All DVD players can play DVD-Video discs. They have MPEG-2 video and special structure of files. Some older DVD players may not support recordable disc such as DVD-R, DVD+R or rewritable discs like DVD+RW, DVD-RW.

Some newer players also support other formats. At least MPEG-4 is widely supported. However there are lots of restrictions that your player may have for MPEG-4 videos. You should read the manual of your DVD player to learn about them.
