HDTV to USB: How to capture Dish Network video losslessly (without re-encoding)

R5000-HD digital video recording system (DTV, DBS) is a modification made to your set top box (STB) providing lossless digital capture directly to your PC. The R5000-HD differs from other DVRs in that the recordings are not re-encoded but rather an exact facsimile of the data received by your STB. Other devices which connect externally to your STB's analog outputs convert the signals back into the digital domain and then re-encode (compress) them via an MPEG algorithm. This is a "lossy" process which degrades image quality. When playing back a recording made via the R5000-HD, it will be identical to when you watched it live.

Another important aspect of PC-based systems such as this is the ability to archive unlimited amounts of material (STB DVRs have limited internal storage and require you to eventually delete material - there is no way to "off load" recordings).

Furthermore you have the ability to share the content freely around your home and with other devices.

The modification made to your STB is sophisticated in its simplicity since it is completely passive. In other words it does not affect the operation of your STB in any way. You can go on using it as if the R5000-HD does not exist.
