What is this DRM. what does it mean and what is its full form. What do you mean by "unprotecting" the songs?
Does this mean simple conversion of formats of sound files or something else?

Digital Right Management (DRM) restricts the usage of audio/video files. DRM protection was meant to stop piracy, but it poses too many restrictions and limits your Fair Use rights. By removing DRM protection (unprotecting media files) you remove any restrictions. After that you're free to listen to audio files and watch videos on any device you have.

Please note that while removing DRM for the sake of watching your movie on different players does fall under fair use conditions, keeping it after it expires doesn't, is illegal and is absolutely discouraged. After it expires you should delete all copies of the unprotected movie. The fact that similar/same technologies are applied for fair use situations is irrelevant.
