I think there should be one or two the most popular stream formats and protocols only, but they should be supported by any operating system including Linux, Mac OS and Windows, as well as by any portable and standalone player. It is too costly to stream 3+ or even more variations of the same content.
Returning to the question. It is possible to use an embedded flash player to play Icecast/Shoutcast stream. However there are some problems with
memory leaks and browser crashes when playing Icecast/Shoutcast with a flash player, they can be solved though. These problems caused many content providers to switch to RTMP .flv (audio only) streams.
