Problem with 5.1 sound in Ubuntu 10.04 (only stereo works)

Although my sound settings were showing 5.1 sound, I had stereo sound only in my Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx. I tried to change settings in PulseAudio Volume Control to no avail.

It appeared that I needed to launch alsamixer and change Line Jack and Mic Jack to Line Out:
