You can use free software to get YouTube videos. You may use say
Replay A/V, that can not only capture but also convert .FLV videos.

As for the gadgets, it is very hard to suggest anything 'coz there too many options. You may watch videos on your mobile phone, Sony Playstation Portable (PSP), handheld computer, ultramobile PC (UMPC), players like Microsoft Zune or ubiquitos Apple iPod,... I would prefer smartphone with large screen or UMPC.
