How to convert a music file to MP3 with iTunes (change the bit-rate of an MP3 file)

  • Open iTunes.
  • In the upper left corner, click on Edit, and select Preferences.
  • Select the Advanced tab.
  • Select the Importing tab.
  • There should be two drop down menus near the top. The first one will have various encoders. Click on mp3 encoder.
  • If the second drop down menu doesn't already have the bit-rate you need like High Quality (160kbp/s), then select it.
  • Click the OK button.
  • Finally, select music files which bit rate you would like to change. Right click on such a file, and select Convert this selection to MP3

There are many other converters you can use.


Please note that if you convert 130kbps MP3 file to 300kbps MP3 file, you will get bigger file of the same quality. To get better quality you need to re-rip your music from an audio CD using higher bit-rate.
