How to install Skype from repository in Ubuntu 10.10, 10.04

Since Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx), Skype is part of the Canonical partner repository. To install Skype add the Canonical Partner Repository and install Skype via the Software-Center first or via the Terminal.
  1. The Software Sources have been hidden in the menu Ubuntu 10.10. You can enable them again by doing the following:
    1. Right click on the Applications/Places/System menu and click Edit Menus.
    2. This will open a window, scroll down to Administration and click.
    3. Put a check mark in the box next to Software Sources and click close.
  2. Go to System > Administration and you should see Software Sources in the menu.
  3. In the Software Sources select the "Third-Party Software". Tick the two checkboxes to add the Canonical Partner Repositories (The partner repositories offer access to proprietary and closed-source software and are not enabled by default).
Select "Close" and "Reload" to save and update the database if you chose to add either or both of them.
  4. Install Skype from the Terminal:
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install skype

Using a repository, you will automatically receive future updates to the software. Please be aware that the repository is not signed, so when you try to install Skype, you will get a warning.

If you don't want to do that, or can't (for example, if you're on amd64), perhaps the easiest way to install is from the Debian (.deb) package available directly from the Skype website. The downside of this is that you won't automatically get future updates, you will have to download the new versions as they become available.
