Choosing the best codec for quick editing

I record streaming video ok with the windows media codec - but the file is slow and processor intensive when I am editing it. (hours for 10 minutes to make h264)

If I change to avi (either of the mpeg4) - it is really quick in the editing stage - but during recording I constantly get the alert (!)frame rate too high - and then there is a problem with the pic and sound sync afterwards. I have no control over the frame rate of what is being presented.

Any advice gratefully received.

Running windows 7 - dual core i3 - laptop
