Help With Reconnecting To Streams

I use a program called Total Recorder to record audio streams from various programs and online streams. The problem is with the programs I use to connect to those streams. The stream sometimes disconnects and the programs have limited ability to reconnect to the stream. I've used Real Player and Winamp. When they disconnect they won't try long for a reconnect. Some streaming programs go down for a minute or more and there is the problem I'm looking for a player that will play .pls or .m3u streams and have the ability to set how many times it tries to connect. Is there any player out there that does this?

There are plenty of programs that can reconnect. For example, Replay AV, NetTransport.

What web-pages are you trying to record from?

Thanks for the suggestions. I record from different radio stations and other streams. Most of them can be opened by Real Player or Windows Media Player. Some streams use Flash Player and those seem to work better, well as long as Flash Player doesn't crash and it does from time to time.

I've tried Replay before and it worked OK but Total Recorder has lots of features like selecting the particular application to record from. It has a great way to name and date files. I've been using it for over ten years and I'm just used to it. But I'll switch if I find that Replay AV works better.

Recording sound from specific applications is a very cool feature, but since my PCs have Windows Vista or Windows 7, I can't use it.

I haven't been recording Windows Media and Real Player streams recently. There are plenty of users using Replay AV for recording radio, so I suggest you to ask them whether Replay AV can reconnect reliably or not.

Personally I really liked downloading/capturing Windows Media and Real Media/Real Audio streams with WM Recorder. And the latest version works fine with HTTP and RTMP flash player streams.

You may also try to download your streams using shareware NetTransport and freeware Orbit Downloader.


Or you may use multiple programs. For downloading Windows Media streams you may try freeware GetASFStream, SDPReceiver. StreamboxVCR should still work fine for real streams.

I used Total Recorder extensively. The 'Advanced' tab in the 'Scheduled item' screen provides options to restart. This is for both background recording and sound-card recording, although the options are different. Are these not working? Is there something beyond this that you were questioning?

Total recorder can record from sound card only, so can't help to reconnect. You need to download/capture stream instead. And this is not something Total Recorder can do.

It can download Shoutcast/Icecast streams and Windows Media audio streams. Plenty of programs including open source ones can do that. And since Shoutcast stream rippers can split and tag songs as well as reconnect properly, not sure why using Total Recorder.
