Cannot identify subtitle format error

I can only find a couple of responses to this question and no doubt it has been covered before, however I am at wits end as none of the answers solve my problem.

Macbook Pro 2.1 GHZ. OS 10.7
Avidemux 2.5.4 (one library updated and the other offending library removed so it runs in 10.7)

When I try to use Subtitler and add a .srt I get the message "Cannot identify subtitle format"

I have tried a number of different subtitles, srts, subs etc and to no avail. They open and can be read in jubler etc no problem.

.ttf fonts are no problem.

The addition of VOBSUB is no problem. They burn successfully. Only subtitler with srts and subs fails.

What am I missing?
