Take a look at WD TV Live, for example. It allows to play videos from any PC or drive on your home network. The Ethernet port connects this player to your home network through a wired connection or via popular, supported WiFi adapters (sold separately). It can also play videos from attached USB flash drives and USB hard drives.

But there are other solutions as well. For example, my HDTV is DLNA certified, so it allows to play videos from my PC. Both my HDTV and my PC are connected to a router via ethernet.

My HDTV can also play some video files from an attached USB drive.


As you can see there are many solutions. Using a DVD-player might be one of the cheapest among them, but it is very time consuming.
