Problem recording from USB Headset using RecordPad on Ubuntu Linux

Hello. I'm running RecordPad on Ubuntu Linux 10.04 using a Plantronics USB headset as my input device.

While the headset works in the Audio Setup Wizard, it gives me the error of "waiting for voice input" when I try to record. I've gone into the settings and changed the voice activate level as the manual suggests but it changed nothing -- I get the same error. Left (as suggested), right (just in case), and have even increased & reduced the PCM in the mixer in the Audio Setup Wizard. No change.

Please help...
