly to conform to W3C standards. See the BBC's page (below) which is tested daily by W3C for use in the ... chart. http://www.bbc.co.uk/ See the list of sites check, daily, by Wikipedia for their validation score The chart is 3/4 down the page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/W3C_Mar...dation_Service Here's the list of W3C members. Some are the largest on the web. http://www.w3.org/Consortium/Member/List For this site I really look forward to using it and am glad the number of bad programming errors is low. Thanks! Andre (1) this has to be set and any letters, W3, or xyz, can be used to shortcut it. Last edited by ILove2RecordSomething : 04-15-2011 at 05:07 PM. Reason: add information |

Re: Keep this site running well - html codingThank you for your suggestion. We use vBulletin, one of the best forum scripts.
I have removed the Facebook Like and Google Buzz buttons, so everything seems to work fine for me in Google Chrome, Firefox and Opera. I don't have the w3 shortcut in the latest version of Opera. |

Re: Keep this site running well - html codingI was oblique about the shortcut(s) feature in Opera.
It works this way. Let's say you often find a word or phrase that you'd like to find out whether this site, for example, has something to say about it. This means you'll be searching this site. Rather than come here and enter the search into the search field you can assign any letter (or number?) to search stream-recorder.com's automatically this way. If the words you want to search are: help snoop sniff stream you can type into Opera's address field xx help snoop sniff stream xx = the letter(s) you assigned for the search stream-recorder.com You assign letters by right clicking on the site's search field and choose 'create search' . You get a popup window of Audio/video stream recording forums (that's the default name in the type of search) keyword = this is where you enter letter or letters as your shortcut Opera 9x and 10x have the feature so 11x probably does also. Right click on any site's search field to create a shortcut to that site's search. I use it with google a lot. This is the best use of the feature, I think. I create a search shortcut for google's site: command. that is site:stream-recorder.com/ would give me all of the links on this site or site:stream-recorder.com/forum/ would give me all of the links in the forums. site:stream-recorder.com/forum/ xyz finds all occurances of 'xyz' in the forums So I make Opera's shortcut, site, mean to use Google's site: command This works for me when I go to a site like abc.com and am kind of lost .. I can put site abc.com 'search term' and cause Google to search abc.com entire site for my 'search term' It sounds complicated. Using it simpler than explaining it. You do have to 'learn' how to use the tool. Usually this means, right click on a site's search window.. but in my example I'm substituting Google's features. This means I have to edit the bits of information that Opera uses to direct to Google and then apply Google's search command(s) to my 'search term' Usually I have to just replace a %s (variable) in Opera's shortcut code. It's simple really. Do it once and you can do it over and over. And remember that using the tool the way it was intended only requires right clicking on any site's search field. If that's what you only want to do. I mention Google's ability because Google can search any site better, IMHO, than most site's search engine can. One important tip: If you highlight a term on a page and right click you can choose to search for it.. I think, using any shortcut key. If I'm wrong you can still copy and paste that into the url, add your shortcut, and do the following: Here's some of my search shortcuts. IMDB - Search the Movie database for the search term Z - search amazon for the search term von - search my supermarket (Safeway) for the search term W - search wikipedia for the search term w3c - I put this in front of any page url and I've set it to put that page into W3C's validation engine. That was how this post started! : ) I have dozens more of the shortcuts and they're easy to make and use. I looked for pages online to help explain but I'm not finding very many.. If I do find them I'll post back here. I promise. A. PS I created a shortcut called SR for searching stream-recorder.com when I right clicked on the search field of this site. Now I get the results of this site's search engine when I type into Opera's url / address line: sr 'search term' where 'search term' is what I'm looking for. Easy huh? Re: Keep this site running well - html codingThank you for the explanation. I've been using the google shortcut and some customs shortcuts for ages in Opera. I just don't have the w3c shortcut in the latest version of Opera.
I also like the way the latest version of Google Chrome searches. You just enter the name of a web-site (like youtube.com, amazon.com), then hit the space and it will allow you to enter the search term. |
