They are not using any special tricks. their server drops connection every 2-3 minutes, may be intentionally or server misconfiguration. even there web player needs to reconnect. you can verify this behavior with wireshark. you need to restart rtmpdump to reconnect to the stream.
also you probably set the the buffer size for vlc too large. for me all streams starts playing almost instantly.
