Adobe HTTP Dynamic Streaming

The release of the Adobe Flash Player 10.1 and Adobe AIR 2 runtimes introduces support for HTTP Dynamic Streaming for on-demand and live video streaming online. This new delivery method enables on-demand and live adaptive bitrate video streaming of standards-based MP4 media over regular HTTP connections. This capability gives content creators, developers, and publishers more choice in high-quality media delivery while maintaining the reach of the Adobe Flash Platform.

While the Real Time Message Protocol (RTMP) remains the protocol of choice for lowest latency, fastest start, dynamic buffering, and stream encryption, HTTP Dynamic Streaming enables leveraging of existing caching infrastructures (for example, content delivery networks, ISPs, office caching, home networking), and provides tools for integrating content preparation into existing encoding workflows. In addition, robust and flexible content protection is available with Adobe Flash Access 2 software.

Both on-demand and live delivery are supported with HTTP Dynamic Streaming. The content preparation workflow for each is slightly different. On-demand content is prepared through a simple post-encoding step that produces MP4 fragment files along with a manifest file.

You can download VOD File Packager from Adobe web-site. Live stream delivery requires real-time fragmenting and packaging server that will package and protect a live RTMP stream from virtually any live encoder supporting RTMP today, including the free Adobe Flash Media Live Encoder.

Features of Adobe HTTP Dynamic Streaming

Features of Adobe HTTP Dynamic Streaming

Robust, scalable delivery
Use existing caching infrastructures and standard server hardware to deliver on-demand and live content on a large scale.

An upgrade from progressive delivery
Enjoy enhanced playback features including live support, trick modes, DVR functionality, and full access seeking over HTTP connections with HTTP Dynamic Streaming.

Supporting Flash Access Server for protected streaming
Protect your valuable content with file encryption, while still allowing seamless access for the viewer. Maintain control of your content throughout the production workflow.

Multiple video codecs
Encode your content using any Adobe Flash Player compatible codec (VP6/MP3, H.264/AAC), and with a simple processing step, create fragmented files for HTTP Dynamic Streaming delivery.

Unparalleled reach
Reach the widest possible audience by delivering content to Flash Player or Adobe AIR applications, allowing users to stream premium content to Mac OS, Windows, or Linux desktops.

Open source file specifications
Achieve a live streaming experience using the MP4 fragment format, the industry standard for adaptive bitrate delivery, including open file format specifications for both the media format and the manifest format.

Open and customizable media player framework
Quickly and easily add support for HTTP Dynamic Streaming to existing media players by using the Open Source Media Framework (OSMF). You can also leverage a sample video player to make it even easier to use HTTP Dynamic Streaming.

Adaptive bitrate
Detect the client's bandwidth and computer resources and serve them content fragments encoded at the most appropriate bitrate.

HD quality
Deliver high definition video up to 1080p, with bitrates from 700kbps up to and beyond 6Mbps using either H.264 or VP6 video codecs, or AAC and MP3 audio codecs.

Support for standard HTTP caching systems
Leverage existing standard server hardware and caching infrastructures to maximize capacity and reach.

Live or on-demand streaming support
Deliver both live and on-demand content over standard HTTP connections. Live delivery uses existing FMS streaming workflows that support the Real Time Messaging Protocol, while video on demand requires only a simple processing step to prepare and protect files for HTTP Dynamic Streaming delivery.

DVR functionality
Add interactivity to live streams by enabling DVR functionality, allowing viewers to pause, rewind, and skip forward to real time.

Client tracking and reporting (with OSMF Omniture plug-in)
Confidently collect usage data and track playback interaction — enabling content monetization and optimization — with the Omniture plug-in available in OSMF.

Multicamera angles/Picture in Picture
Augment the playback experience with enhanced features that add interactivity and increase viewer engagement.

Re: Features of Adobe HTTP Dynamic Streaming

F4F File Format Specification

As a standard for dynamic media on the web, Adobe Flash supports a number of media formats. These include two core open container formats for delivering synchronized audio and video streams: F4V and FLV. F4V builds on the open standard ISO/IEC 4496-12:2008 (MPEG-4 Part 12) ISO base media file format and supports H.264/AAC–based content. It has a flexible structure and defines specific supported codecs and extensions, facilitating simplified interoperability across tools, services, and clients. FLV supports codecs such as Sorensen Spark and On2 VP6, and encodes synchronized audio and video streams in the same way as they are encoded in SWF files.

Adobe Flash Video File Format Specification (Version 10.1)
The open F4V/FLV specification documents file format information for storing media content used to deliver streaming audio and video for playback in Adobe Flash Player and Adobe AIR. These video file formats are open, allowing other products and technologies to implement these specifications.

F4F is another name for F4V.
