It is a tough question.
I rip DVDs with StaxRip, convert MPEG-2 TVrips into MPEG-4 (xvid / x264) videos with VirtualDub,...
I also used
Nero Recode for converting DVDs and MPEG-2 videos to MPEG-4 AVC files. I really liked that it could add DVD chapters to the video. Sometimes it is a must have feature and it was the only thing that stopped me from converting some DVD videos.
If freeware
Jaksta Free Media Converter works fine for you and you are satisfied with its interface, you can use it.
Otherwise you should think about features you really need.
AVS Video Tools that includes
AVS Video Converter is a nice bundle. AVS Video Converter has so many features! Besides the video converter I regularly use AVS Video Remaker to cut off TV commercials.
There are things that I don't like in AVS Video Converter:
- It doesn't support some formats.
- I don't like the way it crops the video (and I don't wanna see black borders in my videos)
- 2-pass encoding requires me to set up each step (at least to change from first pass to the second one)
- I need other products for DVD and audio conversion
I also like
Cucusoft Ultimate Video Converter. It is a chinese product with weird language on the web-site and potential problems with support. But I like it anyway.
I don't like
Xilisoft Video Converter. It is very good on paper. But in reality I wasn't able to convert into many formats while other software did the job perfectly. And this situation doesn't change with newer versions...
