After K-lite etc..still no go.
I hunted on the net and found that a lot of folks were in the same situation as I was.

Specific to my problem: Dell Vostro 1500: I found out that Dell ships this laptop with a Vista-Ready version of the SigmaTel Audio Drivers, even if the customer orders XPHome/Pro OS (as in my case!).

Dell Tech chat provided the new driver SIGMATEL STAC 92XX C-Major HD Audio. I installed it and things seem ok.

This is a hasty, part-reply. I had problems with Audacity working properly before. With the new driver, works fine.

I will test out SoundTaxied files and see how that pans out.
