Wireless home audio streaming to Windows PC, Mac, iOS(Apple iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch)

The airplay system is quite good but very apple centric, I have a 3rd party app Airfoil, installed on my pc, this basically captures all audio and sends it out over wifi to any connected airplay devices, i have an apple tv plugged into my A/V amp, so audio can be picked up on this, as well as an app called AirView on my iPhone that allows it to become an airplay receiver(rather than the usual set up where the phone only acts a airplay sender.)

My understanding is that Airplay is essentially a bastardised version of the DNLA standard, so hopefully there is a solution that would work with other hardware that mimics this functionality.

Thanks for that - I have found the Airfoil for Windows v3.0.2 release on Rogue Amoeba's website. That gives me a bit of an idea, but I wish there was a bit more documentation.

Are you using an all-Apple system (except for your audio-visual amplifier)? And, what hardware connects that A/V amp to the network?

Re: Wireless home audio streaming to Windows PC, Mac, iOS(Apple iPhone, iPad, iPod To

I have a windows pc running airfoil, and iphone running Airview, and an apple tv running XBMC. My A/V amp doesn't directly connect to the network, but it is hooked up to the AppleTV box via HDMI. AppleTV recieves AirPlay Audio/Video either from PC or iPhone and then sends it onto A/V amp. I am pretty sure AirPlay is multicast, in that it could simultaneously send it's signal to multiple AirPlay devices (indeed i think there is a market in speakers that have airplay built in for just this reason.)

You could probably get all this done using streaming from VLC, which i notice you are exploring in the original thread, but i have yet to find a codec that works quicker than AirPlay, but YMMV.
