Sorry about that. This is indeed for Windows Vista and 7 only.
On Windows XP Realtek ALC 888 should have a stereo mix. But the only thing I recommend it to continue to search for a driver. Besides trying the latest HP driver for the sound card, try a previous one. If it doesn't help, try several ALC 888 drivers from Realtek. Then try ALC 888 from other PC manufacturers.
I know that you have tried some of the drivers already, buy this seems to be the only way to go.
Also try to remove the driver, reboot and then install a new one.
