Insight on doing firmware update on noname security cam recorder (Netviewer D6 vs D8)

I have a 9 channel Security camera recorder. Try as I might I have not been able to put a brand name or model number on it... Picked it up from Ebay a while back... and the vendor is not too much help...
It came with Netviewer D6 software on it which leaves a little to be desired... I notice out on the internet that there is a Netviewer D8 Software available.... which seems to be a lot more Flexable and user friendly.
The unit does have a method of Upgrading Firmware but I am afraid to try doing this because as bad as the firmware is it does work... and I am able to view my security camera's from Homw and while traveling around the world...
Can anyone give me any adives ot insite as to doing firmware updates on these NO Name Video recorders.??
