Problem removing DRM from mobipocket.com PRC ebooks

Bought an ebook from mobipocket.com. You may or may not be aware that this is a division of Amazon.com. Paying for it was easy. Downloading it was most certainly not. AFTER paying for it, they wanted my Kindle PID, which I'm sure most of you know is hidden. Several hours of Google time and downloading and learning how to use python scripts, I had a PID to give them in order to download the file I had already paid for.

Got it, transferred it over to the Kindle... no good. The .prc file has *&%##@ DRM attached to it. Can't read it on the Kindle.

Communication with mobipocket.com no good, as every attempt yields an answer from Amazon. Their (Amazon's) people aren't even aware of this mobipocket division... took me a week of emails and phonecalls to establish this fact. In the end, the best they can do is offer a refund... which I've yet to see.

I've downloaded just about ALL of the various toolkits and standalone files mentioned in this and other forums... and don't NONE of 'em work. They all error out in one way or another; bad PID; script errors; all kinds of nonsense.

Has anyone, anywhere, had any luck in stripping the DRM garbage off of a .prc file, recently? As stated, I have the most recent Calibre plugins installed and configured with my PID and serial number... which nets me import errors and conversion failures.

I'm running Linux, so no MobiReader software available. (crashes Wine, so forget about that route.) There must be some little standalone, bare-knuckled command-line utility out there that'll do the trick.

Please??

Make sure you use DRM Tools Archive 4.0.

And make sure to configure the K4MobiDeDRM v03.1 plugin properly:
Quote:

Highlight the plugin (K4MobiDeDRM under the "File type plugins" category) and click the "Customize Plugin" button on Calibre's Preferences->Plugins page. Enter your 10 digit PID. If you have more than one PID separate them with a comma (no spaces). If you have a standalone Kindle include the 16 digit serial number (these typically begin "B0...") in this list (again separated from the PIDs or other serial numbers with a comma (no spaces). This configuration is not needed if you only want to decode "Kindle for PC" or "Kindle for Mac" books.

Re: Problem removing DRM from mobipocket.com PRC ebooks

Hi Stream Recorder

And thanks for the quick reply. I am using the 4.0 archive, and have already put my PID, comma (no space), and serial number into the plugin. Calibre will not import without an error (the book *does* import, but will not open, and will not convert.)

I began all this with a standalone, command-line mobidedrm.py file, which claims a bad PID, and worked my way up to the 4.0 archive, making sure that all software dependencies were met and any customization (such as PID and serial) were filled out. Also upgraded to Calibre 8.6 so I could try the "find upgrades" feature for the plugins... no good. All kinds of other stuff, but no plugins of the nature needed for import/conversion.

I'm at a loss as to why this measly little prc file should be so difficult and intractable. Wish I knew more about coding so I could just rip it out by reverse-engineering/brute force!

Sorry, I don't have a solution for your problem. I suggest you to find the developers of the DRM removal software and ask them.

Can you find the same book(s) on Amazon, B&N, Kobo ebooks,...?

Hey, Buddy

I've just found several developer sites, and will be pursuing that avenue.

Haven't been able to find that particular book anywhere else (legally, that is.) May just have to wait until Amazon offers it.

Thanks anyway for taking the time!
