Fed the correct command, FFmpeg can pretty much stream/download from any website. However you rarely see it used because better tools are available. The reason you see it in current use it because it is possibly the only tool for Apple HLS streams (m3u8). So I would stick to that as it can be cumbersome for other streams.

YouTube is a big universe. Some streams are simple HTTP, some streams are Apple HLS, some streams are RTMPE. For a simple HTTP stream you can use my bookmarklet
