I've been trying the simplest of scenarios, without much success.

On the same machine, using (very brief) streaming documentation at the VideoLan website, I did manage to stream a .flv file to another (client) instance using http://localhost:8080/file.flv - but even though I was looping the stream (instance #1), after a short time the client (instance #2) couldn't locate the address.

As for sending across the LAN, I'm puzzled - especially if i want to multicast it. {strike this }

[EDIT]
Found the better How-To, and used both 1 to 1 streaming (IP addresses for two machines were 10.1.1.3 & 10.1.1.5) and also the multicast IP 224.0.0.0 - works as described with my two Windows 7 machines across a 54kbps wireless LAN (Belkin), except that the client VLC consistently crashed after just a couple of minutes, had poor video quality, and no sound. I didn't try audio only, but it's not good enough with VLC.

Similar streaming should be possible through Windows Media Player on Windows 7 machines - but I haven't discovered the docos I need.

I have no idea about the media software for iApple devices that can be a client to streams sent from the Windows machine(s), but I'll tackle that later. Still learning
