"Recording could not be properly started"

I've been using Windows 10 and WNC version 8 a lot over last few months. suddenly it would no longer record.
After I click Record, it appears to commence but the little screen is gray. after 5-6 seconds an error message appears:

"Recording could not be properly started. Click OK to close the program now."

I uninstalled WMC and reinstalled. same problem.

Thanks for any guidance.
