Remove DRM from audio&video by recording from Windows Media Player and iTunes

Tunebite Platinum is a shareware DRM removal software for Windows, that allows you to legally remove DRM protection from music, audio books and video clips by recording them while they are being played with Windows Media Player or Apple iTunes.

Tunebite supports the following audio/video files formats: .WMA, .M4P, .AAC, .M4B, .WMV, .M4V,...

Further I will relate to Automate unDRM as an alternative for Tunebite, although you may use drmdbg and drm2wmv without it. Or you may use DecryptIt instead. It won't matter for the purpose of this discussion.

Tunebite Platinum vs. Automate unDRM
  1. Both require valid licenses to remove DRM protection.
  2. Automate unDRM supports only .wma, .asf, .wmv files, while Tunebite supports much more formats that can be played with Windows Media Player and iTunes.
  3. Automate unDRM is free, while Tunebite is not.
  4. Tunebite is much slower. What takes minutes in Tunebite takes seconds with Automate unDRM.
  5. Tunebite uses lossy conversion, while Automate unDRM retains the exact same quality of the original wma/wmv/asf file. Automate unDRM just removes the DRM header of a Windows Media file.
When re-encoding media file you are likely to get artifacts. Usually it is not a big problem for audio files, but the quality of video files can deteriorate significantly (or you will get bigger files, still having lost some quality).
  6. Automate unDRM is not an easy to set-up software. It may require a fresh installation of Windows XP. Automate unDRM doesn't work after applying some Windows updates and Hotfixes. See the following thread for more Automate unDRM related problems
Remove DRM from WMV, ASF, WMA using Automate unDRM v2.0 (drmdbg, drm2wmv, DecryptIt)
