How to install Mac OS X Snow Leopard onto VirtualBox in Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat
- Install Virtualbox (not Virtualbox OSE)
- Run Virtualbox and hit the "New" button.
- In the "Create New Virtual Machine" window, click "Next".
- Type the name of the virtual machine. If you type
Virtualbox will automatically change the Operating system onto "Mac OS X" and the Version number onto "Mac OS X Server". - Hit the "Next" button and choose the amount of RAM. 1024MB should be enough.
- Hit the "Next" button and create a virtual hard disk for your Mac OS X virtual machine. 20GB should be enough. Dynamic disk will be expanding on real usage, so will be taking less hard drive space. Static disk should give better performance.
- After configuring the Settings hit the "Finish" button.
- Right click on the "OSX", newly created virtual machine and select "Settings..."
- Select the "System" on the left and uncheck "Enable EFI".
- Select the "Storage" on the left. Click onto "Empty" under the "IDE Controller"
- Under the Attributes on the right click onto the CD icon. Select "Choose a virtual CD/DVD disk file..."
Then find and add the Mac OS X .ISO image and select it. Click the "Open" button. - Click the "OK" button.
- Right click on the "OSX" virtual machine and select "Start".
- Hit the F8 key inside the Windows to change the booting options.
- At the boot prompt enter
and hit the Enter button. This will allow you to see what exactly went wrong if something does go wrong. - Installation of Mac OS should start.
- Then you should see the language screen. Choose your language and click the "Next" button.
- Click "Continue".
- In the drop down menu select "Utilities" -> "Disk Utility..."
- Highlight 20GB VBOX HARDDISK. Then click erase on the right and Name it, for example:
When the Cancel erase box pops up, click Erase. - Then click "Disk Utility" on the top left, and then click "Quit Disk Utility".
- Now your back in the installer.
- Select the drive that is now showing up and click "Continue".
- The next window is important! Click "Customize" button on the bottom left.
Check any Updates included on the top.
For Intel Users:- Drop down bootloaders and check the newest chameleon.
- Drop down Kernels and check "Legacy kernel".
For AMD Users:- Drop down "Kernels" and check "Legacy kernel".
- Check the "AMD option" below System support.
- Then click Next done and Install.
- Skip the disc checking.
- Wait for the installer to finish installing…
- When the installer shows that the installation is finished and starts counting down to restart, click onto "Devices" in the drop-down menu of Virtualbox and hit "CD/DVD Devices" and click "Unmount CD/DVD Device" to unmount the installation DVD image.
- The installer won't restart automatically. Click "Machine" and "Reset", then click Reset in the prompt.
- Next should see the Chameleon boot loader. Then Mac OS X should begin to boot.
- After it boots you will see the setup screens for OSX!
- Enjoy!
Note that it seems that Mac OS X can only be virtualized with one core. And your hardware should support virtualization. The sound and network worked just fine for me. The only problem I had was with my keyboard. I had to use a USB one instead of my PS2 keyboard.
