Finally!! a way to save thoes stubborn video's from ww.vtc.com

this is my very 1st tutorial, hope you injoy. It took me such a long time to find how to save these video's. And reading forum after forum of people having the same problem. As soon as i figured it out i rushed on here (demanded activation of my username)

I didnt feel like taking snapshots and loading them up one by one and typing an explination. so i just did this on a whim.

One thing i didnt mention in the video is that you can load as many video's as you want, after they are playing . pause them and wait till its finished downloading -then minimize it, load the next video. and then the next. up to how many you've set your chache to. It dosent use up that much ram suprisingly.

I hope you understand the video, its late and im beat. lol ive been trying to do this forever. so here ya go.

1st thing you need is Quicktime 6.4 -might have to uninstall any newer version of quicktime

Not to sure. I think 6.4 was the last time the TMP files where used. Now they are stored with no extention and encrypted.

Get thoes 3 files listed. the quicktime, 6.4 , the backup utility, and the vtc player..



Close all your running progrAMs and empty your Temp folder (c:\documents and settings>username>local settings>Temp. Keep this folder open and open your VTC player, As you will see, it will store a .tmp file (thats the actual video itself) but you cannot access it or copy it. pausse the video and Wait till the video is downlaoded -watch the progress bar-and minimize it . dont close the video, up a (20th video) , just keep hitting pause on each loaded video. Will all of the video's minimized and paused. Go into your backup utility and select "let me chose what file(s) to back up. Select your temp folder. and make sure you point your temp save to the desktop or special folder .After its backed up mark down where you left off and close all the video's and the VTC player ***NOTE- you might have to CTR-ALT-DEL in order to fully close the player. After the VTC player is closed restore your backed up files, they will be restored back to your temp folder but you can now acess them..


Hope that is quicker too:P

Ok, I have tried my best to backup the temp folder, but it just won't budge, I even tried to install NTbackup.msi on my machine, but nothing.

I might add that I am using the new VTC Player, if anyone could post a link to an older version so that I can try it would be great

Ok, this might seem a bit intense or over the top and long, but it is complete and I had some spare time so I decided to type this up.

Below are the instructions for how to download movies / videos from vtc.com virtual training classroom and possibly other QuickTime .mov streaming websites.

You need the 3 files here, QuickTime v6.4, ntbackup.msi, vtcplayer.zip (this was the latest copy of vtc player as of November 29th when I wrote this). I include it now along with this tutorial just in case it no longer works with whatever version is out now.

Step 1.

Ok, first install QuickTime 6.4, it must be this version as this version is capable of storing the videos in the cache when you watch them. Once installed, then look down in the lower right corner of your display screen and find the task tray icon. right click it and choose QuickTime preferences. In the 'browser plug-in' section, make sure that 'save movies in the disk cache' option is check marked.

Step 2.

Install the ntbackup.msi file if for some reason your windows xp doesn't have it already. you can check by typing 'ntbackup' at the 'RUN' prompt which you can find by clicking on the start menu and choosing 'run...'. You can also check if you already have this by going to START --> PROGRAM --> ACCESSORIES --> SYSTEM TOOLS --> BACKUP. if you have it, then you probably don't need this. (I'm just guessing, i had it already, but i installed this one just in case it's an updated version, not sure.)

Step 3.

Extract the vtcplayer.zip file to a directory and run the vtcplayer executable (may also run the latest version from vtc.com, but don't know if it will work or not). Once the application starts, choose the EDIT menu and then go into preferences. If you have a VTC account, then put in your login and password right there. If not, you'll probably only be able to download the free videos from each title (the same ones they offer for free from each title when you visit their site). I haven't tested because I already have an account with vtc myself so I used my account. Then click the CACHE tab and change it so it says, view the last 250 movies in RAM. I once set this to a reasonable number like 50, but there are many vtc titles that have more than 50 movies so I recommend 250 setting.

Step 4.

Double click 'My computer Icon' and go into your main drive and then proceed into the following directory.

C:\Documents and Settings\{user name}\Local Settings\Temp

where {user name} in the above example is the same as the username that you use to login to windows xp.

OPTIONAL STEP 5.

Try to delete as much of the files in this directory as possible. They are all temporary stored files so it's safe to delete them. Doesn't matter about the directory's, but you can delete them also if you want (I did). Some of them may be in use so you won't be able to delete them. I had two files that I couldn't delete because they were in use, just delete as many as possible and write down the filenames of the ones that you can't. If you highlight them all and press delete, chances are you'll think you can't delete allot of them, because windows deletes them in order of your selection usually and windows stops when it hits one that's in use, but windows doesn't continue deleting after it hits that file. Which means you can still delete more files you just have to delete small chunks of files until your left with just the ones you can't delete. so it's clean as possible, this makes it easy to pick out the movie files later. Write down the files on a piece of paper or something so that you know they are not movie files later on.

Step 6.

Run the VTC player and keep that directory view of that TEMP folder open and watch it. When you run the VTC player it makes a file (at least it did for me), then find your title and click play on the first movie. It will say 'connecting to server..' When the movie start to play, you might not see video but trust me, it's included in that stream. Wait about 5 seconds after clicking play button, then pause it. You can't use the controls directly at the bottom of the video, there should be another tiny little window under that where you can click pause. Notice in the TEMP directory a file appeared, pay no attention to the filesize. (for me the filesize was tiny but it later increased to normal filesizes somehow, don't know how or why). Although you might not think that is your movie, it really is. Now go back to the list of movies and click the second movie. Do the same thing, click play, once it starts, pause it the same way. Now another file will appear (these files will later turn into your movies if you keep following this tutorial.

Step 7.

Click start menu, choose 'run...', type in 'ntbackup' to start the nt backup utility, you can also start it by going to that 'system tools' method i mentioned earlier. Once it starts, go up to TOOLS menu, choose OPTIONS, click 'exclude files' tab. browse that list for the one that excludes your temp directory it will end with temp/* or something like that, i can't remember exactly. If you don't do this step, then you won't be able to select the files in your TEMP directory. After you do this you need to tell the wizard that you want to 'Backup Selected files, drives or network data'. It might be called something very similar but anyhow, choose that one that lets you backup and choose what you want to backup. Then when it asks you what to backup, choose your main drive, and then click the little PLUS signs and go to that same path i showed you earlier.

C:\Documents and Settings\{user name}\Local Settings\Temp

And put a checkmark next to all those new files that appeared there including the one that VTC player made when it started as well as that other weird one called 'TempPlayerMessages'. I don't know if these files are required, but i did it anyway. If you made that optional list from step #5, then don't include any of those files as you already know they are not movies. save the backup on your desktop or somewhere and give it a unique filename. After it finishes the backup, click the CLOSE button and exit the backup utility.

Step 8.

Now you can close all of your VTC windows and then close the application itself. VTC player has been known to hang (freeze up) here. And most of the time it seems to close fine, but if you do a CTRL-ALT-DELETE, then click the name column header to arrange by name (easier to find), you will probably see it still running and taking up your CPU. End task on it to end that madness.

Step 9.

When you do this, the files from the TEMP directory will be gone now and the VTC application is shut down and not running. Now you run the 'ntbackup' utility again and this time tell it that you want to do a restore. then specify your backup file wherever you put it. Then click next and on the next on the left side, expand it twice until you see your main drive, mine is C:, put a check mark on that one. Then in the 'RESTORE FILES TO:' section, I usually select ‘ALTERNATE LOCATION’, then I go create a directory somewhere, usually on my desktop. then I come back and I click the browser button and input that directory. then you have to confirm it and if it asks you for any options, i think leave all settings the way they were and it will restore the files from the TEMP directoy back to your specified directory.

Now the movies just need to be renamed and you can play them as well. However, you cannot play them with QuickTime 6.4, you need to remove it and install the latest version of QuickTime to view the movies ( not sure why ). All the files need to be renamed to have .mov on the end of course. You can use photoshop’s batch renamer if you want to rename them in bulk but your still going to have to write an html document that presents them in a nice neat manner back to yourself. Or whatever you do with them i guess is your own business. later!

I've tested this on Wednesday, November 29th 2006 and it is completely working.

Got the idea from the original poster who simply neglected to mention a few things that's all. After playing around for about an hour I check through the settings on the ntbackup utility and quicktime and thought I would post a few of the things that were left out

Unfortunately I was wrong. The title that I tried the method on was a very old title called just PHP. I guess it's also been updated since so I guess they don't care if people copy it. But I tried the MySQL title and this method DOES NOT work.

VTC has everything pretty well locked up and secured in Java script.

The only way I have found to do this is to use Camtasia Studio. Works like a charm, and allows me to save in any video format I choose with all the quality maintained.
