I've been using Opera for ages on Windows, Linux and Windows Mobile. It is not a scam, nor does it force you to buy anything. Just make sure to download it from the official web-site, namely
http://www.opera.com/
Viruses are always one step ahead. Euristic algorythms of antiviruses don't work 100% of the time. No antivirus can stop 100% of viruses. There will always be new ones that antiviruses won't be able to catch.
So make sure to download software from trusted sources. And make sure you understand the consequences before opening attachments even from people you know (because, for example, their accounts can be hacked and you can get a message with malware from someone you trust).
You can also use quality OSes like Linux and Mac OS X. They have better protection from viruses, besides most viruses are written for Windows.
