Using freeware VLC for recording SopCast streams

SopCast streams can be viewed with freeware VLC player, but for some streams it is mandatory. VLC can also help if a stream buffers but doesn't load correctly.

To use VLC for recording SopCast streams:
  1. Start the SopCast stream and let it buffer.
  2. Start VLC, go to go to "Media" -> "Open Network...", select "HTTP" option, and type in 127.0.0.1:8902 (If port 8902 doesn't work, try 8912).
  3. Press ALT+S (or click on the drop-down list on the bottom of the dialog window and select "Stream").
  4. Check "File" and select a file on your computer to which your video will be saved. Select "Dump raw input" and hit the "Stream" button.
  5. Leave SopCast running (closing SopCast closes the stream).
  6. You may need to mute the sound in SopCast so it doesn't affect the sound in VLC.
