Bolide DVR: Do I need to buy any DVR Software?

I just bought this Bolide DVR for my home system.

Do DVR's come with software already loaded on them or do I have to buy a separate software? Also, do all DVR's automatically take other brands of cameras? Any info is a appreciated. I am a Do It Yourselfer!
