It seems I'm switching away from my computer when switching monitor from vga to dvi in this case. But nobody said, in later posts, that wouldn't work... so I thought I had something wrong.

The problem is that desktops and laptops usually come with HDMI out only, so you can't use it to get video on your computer. If you can't get any video, obviously you can't
record video from screen.
Capture cards and standalone recorders like
Hauppage HD PVR usually come with software allowing you to record video with audio on your computer.
Most probably HD content from Dishnetwork uses HDCP, so you will need to record video using component cables. You may need an HDMI to YPbPr Component converter.
