How to use freeware GetASFStream to download Windows Media streams


GetASFStream is a freeware stream recorder allowing to download Windows Media streams. Its interface is not perfect, but the program is good enough.

GetASFStream supports Windows Media .ASF, .ASX, .WVX, .WAX, .WMV and .WMA audio, video files and text metafiles. GetASFStream allow to download ASF and WMV videos and ASF and WMV audio streams and save them onto your hard drive. GetASFStream supports HTTP, MMS and RTSP protocols used to broadcast Windows Media streams.

GetASFStream supports IPv6 TCP/IP protocol. Also it allows to set a custom user agent:
- Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; SV1);
- Windows-Media-Player/10.00.00.4019;
- NSPlayer/10.0.0.3650;
- Winamp NSV Player/5.12 (ultravox/2.0);
- WinampMPEG/5.21
...

GetASFStream can monitor Windows Clipboard to automatically capture any Window Media URL copied to it.

How to use freeware GetASFStream to download Windows Media streams
  1. Download and instal GetASFStream
  2. Run GetASFStream. The GetASFStream window will open.



  3. On copying any Windows Media stream URL into clipboard, GetASFStream will automatically detect the new URL and open a "URL REGIST" dialog box.

    Alternatively, just click the "URL" button to open the "URL REGIST" dialog box. Click the "ADD" button to download (record, rip, save) the video or audio streamed by the URL.

    Other configuration settings to bypass streaming source that restricts media to a certain user-agent, referrer or cookie are also available.


  4. Once the URL is added to the GetASFStream job list, click the "RED" (Record) button to start downloading. The status bar will show the downloading status. The file will be saved with ASF, WMV or WMA extension in the "C:\Program Files\GetASFStream\root" folder.

    You can hit the "Open Folder" button to open the recordings folder. And you can hit the "Play" button to play back the downloaded file.

    If you have problems downloading a stream, hit the "WMP" button to try to play the streaming URL in your Windows Media Player.
