GOOGLE MUSIC, or short: GOOM, is going to be launched very soon. this thread reviews its highlights on the PC (not Android) and discusses whether it makes sense to capture their streams or not. Goom will be quite similar to other new modern music services like Thumbplay Music, Sony's Music Unlimited, Rhapsody, etc. -- you can pay-per-download music tracks and there will be streaming options. Months ago some details were reported/rumoured and those rumours have been confirmed more recently. Since this is the SRF, the number #1 source of information related to discussing and analyzing internet streams (audio/video/XXX /.. ), all you need to know about Goom streams will be published here. SRF is also a place for software coders (freeware/shareware/payware) to get feedback from users using their software products and i am sure that, after reading this SRF-thread, some daring, audacious coders (who dont have "their origin" in the Google, Inc. territories, which is The United States Of Blessed America) will eventually provide updated solutions to i**ega**y capture goom streams. I would expect rtmpdump and Terry Backer's GetFLV in the forefront with some recording solutions by Applian Technologies to do the trick... but at the same time i would also expect goom to be superfluous on the market since listening to online music thru your PC or mobile gadget is an old concept and has never been proven to be a success story among anybody: neither to the content provider nor to the end consumer. The only reason why people would want goom (and prefer it to competitors such as Qriocity, Thumbplay or Rhapsody) is because it is NEW and it is by the famous GOOGLE and all of a sudden the most famous official ITUNES competitor/rival. People who dont like APPLE or ITUNES will be proud to sign up (subscribe) to GOOGLE'S MUSIC (goom). I will be glad to test it and try to capture their streams. I must admit that Qriocity (Sony's Music Unlimited) was very disappointing (48 kbps streams) as was Thumbplay Music (96kbps). And Myspace (96kbps). Deezer does much better (128kbps) and Rhapsody is the uncrowned king of streaming music (128/160kbps). eMusic is maybe the very best (224kbps, LAME v3.98 encoder) but then again Emusic is not a streaming service but a monthly subscription for paid tracks downloads. Thus emusic is clearly out of competition. Streaming sound quality. Kiddos might enjoy capturing (downloading/storing) music files in 96kbps quality .. but, in fact, the 96-specification is meant primarily for mobile phones (Android, Nokia, Iphone, etc.). If you are a PC user (or mobile MP3-player user), then you should not waste your time with Thumbplay or Qriocity. And with Goom? We'll see. Stay tuned. More news to come. Re: Google Music ( GOOM | music.google.com ) reviewAmazon has its cloud-based services (storage and player), WMG (Warner Music Group) is being sold, physical CD sales has never been less than these days, so no suprise that GOOM has more trouble to get to life than expected.
Keep yourself informed about the battle between the giants (Amazon vs. google vs. itunes/major labels). GOOM is coming .. but when: http://www.waynerosso.com/2011/04/11...record-labels/ |

Re: Google Music ( GOOM | music.google.com ) reviewin the beta stage (Music Beta) there is no music provided by Google (and its partners). but the 2 services (paid downloads, paid subscriptions) will follow shortly after. maybe by winter 2011.
but you're right. since there is no music on that website they should not call it Music Beta but something else, e.g. Sucks Beta or something. Last edited by placebo : 08-03-2011 at 12:54 PM. |

Re: Google Music ( GOOM | music.google.com ) reviewNext step, rather than uploading the songs, google music should just hash or audio fingerprint your files, match these against its preexisting database and away you go. Not sure the record companies would like it, but just goes to show that copyright stifles innovation.

Re: Google Music ( GOOM | music.google.com ) reviewthe preexisting database (of hashes or fingerprints) will avoid duplicate file uploads. it's easy to identify identical server files (with the hashes method) and file hosters such as MU (Megaupload.com) already make use of it, e.g. for files with the same name. with song contents it's a different story because a CD-ripped track has much tolerance in duration (±3 secs.), bitrate, encoder, format, tags, and other specs -- and can still represent the same song from the same album. Amazon Cloud Drive / Amazon Cloud Player is interested in licensing this suggested kind of technology (from whomever comes up with such an intelligent software) and Google as well. In any case the cautious user is advised to upload exclusively songs which he/she owns, for example in form of personal/manual rips from purchased physical CDs.
So far, Music Beta and Amazon Cloud Drive are nothing but modern storage space, not very different from zshare.net or myspace (and others: megaupload, rapidshare, ..). According to insider infos, news and rumors in near future all three companies will offer streaming music subscriptions: + Google (thru Goom / Google Music. not Music Beta.) + Apple iTunes (thru Lala.com and or iCloud.com) + Amazon (thru Amazon Cloud Music) And i will be one of the first to show you how to download their music streams in original server file quality (crc32) without paying |

Re: Google Music ( GOOM | music.google.com ) reviewHi Anonymous
Although google and Amazon do have the money, it was Apple only (a strong believer in the financial success of the boring icloud) to be willing to pay US$150.000.000,00 to the major labels consortium. When the money is right, decisions are made right and quickly. While your idea is brilliant in a technical sense, for all non iOS users (iCloud's power is only enjoyable or reasonable on iOS powered gadgets like iPod Touch, iPhone and iPad. and MAC.) it is none of a big deal not to have a modern service such as icloud. Anyway, this is the GOOM thread and we still have to see what the final version of GOOM will be. MUSIC BETA so far sucks (a person i know has a test account and reported to me) or is really not very interesting, relevant nor exciting .. to say the least. For sure it's not worth paying for it. ICLOUD on the other hand *is* free.. unless you subscribe to the additional (but not required) ITUNES MATCH service option, your idea. ICloud as a whole is exciting, no doubt, but the music part of it (both "itunes in the cloud" and "itunes match") is rather disappointing. Rhapsody still rocks abov'em all!! (enter coupon code SRF4RHDY when you subscribe to Rhapsody and you get a 50% off discount ) |
